    A few questions have come up: The effect of choke on velocity would be negligible. I didn't shoot slugs because the point had been made by the bird and buck shot and because at present slugs can be hard to find at the local stores.
    Also we have several presentations that feature demonstrations of shotgun patterns with different chokes at different ranges.

      Would you consider comparing the buck shot effectiveness on meat targets from the various length barrels? You showed the 14” barrel produces less velocity, but is it not effective on a meat target? Thanks for all the great vids!!

      Hey man, or "Hey Paul", if that is all right. I was wondering, why is it that you represent the difference between comparisons in feet per second (distance over time).
      When you "crunch" the numbers I sometimes wonder why and if the nominal speed is more important than the relative speed. But then I remember that kinetic energy also increases in the power of two.
      I love your videos and I'm not sure what I am asking but:
      Do you take percentage increase into consideration?
      Do you take kinetic energy into consideration?
      That being said, thanks man,
      V

      Dumb question, does any difference in velocity have to do with the muzzle being closer to the chronograph? If muzzles were all at 4 yds, would there be such a big difference? Thanks for your videos!

      If I'm shooting birds or clay pigeons, I want a long barrel...about 28 or 30 inches. If I'm shooting intruders in my house,
      a 20 or 18 inch barrel will do. I would go so far as to use a shorter barrel, like 14 inches, but it's illegal, and I'm allergic
      to lawyers, judges and prison. If I'm in bear country, I would buy a Remington 870 (used), with a 30 inch barrel and cut off the
      choke to make it approx. 28 inches. The reason why I'd buy a used shotgun is I don't trust modern gun makers. Also, I'm a cheapskate.

      Train how you intend to fight. I learned to shoot hunting with my grandpa and some habits i picked up then have been helpful but I've had to work to get rid of others that were not. Things like immediately racking the slide as soon as you fire are important in a tactical sense but less so when hunting, unless you need to take a second shot. It's been fun trying to become a better, more tactically sound shooter but I wish I'd learned that way to start with.

      I was taught to rack any manually operated weapon directly after firing to prevent spooking wildlife (or whatever) with the additional noise after the shot. Kind of like a one shot kill. @Booge Nautilus He does have a point, though. Jokes have a finite lifespan after which they cease to be funny and just become cringeworthy, lame, or downright pathetic. Ever consider that you, as fans, affect Mr. Harrell's reputation? The fact that people keep bringing up that manchild Giddings rather than letting him fade into well-deserved oblivion could imply that Paul himself is still thinking about that lowlife, and I'm pretty sure that he is not. I'm also sure that he doesn't want to waste the years he has left thinking about that turd anymore either.
      Using every video of Paul's to bring up Giddings makes you no better than that manchild. You're only giving him more undeserved fame, so forget about him and let it rest. There are far funnier things to joke about.

      @Kesssuli Před 4 lety +2

      In finland we can own air rifles/pistols up to 6.35mm caliber without any license but must be 18 years to buy one. No limit how much joules or velocity they have. If some reasons you need bigger then you will need permit to buy or own one. Existing license to real firearm will also give you permission to buy so called hight power air rifle but those must still be registered.
      But that caliber matters only if weapon is made to shoot metallic projectiles. So those shotgun like co2 powered rubber ball guns are still allowed to buy if 18 years old.

    Paul Harrell
    Testing shotgun velocities and barrel length is interesting and not as simple as it might seem. Because all shotgun barrels can have much different inside dimensions and designs unlike rifle or pistol barrels. The general rule is modern shotgun ammunition reaches maximum velocities in about the first 24-inches of barrel or less on average. However, Mossberg makes 12-bore guns with overbore barrels the same diameter as 10-bore guns. Other manufactures use different diameter tubes as well. The idea is to improve shot patterns, improve consistent velocities, reduce recoil, shorten shot strings and reduce deformation of shot. Some use a combination of forcing cone length, bore diameter, choke length and choke constriction regulated for the purpose the shotgun is designed to be used for. That is why some shotguns cost $300 dollars and some cost $3,000 dollars or a great deal more. Generally low cost guns provide less than perfect results. Not to say some do an excellent job and still are very economical too. This often depends on the ammunition you use. Finding it is more difficult to find than finding the best performing pistol or rifle ammunition. High velocity is the least important if it patterns poorly at the range you plan on using it. In most cases high velocity is the major cause of poor pattern results. Small size shot is most affected and that is a major issue with some steel shot loads too. Generally speaking; if you shoot any person intent on doing you harm with .410 bore skeet load or a 12-bore at 7-yards. One might make less mess, but be assured the results will be the same.

    • @dalekidd420
      @dalekidd420 Před 4 lety +2

      Serious answer? ... PROBABLY... but to such a small factor as to be entirely insignificant in any practical sense.
      IF we could reproduce PRECISELY the load density and pellet positioning as well as the EXACT velocity (and I mean within +/- 1 fps) from shot to shot, I imagine that choke constriction WOULD actually cause a variation, but I suspect it would only translate to a maximum of perhaps 10 fps, with the open chokes shooting faster than the closed. This would be due to the shot cup actually being slowed comparatively by the choke.

    • @bubbajones5905
      @bubbajones5905 Před 4 lety

      A tight choke will increase velocity slightly. A choke is essentially a nozzle.

    • @markmeyer6729
      @markmeyer6729 Před 4 lety

      Not a stupid question... Actually a good one... Back in the day, a lot of folks thought a longer barrel "shot harder", but barrel length and choke were selected to purpose. A longer barrel with a tighter choke (i.e. 30" full) for pass shooting ducks/ geese both gave range and weight to help follow through the lead. But a long barrel (even with an open choke) is awkward in upland hunting. Not to mention heavy if you're toting it all day through fields and brush. The old guys were more worried about shot size and patterns. Regarding buckshot, shotguns have unique personalities of their own, but a full choke might gain a few fps but at a cost of more deformed pellets and a more random hit pattern.

    Hey Paul, I May Not Be Your Biggest Fan Or Your Oldest Fan But I'm Definitely Old & Overweight. First, Old Business, My High Tech, Custom Made, 100% Cotton T-Shirt With You On The Front Arrived & You Look Great! Now, I Almost Started Drooling While You Were Shooting Two Different Mosin-Nagants! The Mrs. Came In The Room While You Were Holding One In Each Hand. I Told Her What They Were & She Didn't Know Who Used Them. I Said, "I Think We Should See Other People." The Way You "Pullrack" Those Pumps Is Most Impressive. I Don't Know That I'll Ever Be Able To Do It But At Least I Know How It's Suppose To Be Done. Watching You Is Always A Learning Experience . . .

      Hey BBT Lover, I'm Pretty Much The Same Way. I Gave You A "Like" Because Paul Harrell Is The Only Gun Channel I Subscribe To. I Troll Around To Other Channels & I Do Occasionally "Like" Miculek & Forgotten Weapons But I've Learned So Much More That I Can Use, Here. Ian Knows A-lot But It's Not Knowledge That's Necessarily Helpful Unless Your Collecting &/Or Working On Military Hardware. So, Raj Is Your Favorite Character? Mine Is Amy . . .

      Sage dynamics is a pretty good channel, he torture tests gear to see what's good and what's not, he tests handgun red dots by beating the crap outta them and usually starts with a 5k round test and goes from there, I think he's got 25k rounds on a trijicon rmr while also dropping it from shoulder height multiple times onto concrete and it's still working and zeroed.
