I found my "NUTS" at Yowah!

- Yowah is located in the Paroo shire, outback Queensland. It's population made up from a definitive characteristic of people from all walks of life. Drawn to this outback space with it's parched rocky red soils, jagged outcrops, bluffs to view amazing sunset and sunrise and windswept open plains to hunt and fossick for the distinctive Yowah Nut.
Yowah Nut formed from siliceous ironstone nodules ranging from 5mm to 200mm in size are unique to this area. Found in layers at depths upto 20metres and sometimes hold a precious kernel of opal. They say about one in every one thousand nuts. That's a lot of nuts to crack!
There's a common fossicking area for the public to try their luck noodling for fragments of opal mixed in a bed of ironstone known as matrix opal. These have been noted to be found in shallower depths upto 600mm or so. There are some mining claims here so stay away from those. There's also a large area of previously mined tailings that can be fossicked through for missed nuts you might get lucky here.
Yowah has something for everyone you can camp at the donation camp ground which includes hot showers and flushing toilets or choose to stay at the towns caravan park with its duck races and dinner on a Thursday night or soak in the hot artesian baths while taking in the stars at the bath houses. Ride or walk along the artesian bore walk and see and hear all the bird life attracted to the area. Artesian pools await you for relaxing those tired muscles after a hard days fossicking. Lots of unusual shops await you to explore, mostly run by small miners and entrepreneur's all set up in very quirky and unique boutiques dotted amongst the houses and streets all these making a day of exploring the town a lot of fun.
On Saturdays there is the local opal market where you might find a bargain if you haven't been lucky in the fields. There's a local golf course if your up for the challenge, however I can guarantee your ball will always end up in the rough! Royal Flying Doctors is supported well here with dinners offered on Wednesdays and Saturday evenings proceedings to the RFDS. In the town the Blue Wren café has a licenced premises with scrumptious pumpkin scones and creamy iced coffees to quench your thirst as you visit all the shops in town.

We loved Yowah. The sunrise and sunsets up the bluff were sensational. The night sky in the outback are magical.
WE didnt get back up there for a sunset maybe next time. would definitely go back. thanks for watching

We got lucky with that find. Were planning on going back to Yowah again in the future but next time we will stay longer and do some serious fossicking.

great video, looks like an interesting place, did you find the nuts by digging through that trench in the fossicking area?
Yes we found it by digging up around some old tailings untill we got into the virgin ground underneath thats were we found all the nuts.
Found the Nuts in the old tailings common fossicking area. The matrix opal about 600mm down in Virgin ground near some trees.
can i ask where is that old hut?
Not sure which one you refer to. All filmed in Yowah itself. One old mine is about 10 minutes out of town. Thanks for watching if your going to Yowah I hope you enjoy it as much as we did
