How to Check the Power to your Dryer - Not Heating or Not Running

- This video shows you how to test the voltage going to your dryer.
If you have a dryer that is not running at all or is just not heating, improper voltage could be the issue. The dryer needs to get 240 volts AC in order to heat properly. The motor uses 120 volts AC.

I never thought it would be the plug because the dryer was running. You saved me from buying a new dryer. I have watched many videos to figure out why dryer would not heat. I replaced all of the heat sensors and the old ones all tested good. The heater coil was burnt up so that needed replaced but still would not heat after replacing with a new one. I tested the cord and the outlet as you have shown. It turns out the cord was not completely inserted into the outlet. Thanks for making my day a little better.
Thanks Bill, you just saved me from buying a new dryer, and I'm the hero of the day to the family. YOU are my hero. Easy fix, the belt jumped off that idler pulley and activated broken belt switch.
This video is EXCELLENT! I was a school teacher, now retired. I had a cord that gave me 120 and 120 but not 240. I now have the confidence to check the outlet, then fuse if needed. Top quality teacher!!

Thank you! We just had an appliance delivery and was told the outlet was bad, and we needed to bring in an electrician. I got the multimeter out, tested great, plugged in the dryer, and realized they probably just thought the display came on automatically. They just needed to turn on the power. I learned something new today!

Hey Bill - just used your video today to work through a power problem with my Samsung dryer. I had already replaced thermostats, thermistor. Heating element replaced last year. But, I had no power to the machine to start up. Used my analog meter and followed your instructions for my 3 prong plug. 120 (for the hot side touching the grounded) 240 (two hot sides together). I wasn't getting to that 240. First I changed the power cord itself. Still had the problem. Cut the circuit breaker and pulled the outlet from the wall. There it was a singed, melted connection from who knows when. It had gone form intermittent to not working. I replaced the outlet. Rechecked the connections as per your video and I'm up and running again. Saved me from buying a new Control Panel for upwards of $150 as a shot in the dark last ditch effort to get the dryer running again. Thanks for the thorough explanation.

Thank you! Found the issue behind my plug. Homewarrenty started changing parts, I decided to fix it myself after three weeks of back and forth with them. Got myself a multimeter fixed it in ten minutes. 👌

I've been working on my dryer for 3 months! You just solved the problem with this video. I was watching crap for hours. Thank you! I had 40 volts on one side of my outlet.

Thank you so much for the walk thru, my dryer stopped heating up & I was all ready to spend hundreds on a new dryer, but after watching all your videos, I bought a multimeter and started my troubleshooting with the power supply. I was only getting a reading on one side, followed it back to my breaker box, and it turned out to be a bad fuse. My dryer works as good as ever!!

Went through the process just to find 1/2 the breaker was tripped.
Did you figure out what caused it to trip? Did it occur anymore?
Sorry to see you dont make new video's anymore! This video saved me $$ by allowing me to diagnose that the wall receptacle somehow had a wire disconnected when my old dryer died!
New samsung dryer wasn't heating, it was only tumbling.

Thanks Bill ... I learned a lot in how to check the whole line of power down to the breaker box and found out it was the four-prong outlet line connections were loose ... took a simple screw driver it was back up and running ... again thanks for you thoroughness!

You have been such a great help to me. Thank you so much. The 2 hot and neutral on the dryer with the multi meter test 120, but the 2 hots test zero and should be 240V. Going to test the breaker tomorrow. I never thought a breaker could go bad!. I'll let you know my results. Thanks again.

Thank you for this and your other videos. I was able to trace my issue to a lose wire in the circuit breaker which was installed 7 years ago. I didn't know that could be a thing.
you have to check for power from outlet to drier,,i had a vogues power reading the first time i checked i had from right to center 120 v from left to center 120 v from right to left 220 v so i was puzzled,, all of my thermal fuses had continuity,, i gave up that day,, next day i came across this video, and checked again the current from my outlet to my drier this time i was just getting 120 volts all across, so i new this time that i had a faulty breaker,,checked it and all it was coming out from it was 120v, replaced it and bingo my drier came alive, folks take your time and do what i did and you will revive you're drier,, thanks!! Wanted to write to say thanks so much for this video, it's still helping people even to this day! I was way too scared to use a multimeter to test until I saw this. I was able to determine the problem I had - it was weird since the dryer would work for a bit then it would stop/turn off. Then I would have to reset the breaker and it would work again for a little bit. I was getting the voltage from the socket and at the breaker, but noticed that the signal was intermittent at one of the hot wires on the socket, turned out one wire was not screwed in properly so it seems it had loosened up over time and wasn't solidly connecting. After screwing that wire back in it's working again with no issues!
Praising god for you brother! Just moved my family into a new home yesterday and the breaker went out overnight. Saved us all a lot of headache and wallet ache.

This video saved my ass! Brand new dryer wasn’t heating, so I ran through my basics from my one-time apprenticeship (so I had what I needed) and was super ready to blame Home Depot and GE, but turned out the previous owners didn’t have the red wired into the double breaker. Thanks!

Great videos. These have been a huge help for me. Tomorrow I'm going to check the voltage on my dryer. Everything checks out but it still won't heat. Hoping these voltage tests will get me to the root of the problem.

Your last saying was a bad motor on the dryer🤦♂️. I thought breaker was bad I replaced it yes it was old. Plugged dryer in and pop goes the breaker again. I checked heating element with meter all good. Now I’m going to go back and check motor after watching this video 🙏💯
Just wanted to take a sec and say thank u bigg time . I changed out the heating element. Thermostats etc... put it all back together and still no heat . Was ready to make the dryer into a toaster or somthing. Came across your video follwed your steps . And traced all the way to the breaker panel (which was good) went back to outlet plug because cord checked out and came to find out the out let was bad in process of taking it out hot wire just fell off wasnt even screwed down tight , but dryer can dry up a small pond now ! You are awesome- at the 5:44 minute point I realized it was actually the electrical outlet, not the dryer. It appears the ground and neutral are switched, on the actual outlet. The dryer's not even broken. Call into electrician. This video saved me wasted money and time waiting for an appliance person to tell me it was the outlet.

I worked on a dryer that was not working at all, did everything you did except for the breaker part found out the red wire on the outlet wasn't spliced far enough and wasn't making a good connection to the outlet problem solved saved me a step 😎

Thank you this is the 1st video I watched and the only one I needed to watch! I was able to determine my 6 week old LG dryer has a problem. I don't know why it kept not just blowing my breaker but it fried it 3 times! The warranty people and or Home Depot can figure that out. Thanks again!

@BillNewberry Hi Bill, I have an issue with my dryer. I sent my dryer internationally where the voltage is 240v. Hence, I am using a step down transformer to set the dryer up. However, I noticed that there is 110v in both hot wires individually, however when I check the two live wires together instead of 240v it's giving me 0v. Hence the dryer starts up doesn't heat. What can I do?

Bill, thanks for giving my wife an overview of trouble shooting our dryer. She say I can build the world with my business but can't turn a screw at home. By chance would you be an IBEW member? The reason why is the screws on all your wall plates. I started doing this back in the early eighties working on nuclear power plants. All the slots had to be in the vertical position so radioactive material will not settle in the slots. I think it looks good and as such shows me you are a top shelf skilled craftsman. Thank-You Bill, I checked my receptacle and wasn't getting the requisite 240V and so it turned out that there was a bad contact in my fuse panel. I have two 30A glass screw-in fuses and it has the Taylor 15/30 AMP, 120/240 VOLT Twin Plug-in fuse head pull-out. The metal prongs on this Taylor wasn't making proper contact on the left side (so only one of the 30A fuses was getting really hot and making a clicking noise) and so I bent the metal prong inward a tad and now seems to be fine. Hopefully, it will stay like this.
