5 Things to Look for When Reading a Research Paper
This is one of the most important videos on my CZcams channel for PhD students. In this video I will discuss an important topic of how to read a research paper when doing a literature review, also called literature survey. Reading a research paper is a difficult task for new PhD students. There are few reasons for that. One is that the authors assume a lot of background knowledge which new PhD students normally do not have which makes the literature review difficult. Also mathematical equations presented in research papers are normally in a very condensed for and sometimes require the knowledge from many subjects area. This also make literature review a challenge for PhD students. After knowing these 5 things, you should be more productive and efficient in reading and understanding the research papers and the literature review for your PhD studies will become easier.

1) Where this paper sits in the bigger picture of your research?
2) What is the 'real' key contribution of the paper?
3) What are the Key assumptions? Whether they are valid? How to challenge that?
4) Where the author contradicts in the same papers or with other papers?
5) How the experiments where performed?
3 TIPS
1)If you dont understand anything in the paper, never mind. Go on reading
2) Don't follow the references immediately. Read the current paper well.
3) Whatever question comes to your mind write it down and sort the 2 important questions and send a mail to the author

@@digitidea Sir, when we write a Review Paper or do Start any Research we compile data from Previous Research in Excel or Word Table , so that we can use it for writing Literature Review Section of Research Paper & Thesis, how to make that process easy ?
I am not asking about the References , I am asking about the Literature Review Part & arranging it to find Research Gaps.
@@Consentric Just store the references first when you get 5 references..Start writing the Literature review chapter "immediately" because that is NOT going to change!...and you writing will start improving...No need to store anything
