I've got the BG branded version. Very robust and ergonomic grip. Thanks for reminding me of the hidden compartment for tinder! Don't care about the whistle, this is just a gimmick. I would also highly recommend a telescopic blowtube as an accessory - saves a lot of tinder!
G'day Gerhard, yep I have one of the those telescopic tubes, marketed as "pocket bellows" here. A nice compact, light weight tool and for only a few bucks, makes a significant difference. Dont think I've singed my eyebrows once since I've had it, lol. Cheers Duke.
I love that fire starter. Have 4 of them. One more thing to remember is that if you live by the sea, that ferro rod is bound to erode over time. This one at least is a bit protected, It will erode if not used for a few years, but it will take longer to erode with that air tight container.

Both my grandson and I have the BG edition and they work great. My preference is a six (6) inch rod and 90 degree knife spine, but Gerber is very good, reasonably priced and light weight. I certainly would buy again and keep as an extra in my backpack. Thanks Aaron for another good gear review. I don't care about the whistle.
I've got a Bear Grylls fire starter and it's striker is as sharp as a butter knife.
i have used the bear grylls version and to this day is the only good tool from that gerber line, its my favorite striker
Really need to test the Uberleben Fire steel, best one I have used.

Now, it seems to me that the ferro rod is a bit on the short side and another issue I have with this product, as well as many like it, is that it requires the use of two hands. There is a striker out there that only requires the use of one hand and that is the game changer.
I carry a 6in baylite, but for a I have to get a fire started now I have a blastmatch.

I modified by replacing with about 30" of 550 thru both holes and wear it as a necklace when I'm in the woods. Keeps it together and keeps end on. CBPJ in storage .
I just have my Ebay/Amazon "Blue Light Special" combos in my kits...which is just a 6" Bayite tethered to a small striker with some reflective 550. I combine that combo with an old pill bottle filled with Vaseline-dipped cotton balls. I guess I never thought about the freezing hands/purchase thing before, although it is definitely prudent. In that case, something like this would surely be useful. As far as the whistle, it wouldn't be deal killer for me. (*I have about 20 TOPS whistles that used to come with the purchase of a knife)
Not bad but I prefer a 1/2" x 6" Baylite that has a hole in it. Long enough to wrap rounds and rounds of duct tape and long enough to give you plenty of striking distance in cold weather when you lose finger dexterity. These things throw plenty of large sparks. There's no protective case like the Gerber but I keep it in a pouch. Buts it's a good option though.

I use big firesteels either on the spine of my Honey Badger or Predator hunter by worktuff.
I have several of the "Light My Fire" fire steel in my EDC and Backpacking kits. Over the years I have found them difficult to use due to the small size. Switched to a 6" ferro rod with much better results.
I have two of these they work great.
Had one of those years ago it was stolen a piece of gear thatworked great everytime on time .
I've had 2 of the BG branded ones for years, works great and never let me down. I have them as backups in my bushcraft kit and my hiking kit to supplement my big 6 inch ferro rods.
Arguably the best piece of gear out of that entire line .

100% works for me and my son is able to use it. Love it.
Have one and it works great. I keep it lashed to my Camp/Woods knife for backup. I carry my Tops knives whistle in the knife sheath.
I literally always have mine on me. I love it.

Not a fan of the rods. I use lighters, in the wind, elevation, etc. Having some cotton is a good idea.
The BG Fire starter was the best thing in the line of crap that Gerber pooped out back then & I usually buy one if I walk into a random shop and they still have them! I'm going to see if our Murdoch's has this one.
For that price I would rather purchase a 6" Uberlein ferro rod.
If it were closer to $10 I would think about trying it.
G'day Aaron, yeah not bad mate. Like the compartment and handles. I do feel the rod is a bit on the small side, but it does the business and that's the main thing. I carry a whistle separately anyway, but if your gonna include one, make it a good one I reckon.
I've found that individual lanyards for the rod and striker, clipped together, enables quick and easy separation for use, rather than fumbling around with a short common cord. Then can be either clipped to a belt loop or "larks headed" around your belt for security. With just the right length, will hang down into a groin pocket, thus negating annoying flopping around and avoids any snags too.
Btw; as much as I like the ol' cotton wool and vas, I intend to get another 6 x 1/2 inch rod blank and install a chunky fatwood handle that can be scraped for emergency tinder.

Looks like a good ferro rod with tinder storage. I would buy it if the price was reasonable.I don’t care about the whistle, it seems like most of those small plastic whistles add ons aren’t good anyway. I have bought a bunch of aluminum Noopel whistles and plastic SOL whistles, that work well and are cheap to buy. Thanks for the channel.
The UST spark lite comes with a spot for a wet fire cube plus I have the Bear Grylls fire starter and it works great

Of course, I scratched off the BG letters, and it is in Mumma Bear’s bag. But it’s not a bad piece of kit.

Whistle isn’t a deal breaker. I have lots of whistles and carry one in my pack anyways. Besides, If The Berber whistle is that poorly made, I’d probably take it off anyways.

The whistle is not a big deal breaker for me but if I did buy it and I didn’t know so the whistle did fall out and I needed that then maybe but there’s plenty of other tools and gadgets that usually have a whistle
u should test our a folding saw from samurai saws and put it against silky f180 or pocketboy and bahco laplander

I've this fire starter and love it. I took the whistle off, you don't need a whistle to start a 🔥🔥. I don't know tho I should have left it on seen how the Chicago politician want us to get whistles 😀😀😀😀. But it has worked awesome for me
I'm don't know much about fire starters but in an effort to make things multi use, why didn't they make the striker a small knife blade with a 90 degree spine on the back?
AKA love the gobspark even without its scrapper it shoots insane sparks compared to others fire steels but will run out quicker but I prefer a firesteel that works fantastic when u need it rather than a fire steel that will work ok but not fantastic especially when u need a fire quick and and want that huge amount of sparks to get that fire going as fast as possible.
UST strike force from Walmart. Please review and let us know if it's any good
I have a few of them and they have proved to be outstanding, but they are not waterproof. I wrap them with jute twine for making a birds nest, and then wrap it all with a length of thin inner tube to help with water resistance.
The UST Spark Force is a smaller version and it’s not bad either.
The only Gerber stuff I'm happy to use are their Multitools, Mp400, 600, Freehand, Dime etc. As rule of thumb whenever anyone mentions Bear Grylls I try not to buy the tool...as unlike him we won't have the option of retiring to a fancy hotel room post filming Man vs Wild 🙃
My experiences with gerber/bear grylls stuff is that its too cheap and gimmicky to really depend on, its more geared towards kids and beginners as stocking stuffer things, yeah some of the things you can make work, but thats because they are so simple and basic you would have to work to make them fail, i prefer the big 5-6 ferro rods and those you can strike a spark on just about any metal, even the back of a folding saw or even the saw/file on a multi-tool, too many better options for the money that are the same or less cost wise without the gimmicky aspect, also those Storm rand all weather safety whistles are really good and cheap enough to buy several

If you absolutely need a whistle, you can always learn to whistle with your fingers. :)
4:33 will cause you to have a heart attack if you happen to be listening while driving in traffic.

Never used the Gerber but to me the rod looks a little short. The small compartment, take it or leave it. I keep my fire starting gear in a small utility pouch with an adequate number of cotton balls and Vaseline. I do like the large handle. Time would tell if the rod stays put in the handle. On the whistle, no big deal but I'd rather see them put there effort and cost into the intended purpose. $18 on Amazon, OK I guess.
Ferro rod, not a fire steel. A fire steel is what you use to throw sparks off a rock.
The Bear Grylls Version is a good fire starter but I like the Esee ferro rod more .
Use the Exotac Firerod Xl before this hehe

Where is it made? Looks like more of a friction fit where cotton ball is stored, just like the whistle, only a matter of time before it fails. Looks cheap. And lastly, why not use a Bic? For that matter, carrying two Bic lighters weighs less, takes up less room and ensures hundreds of fires. Cotton balls with Vaseline are easily stored.
Its just a ferro rod ffs. Dont like the small striker place rod against base of whatever your tinder is on and strike with your hunting blade
The whistle isn't a big deal, but it does make me concerned for durability, because of how the whistle section was assembled.
Still have a B.G./Gerber firesteel.
Used it and it works good but it did not last long in my hands cause I'm a spark 0 maniac 😆

Me? MEH! The firerod's too small! Having said that I've yet to have, over 40+ years, a Gerber ANYTHING fail me, so there is that!
Now then, that outta the way and while on the subject, a good review candidate might be ESEE's take on this type of item. 2 things going for it are the substantial, hollow handle w/screw-top, and the genuine "misch-metal" construction for the fire-rod itself. Requiring a hefty scrape with a sharp knife, these things throw not just sparks, but molten gobs that'll ignite practically any tinder! A s an aside, you might wish to round up a few more of these type items. I'm sure i'm not alone wishing for a head-to-head shootout, fire being so very critical to the difference between an uncomfortable night or nights in the bush, and dead! Thanks!
Gerber really shit the bed collaborating with Bear Grylls. They should have changed the branding from BG to HG for hot garbage. Every BG product I’ve bought has failed catastrophically with little use. Knife blade snapped week 1, fire starter broke in half after a month, and the machete blade broke off on the third swing and cut my shin open. Later found out two of the three items I purchased were recalled due to junk metal. There are better options at a fraction of the price, his products are a joke, just like him. 👍

I typically avoid Gerber for anything. They’ve went downhill over the past couple years. I will say the LMF2 is still a good knife though
pos whistle. Go to Amazon and get stainless steel one with lanyard. Cost is same as plastic one. All the cheap whistles added to something else just cheapens the product you just bought.
Sorry but for the price I have a 6×1/2 bayite ferro rod that works very well at less cost than than the Gerber and I use the spine of one of my knives for a striker. Works very good.
I'm going to stay away from it. Looks like it's about $18, but I can get a larger easy to hold easy to use Uco ferro rod that comes with a great large strike for $8. The whistle on it is a "nice extra," but if it easily falls off it's not really worth anything. You can get TOPS whistles for about $2.40 each that can go in or on just about anything and work very well so that small easily loseable thing on the Gerber doesn't hold any particular value to me.
Those flints are useless when they get wet. Better of with a lighter it will work 100% every time, has anyone in their life time had a bic lighter fail. Don't think so.

I already have like 30 proven fire starting options that have proven themselves multiple times and I just can’t buy more stuff I don’t need but I love to see what’s new but it would take a magical fire starter to make me buy something to put into one of my 3 crates of gear not including knives sharpening systems and extra food water guns crossbow high powered .22 caliber pellet gun that shoots 60 rounds without having to pump it up again and also has magazines that carry 10 shots a piece and is stronger than any pump actions on the market flashlights etc and just don’t have room for anything new especially from Gerber which has always been disappointing.
I think one of the criteria is fine, the ferro rod must throw good sparks. I'd rather pick my own fire starters and strikers. So for me, these little ferro rod kits are nothing I would spend my money on. I've bought 5" 1/2" ferro rods for under $5 CAD. The speedy sharp is the best striker I've found and got that for $7 CAD and an aluminium waterproof capsule that holds like 10 cotton balls (or whatever other tinder you like I got for like $4, or a plastic capsule with a whistle, mirror and a compass (that works ok) I got for $1.50. And I have exactly what I want instead of what I'm stuck with, with one of these kits.
I believe in the KISS method for product design (and a few other areas of my life!). If I want a fire starter there is no need to put a whistle on it. Its disappointing when things break. Is it a product failure? Not if the main function of throwing sparks still works. I just wish manufacturers would know when to stop adding features to things. Seems like a reasonable idea but poorly executed. Its not for me but I enjoyed the content of the video!
