- Barkey reviews "Balto" (1995), an animated feature from Amblimation. This movie purports to tell the story of a true event, and although it kind of fails at that, it succeeds in pretty much every other way.
Kevin Bacon, Bob Hoskins,Jim Cummings, and Bridget Fonda star, while stalwarts like Miriam Margolyes and Donald Sinden lend support. Listen quick, and you'll hear Garrick Hagon as a telegraph operator. You know him as Biggs from the original "Star Wars" (1977).
Barkey tells you about the picture, and then he takes you to end of trail with the true story of the Great Serum Run of 1925.

My children loved this movie! Thanks for the memories and all the backstory
How dog-appropriate! I used to be an ESL teacher and the story that inspired the movie was one of the reading activities I taught pretty often (so I really appreciate the extra background info you provided). Thanks, as always, Barkey!
(and in spite of being a long-time Genesis fan, I had no idea Phil Collins was a voice actor too!)
This movie was wonderful ❤ one of my favorites.
Loved this movie thank you Barkey!!
Two of my nephews watched this VHS so much that the tape wore out!
And let's never forget that the historical Balto was actually the dog to finish the serum run, and the real hero was the other dog, Togo, who traveled much farther than Balto ever did. As you noted, Balto just happened to be the one who arrived and caught the media at the right moment. The history of the serum run is a fascinating footnote to history, but I have little interest in a Disney-styled simplified fantasy pretending to be history (coughcoughPocahontascoughcough). I'm glad that you called attention to the real story here. It's always good to keep in mind what the fantasy leaves out.
Admittedly, Balto the film has a great voice cast, and it's a great looking film, but I found it even harder to watch when I realized how little this had to do with the actual events. In recent years, I've really hated alleged biopics because of the way they constantly take liberties with the actual facts. Yeah, making it cinematic is one thing. Telling utter lies throughout is another.
Like Ed Wood. Great movie, with a lot of fun scenes. But a biopic, it is NOT - but you can make an argument it was never intended to be. It's a fairy tale of Hollywood with a very intriguing protagonist. But it takes liberties with Wood's life and just happens to end just before his life falls into the gutter. Convenient, huh?
So, Balto was like a doggie version of Paul Revere while Togo was like a canine William Dawes.
@@stillaboveground2470 Pretty much, yep.
It's kind of true.
An evil dog trying to stop Balto, a goose friend and a she dog encouraging Balto on? Sound like a film strong on reality! Anyway most real life heroics involve more then one person.
Tragically, even if Balto had been a smashing success at the box office, it still wouldn't have been enough to save Amblimation.
Sad, but true. :(
This was a good movie from a better time in animation history (2D animation). The sequels not so much but are worth watching. Spoiler Balto 3 has a goose with big breast, it's hilarious!
Reviewing Balto, huh? You might get some extra views on this one...
Let's hope they're the right ones!
Willem Dafoe seems to be in everything. He's like Michael Caine or Gene Hackman.
