Balto is a marvel, but Leonhard Seppala and his dog Togo took the serum over the most dangerous part of the trail (the shortcut over the ice that was mentioned). They shouldn't be forgotten either :)
Yeah, it's sad to know that there were other leading dogs covered other parts of the journey who didn't get so acknowledged. But I guess it's the blizzard that got him the statue, since at that point, the man couldn't see through the snow and it all relayed on the leading dog.
You're absolutely right, I remember reading that exact thing years ago. Yes, Togo (There was another dog named Fritz as well) and his team did take the serum over the most dangerous part of the run, but everyone only saw Balto and his team after the antitoxin was handed off at the last checkpoint. That doesn't diminish Balto and his team's effort, but I think credit should be given to everyone who's earned it.
Interesting to think that probably the most difficult challenge Balto ever faced wasn't perilous danger in the Alaskan wilderness, but living in climates he wasn't used to, doing work he wasn't bred for, surrounded by people he didn't know or trust while being paraded around like a show dog. He lived and breathed the frigid Alaskan air, and was clearly at his best when given the opportunity to put his skills to work in the sled dog teams.
Getting the diptheria serum to Nome, was NE VER about competition, or, 2 competing huskies. UNTIL, Humans made it that way. Togo was chosen to play his role, Balto was chosen to play his part. BOTH dogs deserve credit, WHERE credit is due. IF it was not for ToGo and Balto, well, WHO really knows how events could have, would have, might have went? Give credit, WHERE credit IS due. ToGo. Balto.
All credit is due to all dogs. But balto was one of two leads. The other Fox. And Togo did 240 miles of that 600 himself. 19 other mushers did about 19 miles on average for the rest. Barely 10% of Togo. Ironically, Togo, Balto, Fox and their entire teams were both owned and trained by the same musher. Seppala, who ran the longest route with Togo as his lead. The part that they really don't tell you is the nature of the storm. Negative 40 degrees. 60 mph winds and snow. Mushers couldn't see, frostbite set in even among the 19 miles. Mushers hands were frozen to their sleds and they were blind.
If Togo had gotten the same attention Balto had, he'd have suffered the same fate: Carted around like a cheap attraction, abused, and finally stuffed. No respect at all.

babyjenks1784 yes but that would bring tears to my eyes to know how a dog team saved life's and how a movie made us feel happy and sad and to see a real hero
I've always been fascinated by the true story, and I've always loved the film. I wouldn't change anything about it. I think it does a good job of capturing both that fear, sadness, and also suspense that the families of the children had been feeling at that time. The film did stay true to many aspects of the true story, just in different ways that were made more dramatic for the film. Balto actually was sort of an outcast, not viewed as being valuable or experienced. He really was an underdog who proved himself against the odds. It's so inspirational. It's just a shame that the timing of the film's release caused it to be overshadowed and underrated (Toy Story).
For all that Balto and the other dogs did in saving those children in Nome, he and the other dogs should have been left there to continue to do the work they were bred for. They were working dogs who had a purpose and deserved to continue that work instead of being sent to climates ill suited for their breeds, exploited for profit and sent to spend their lives confined in a cage at the zoo.
They should of at the least been someone's loved companion but Balto and some of the others had a poor quality of life after having been sold. Its not Baltos owners fault really they probably offered him allot of money for him and he didnt know that his dog would be abused like he was.
@Samurai Momo Agree. The perfect way to honor these amazing sled dogs would be to allow them to continue their work, instead of exploiting and forcing them to live a life they were not meant for. The best way to pay our respect to their heroic deeds is by letting their remains live in peace and return to Mother Earth.
I partially agree with this, but in fact these dogs would eventually have to retire in alaska, and many of retired dogs at the time were either abandoned or put down since they could not work anymore. If Balto could not have a family or be someone's companion at his retirement as it'd be the best fit, then spending the rest of his life in the zoo ends up being one of the best alternatives for him when we look back at how dogs were treated back then.
Maybe you could take him up with the guy that bred him. He also bred and owned Togo, and considered Balto an inferior animal. He was so vexed when Balto got all the attention that he sold him to the museum, even though Gunner Kassan loved the dog.

Thank you so much for posting this documentary, it was very well done and it shows both sides of the story very well. Just to let ya all know.. the Iditarod IS NOT a recap run of the serum run. It is a run created by Joe Redington SR that was born out of a conscious to not let the sledding dogs of Alaska die, after sno machines came into view. He many others got together and recreated the gold rush trail and runs. Many associate the iditarod with the serum run but that is not the case!
A few things wrong. Leonhard Seppala turned the serum over to Charlie Olson who went through the worst of the storm. Olson turned the serum over to Gunnar Kaasen. When Kaasen took the serum the storm was mostly over and it was an easy trip into Nome where he arrived at 5:30 am. It was dark and the town was under strict quarantine and no one saw Kaasen arrive. The film and photos of Balto leading the team up to Dr. Welch's office were all staged the next day. It's a disgrace what happened to Balto and his teammates. Togo had a very good ending, thanks to Leonhard Seppala and Peg Ricker. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race IS NOT done to commemorate the serum run. That is done to revive dog mushing.
I'm not at all surprised that we have Balto, Togo, the whole team, as well as the other dog teams save the children, and then children give all their money to save Balto. That's what is special about children; they want to help animals; the adults want fame from these dogs. Balto didn't get the cozy life togo got , even sherpa said balto wasn't upto mark, so balto proved himself . I think balto righteously deserved the credit he got
Balto was the last animated film to be produced by Amblimation. The studio closed in 1997 after only eight years of operation and its office building became a self-storage facility called Access Self-Storage. All 250 of Amblimation's crew members went on to join DreamWorks Animation, which was later acquired in 2016 by Universal's parent company NBCUniversal for $3.8 billion. Balto was a major financial disappointment (it was overshadowed by the success of Pixar's Toy Story),
Ya need to look up Togo. That team of dogs did nearly 300 miles of traveling for the serum. That was 6x more then any of the teams running that day. It started with this team.
wow, this was great. I love the 'story behind the story'. Who is the female narrator does anyone know? I teared up when watching the movie. The scene: at the end when the little girl said "Grandma Rose" It was only then did I realize that the movie was based on a true story and yes, I had tears. Every time!
Balto was fastest thats why kassan buyed him, Tago was not even fastest in his team, he was leader cause he had experience, was old and was much more smarter in that time
Am i the only one who thinks that Balto the movie is really unfair? 🤔 Just to think of it, why is that Togo and Seppala was never mentioned in the movie. Still cheers to all the dogs bravery and loyalty to humans.💚
It makes me mad that they took this dog born and raised in cold conditions adapting and mutating if you will to have a full thick and warm coat of fur and take him to a warm hot and humid place to most likely be abused and as they said chained up to a wall. Then taken to a zoo with cages and non cold climates and that's why I think he did not live longer. R.I.P Balto if only I were around to hear about your amazing journey
Knowing Balto was neutered puts into question the whole Jenna subplot. Now if it had been Togo as the main character they might not have needed to include those insufferable polar bears.
If I was to say what movies defined my childhood, here they are: Balto, American Tail, Rock-a-doodle Anastasia Who else actually remembers the days of hand drawn animation?
After watching the new Togo movie, I feel like Universal should do a live action reboot and remake the sequels with several changes to make them succeed the first movie.
If one of the 20 teams failed the serum run there will be no fight who's the real hero between Balto and Togo. All of sled team on the serum were all heroes everyone deserve a credit.
Book The Cruelest Miles tells the story of the Serum run. As a musher enthusiast and Siberian owner the real dog hero was Togo and his team who traveled twice as many miles than the other teams. Although all the teams deserve a great honor and I believe the mushers who did transport the serum received honors. The time that it took the mushers to do the run has never been broken

Bevoid Wolf Tributes and Edits how they treated him

WHY WAS BALTO STUFFED BALTO DESERVES A PROPER BARRIAL I MEAN SHOW THE DOG SOME RESPECT
Balto was a major financial disappointment (it was overshadowed by the success of Pixar's Toy Story),
And how about Togo? He’s a forgotten hero.
now hes a hero after the movie he got way more recogonition and people understood the real story
Lucky him, he got a normal life.
18:50 you have to be kidding me right there...
Lovely Balto an amazing hero and mans best friend :)
Good boy balto R.I.P
I named my Siberian husky balto
A loving memory worth keeping
Anyone else want to see the production of the actual film, as opposed to just a documentary of what loosely inspired the film?
Do you know where I could see the production of the actual film?
Is this spam? Because this is exactly what I asked.
Alec Foisy No, this is no spam. I love the movie Balto as well and would love to see, if there is a documentary, the production of the actual film.
Anyone wanna start a petition to have Balto's remains buried or cremated?
Lunasent Yes! Very much so!
👍👍👍
Yes
Let Balto go back to Alaska where he belongs.
Exactly and bury him there
And his statue better stay
Sad that Togo didn't get credit in this docummentary.
Every time!
The actress' name is Miriam Margolyes, a famous character actress - she's been in lots of things but character actors are less known.
Thank you Balto for your courageous work!! Love ya forever!
Very inspiring indeed. :')
They should of let Balto rest in peace, but they stuff him instead.
@
Katherine❤ They still should to this day. Let him live in peace.
Atleast he is honored for his hard work
Togo might have had speed but Balto had intuition. Gunnar Kaasen found that to be a outstanding quality of Balto
Balto was fastest thats why kassan buyed him, Tago was not even fastest in his team, he was leader cause he had experience, was old and was much more smarter in that time
Who is here after watching Togo movie?in the movie it seems Balto became a famous dog by accident
I love Balto💟💟💟💟
Balto is best👍👍👍
I LOVED IT
Love this movie. Just wish they had done more interviews with the cast (Kevin Bacon, Bridget Fonda) etc.
Balto save us from the corona virus
I think balto is looking down at us and dogs and thinking I did a great thing
AJDIMOND and us
AJDIMOND and those who loved Balto and Togo
Balto we will be lost without you
I love u balto
i love you balto you are amazing 😉🐕😂🌹💙
Why wasn't this a special feature on the dvd?!?!
Knowing Balto was neutered puts into question the whole Jenna subplot. Now if it had been Togo as the main character they might not have needed to include those insufferable polar bears.
If I was to say what movies defined my childhood, here they are:
Balto,
American Tail,
Rock-a-doodle
Anastasia
Who else actually remembers the days of hand drawn animation?
i do im actually shocked that some1 else remembers rock-a-doodle other then me xD
GodInuyasha Gaming
HAHAHA XD
dat honden zulke dingen doen vind ik zeer ontroerend. ik vind het een geweldige tekenfilm, ik heb hem in huis. husky''s zijn geweldige honden!
I will always love u balto
After watching the new Togo movie, I feel like Universal should do a live action reboot and remake the sequels with several changes to make them succeed the first movie.
If one of the 20 teams failed the serum run there will be no fight who's the real hero between Balto and Togo. All of sled team on the serum were all heroes everyone deserve a credit.
Am I the only one who just breaks down and balls like a baby when I hear this story? Planes, boats, trains, nothing. But dogs. Dogs.
important document
Book The Cruelest Miles tells the story of the Serum run. As a musher enthusiast and Siberian owner the real dog hero was Togo and his team who traveled twice as many miles than the other teams. Although all the teams deserve a great honor and I believe the mushers who did transport the serum received honors. The time that it took the mushers to do the run has never been broken
I can't believed this guy did this to balto
I find his last years sad as a pup! How Why do people use animals for their own financial gain... Balto,Togo, i doesnt matter... Treat your pups well.
Is this the documentary found in the non-USA DVD disc?
I think that I'm a human version of balto
Balto is a ture hero
Jezne Saville don't forget Togo!
I love him alot
Yep
Togo is the real hero
Togo traveled 262 miles while Balto was 20+ miles. Just imagine the struggle of Togo and Seppala just to deliver the medicine to the children.
Seppala and togo is great
Love the movie and love the true story!
