11 years later and still the coolest project discovered on CZcams👍 and the fact that his wife was supportive of him throughout the trials and errors of this build was even more heartwarming. Whatever he’s doing now, no doubt his cardboard artwork is praised by artist worldwide👍
Absolutely wonderful! Moreover I admire Izhars' passion and dedication especially when his wife said "if you not going to try it then your going to drive the whole family crazy". Its definitely in your blood Izhar :)
I once worked at a corrugated mfg company as a package designer and thought about all the cool things that I could design from cardboard. I thought about a hang glider, which would have been cool but never got to make it reality. A bike never crossed my mind and I have to say that I am impressed! Good job!
If you can read this, you sir are a genius. I've made many costumes with cardboard and dream of making a boat, but this shows just how versatile the stuff really is in the right hands. Hats off to you, incredible :)
Amazing, the possibilities your cardboard bike can bring for underprivileged countries is endless. I hope you've already been approached by the right people to get the wheels turning! Simply awesome!
This is great!!!! My husband was an electronic and mechanical design engineer who designed neat items. We need more people like this. My husband has a patent we hope to get made. So, quit making negative comments.
The potential applications of the processes he created to make this bike work (strength, water resistance, etc.) are going to change the world. Brilliant!
Very creative. And at $20, this puts bicycles into the hands of most every child. A great use of recycled materials. We need minds like this in other industries.
Engineers told him it wasn't possible. What school(s) are putting out engineers that think like that. That to me is a problem. This guy is living ingenuity !
There was a link in the description. go to "projects" and you'll find more info on the product, how much they intend to sell it etc. If you email the company I'm sure they can talk to you about it.
Usually I find "concept" bikes ridiculous and pointless, but this is something special. Very clever, inexpensive, beautiful use of recycled material and inspired idea. Kudos!
It is people like this guy that the world needs! I actually never thought about the impact that a bike's material makes on the environment and this is is just genius. Seriously amazing. I'd buy one.
There are so many possibilities. Tandem bikes, wheel chairs, kid's scooters, walkers for elderly, baby joggers, sports equipment for physically disabled people!!!! I am sure this genius can do anything with cardboard.
Prototypes are rarely 'cheap' and often take time to build. For example, a functioning Honda Civic prototype costs in the millions, but a production Civic, almost identical is a tiny fraction of that cost due to economies of scale.
everything is about systems. I'm a web designer. When I started, I was slow as hell. But, over time, I developed systems, got better tools, refined my "process". This is the r&d phase of anything. I guarantee, this guy could probably pop out a bike, lickity split, now, where at first he didn't even believe it was possible before and didn't even know how to approach it. But, now he has a system down and can make it faster / cheaper.
It can hold against water very well. I read about it more, they said he did a test where he place the bike underwater for several months and it was still strong to ride afterward.
A sheet of heavy corrugated cardboard can support maybe a few pounds on the broad side. On the narrow side (edge), it can support three hundred pounds. Watch the video again. Notice what he says and does at 2:30, how he stands on the side of the bike at 2:45, and shows a car's weight being supported by cardboard at 2:50.
We get that kind of cardboard plates together with some photo-polimere sheets as protective material... and I can say they are really strong. This honeycomb structure give it such strenght you wouldn't expect from cardboard... combine it with fiberglass or carbon composite... you could make an airplane out of it.
jitterbuba Why couldn't you use the same principals of applications and say build prefabricated walls and such and create a kit to build a tiny house ? It would just be on a larger scale . I'd think you would have to use a few laminated beams to use as the main supports in the structure though. It would create a really cheaper way for people to build their own housing !
"It's made out of Cardboard". Nuf said. Do it yourself could be a little tricky, but this guy deserves business JUST for thinking it up, and assisting him by purchasing the product can help other creators in knowing that CREATING "IS" worth the effort.
There are literally millions of people,in countries where buying a regular bike just isnt an option, who might now be able to travel faster and further than they could without it. Thats pretty damn wonderful!
When it comes to product description they are synonyms, so fire proof/resistance are the same thing. Also you can look up the definition to fire proof and it says: fire·proof [fahyuhr-proof] adjective resistant to destruction by fire.
You are a freaking GENIUS! I hope you become incredibly wealthy with this idea, these are the kind of ideas we need for the future. Where can I get one???
Excellent! There is nothing new under the Sun, however. I saw a magazine article about ten years ago about a man who built bikes out of cardboard. His idea was to have a bike that was cheap & disposable, and would not be a big deal if someone stole it. Those bikes weren't nearly so nice looking as this one, though. Also, there is a book from 1970's called: 'Nomadic Furniture' that tells how to make furniture from cardboard.
"In testing the durability of the treated cardboard, Gafni said he immersed a cross-section in a water tank for several months and it retained all its hardened characteristics. Once ready for production, the bicycle will include no metal parts, even the brake mechanism and the wheel and pedal bearings will be made of recycled substances, although Gafni said he could not yet reveal those details due to pending patent issues."
Id love to see stress testing. Wouldent want the front post snapping off after a few months going down a hill. But im very interested! And yes everyone. Its fire and water treated. Hes smarter than almost all of us.
Steel bike production has massively more processes involved. Do you understand how butted bike frame tubing is made? Do you understand that building a frame from tubes requires them to each have been made to that specific size (as they are butted), then cut at precise angles, jigged, welded, then cold set to fix welding deformations? So how does this match up to taking a sheet from a CNC laser cutter, putting it through an epoxy roller, then stacking it onto the prior one?
It's so cool! I saw it at the museum of science and industry. When you see it at first you're like what the heck but then you read that it's made out of cardboard it's just amazing!
resistant to fire means it will resist for limited time or up to specific temperature, but after a while it will be damaged by fire. fireproof means it can not be damaged or destructed by fire. The term "fire" is under a question. Probably meaning typical fire temperatures.
This is true, if you are shipping one. These will probably be shipped in bulk at a discounted shipping rate and be distributed from a central location (as central a location as exists in a third world village).
The fact that it's made of cardboard.. that ONE man and not a WHOLE line of factory workers.. or even worse, MACHINES.. is making this bicycle from scratch!.. From the design process to the production of it! The fact that it is a labour of love and not your average store bought, mass produced piece of tin crap! the fact that it is ecological.. cheap.. recycable... light... are just a FEW things i find so cool and fantastic about this bike! It's original.. and not another "sheep"!
1. Innovation often happens in steps. Frank Gehry made cardboard furniture before building the Guggenheim Bilboa and Disney Hall. This is the 1st cardboard bike- who knows what's next? 2. A cardboard bike can provide a better life. In parts of Africa, bicycle owners double or triple their daily wages because of access to work and education. A conventional bicycle is often too expensive for most people in those villages . 3. It could help reduce the MASSIVE amounts of trash we produce.
the human imagination is something of awe...cannot imagine what else this guy can come up with if he puts his mind to it.perhaps a cardboard RC plane or drone prototype...?
We need to print this cardboard bike for every child in the world. Fab Labs need to talk with this guy so they can make a revolution: One bike per child!
You could probably get it customized, either by the factory or yourself. Paint it any color, any style, probably even types of bicycle cut to your liking. Maybe down the line there could be newer models with gears and different styles such as mountain bikes. Maybe even one with an electric motor. The possibilities are endless. And for $20. I want one.
That is one THICK piece of cardboard. DANG! He did a really excellent going through the process of making this. I bet it's waterproof and such. It's hard for me to believe if he did the entire bike that he didn't do something like waterproofing it.
11 years later and still the coolest project discovered on CZcams👍 and the fact that his wife was supportive of him throughout the trials and errors of this build was even more heartwarming. Whatever he’s doing now, no doubt his cardboard artwork is praised by artist worldwide👍

Gives the word "recycling" new meaning.
Ha...Ha...Ha...!!!

This is one of the best ideas I have seen in a very long time.
I love it I hope that he is able to market it around the world.
The potential applications of the processes he created to make this bike work (strength, water resistance, etc.) are going to change the world. Brilliant!
Very creative. And at $20, this puts bicycles into the hands of most every child. A great use of recycled materials. We need minds like this in other industries.
You are fantastic, Mr. Gafni
Engineers told him it wasn't possible. What school(s) are putting out engineers that think like that. That to me is a problem.

he should win an award for this, amazing!!!
Inspirational! I love it!
Watching this in 2022 and still thinking it's a great concept. Looking forward to the great days when all this will come true.
Me dio un escalofrio al ver este video, es simplemente perfecto y me enamore de ese señor. Larga vida al inventor!!
Unbelievable things happens when you still young in your mind! Simply Great!
E ainda o pneu não fura!!! Genio demais..........
such a brilliant idea n thanks to his wife...
Ajiep Juddin
Izhar says, " What I like about it the most, it's made out of cardboard". I love it, my favorite video of the day!.
Rim brakes and everything! I'm thoroughly impressed!
Impresive!
Mr. Gafni show us the bass guitar you made, look really cool!
It is people like this guy that the world needs! I actually never thought about the impact that a bike's material makes on the environment and this is is just genius. Seriously amazing. I'd buy one.

Great idea and conception, even greater result!!
Such a creative approach
this is a great idea, a great technological development, hope many people buy your bikes
trully amazing bike, pure light and cheap, but i wanna know that jazz song too...what is the tittle of that song???
That is AWESOME! man, I also love your attitude. Have you won any prize for your genius? If not, you should have !
Game changer Good deed for the world, Good JOB sir we need you in America.

what a great invention! How could anyone dislike this?? Must be Hamas or Iranians.
guy's a genius!! what a creative mind can achieve knows no bounds.
I love it. Ingenuity at its finest.

Bravo Izhar
Wow Honestly for $20 or even $30 to $40, this will sell and be a major game changer. Easy, quick, and cheap short run transportation

a man after my own heart... kindred spirit homie.. keep up the great work... :)
Most of innovation in our universe from tiny Isreal.Greetings from India
You are a freaking GENIUS! I hope you become incredibly wealthy with this idea, these are the kind of ideas we need for the future. Where can I get one???
Yeah, maybe a combination of both might be even better.
Look forward to seeing these in the marketplace.
Great JOB!!! Congrats! :)
Muy buena idea. Incluso hasta su diseño es agradable.
Let's hope this hits Kickstarter soon!
Excellent!

gafni is amazing
Realmente muito boa sua idéia!
I wish you every success!
The exact kind of mentality you have is fuel for the kind of mentality these innovative, dreamers and world changers to their inventions.
it coated with lacquer paint. But he also put some extra stuff into the cardboard to make it waterproof and fireproof. one tough bike.
your work is admirable...
damn that thing is the bomb!!! Come to Puerto Rico and teach us how to build them!!! We love bikes here!!! :)
That's impressive! Nice work
Awesome idea.. But what happens when the cardboard bike gets soaking wet? Would it become soft?
It's so cool! I saw it at the museum of science and industry. When you see it at first you're like what the heck but then you read that it's made out of cardboard it's just amazing!
Wow, this is the thing that is missed in "Science of sleep" movie. Great job, respect to the author.
resistant to fire means it will resist for limited time or up to specific temperature, but after a while it will be damaged by fire.
fireproof means it can not be damaged or destructed by fire.
The term "fire" is under a question. Probably meaning typical fire temperatures.
I want to meet this guy, what a genius, love it!
wow.... well done your one hell of an inventor..
This is true, if you are shipping one. These will probably be shipped in bulk at a discounted shipping rate and be distributed from a central location (as central a location as exists in a third world village).
He's working for poor...he reminds me Santa Claus!people need guys like him..congratulations!
Wow, I would have never thought to do that.
Good job thinking outside the box! Pun intended ;)
Simply amazing, good job Izhar Gafni
bamboo is irregular and has to be made into a bicycle by hand. cardboard is genius. it's light, cheap, and can easily be mass produced
this is absolutely incredible! what's the life span on one of these things?? the brakes and axles must wear down fairly quickly?
so where is it? i knew it was stupid and impossible and said so on day 1
The fact that it's made of cardboard.. that ONE man and not a WHOLE line of factory workers.. or even worse, MACHINES.. is making this bicycle from scratch!.. There I see a GENIUS..Please accept my gratitude.
They should name it "Re-cycle" get it?

Now add shock-absorbers around the front wheel for the rocky terrain and we got a deal
God bless your heart....
I need a bike to Peru ... I like the idea
Amazing!
must be great to ride on a thing you developed yourself
i love this man
what a lovely video!!
This is amazing and innovative.
I'll also purchase it when if I can.
wow, awesome! he is inspirations to many people
It ships as a flat piece of cardboard, that's the beauty of the idea.
cant wait to get my hands on one of these!
We need to print this cardboard bike for every child in the world. Fab Labs need to talk with this guy so they can make a revolution: One bike per child!
Thats great! Good Work!
