Consistently Hawks operated outside and within the system better than anybody: he never signed with any company, played with the medium almost childlike, was really a brother under the skin to Huston, both just smiling away while they went their merry way, yet were so different from each other, Hawks always willing to throw the script away whoosh and improvise while Huston used the script, seldpm changing it, making the actors change their intonations. I dunno honestly which was greater.

I’ve read that Hawks wanted Cary Grant to play Cherry. Grant, who, as the video notes, had worked with Hawks before, didn’t think he’d be right in a western and turned the part down. Interesting to think about how the dynamics of “Red River” would have changed if Grant had accepted.

Cary knew best. He was best in a glamour role because he was debonair.

@doctornoooo Huston also wrote all of his own scripts and Hawks didn't, so that's probably why Huston was so attached to his scripts and Hawks liked to improvise and such.
