  • If you're playing in the NHL and looking to score more goals, you're in the right place. In this video, we compare NHL mechanics to superstar NHL mechanics, focusing on the specific differences that can turn a breakaway into a goal or result in a save. By examining similar situations between right-handed and left-handed players, Connor McDavid and Connor Brown, we highlight what sets McDavid apart.
While both players reach a corkscrew stance when attacking the goalie, McDavid's use of deceleration mechanics is key. Unlike Brown, who plants his feet and offers no deception, McDavid slows himself down, creating two potential options for movement. By internally rotating his toes and using edge dragging while keeping the puck centered, he remains unpredictable, forcing the goalie to respect threats from both directions. This nuanced control and lateral mobility, coupled with quick angle changes and timing in his pullback and release, illustrate McDavid's advanced mechanics compared to the more static approach from Brown.
Furthermore, we see how McDavid and other top players like MacKinnon and Matthews maintain the puck between their feet and make rapid angle changes, making it difficult for goalies to stay square to the puck. This ability to keep the goalie guessing until the last moment highlights the difference in timing and mechanics that sets superstars apart. While Brown’s mechanics are excellent, McDavid's advanced deceleration techniques and quick release timing elevate his play. These skills, though challenging, are learnable through consistent practice and video feedback.

I feel like Brown really had three options here since he was a right shot and was holding the puck in the pocket. He could either do the "Bedard release low glove, fake the shot low glove and backhand upstairs, or fake the shot back hand forehand jam on the ice". I agree that Brown did not use enough deception in slowing down but I feel like the primary reason that he doesn't score is that he never changes the angle on the shot (like you mentioned) and also the fact that he shoots it right at the goalie's chest.

Yes but those options aren’t easy things to pull off and are in convenient on a breakaway. McDavid’s options are convenient and more easy to pull off on a breakaway or at any time.

May I ask what benefits are there when using the NHL grip code

Does a lot but increased range and smoother, faster stickhandling with more wrist roll. Check out how to stickhandle like Patrick Kane inside Precise Puck Control course for more info.
