You will be Shocked by the absence of cars, scooters, motorcycles, buses, and bicycles. Nothing parked on the side of the road, no beeps, exhaust nor engine noises. You walk or you boat. period. It's wonderfully unique

One of the most useful thing my friend, who speaks fluent Italian, taught me on my first trip to Italy was to buy coffee or juice at any cafe and then ask if I can use the toilet. I think it's just courtesy to order something because if you multiply how many tourists come and use their toilet for free , things like toilet paper, water usage will add up at their expense. Then there's always McDonalds. I always carry some tissues and wet wipes with me, just in case. Don't forget to greet the person behind the bar with a Buon giorno or Buona sera before ordering. Oh yeah, sometimes you have to pay first at the cashier, get a ticket then show it to the barista and sometimes you can directly order from the barista and pay later. Just follow the locals or ask.
My memorable meal in Venice was Linguine/Spaghetti al nero di sepia or squid ink pasta. Bring your toothbrush though because it turned my teeth black 😀

When I first got into Venice, it took me 2 hours to find my hotel just round the corner from Piazza San Marco, as I decided to just walk around & not use a map. By the end of the trip I knew everywhere & could get from one side to another in 20 minutes! Loved Venice so much

If you go to Venice, 3 things:
    - Don't fall for tourist traps. Ask the menù, see the prices before. It's different from other Italian cities, there are clearly overpriced services well far away from the monuments too.
    - Try to favourite locals and their jobs. Foreigner capital has taken over most of the activities. Usually they will be kinder and cheaper. Use GMaps and Tripadvisor.
    - Venice is wonderful and unique, but it has this overcrowding problem in high season. In these periods, go elsewhere in Italy for more authenticity and a overall better trip.

Getting lost in Venice was the #1 takeaway we had from your videos and our favorite thing, discovering random Piazzas was amazing. Came across one that had an ice skating rink blasting Metallica....

I actually agree. Sorry, I know it's late. But out of all the iconic tourist destinations in Europe, Venice has to be my favourite. I used to worry a lot about the overtourism, but after 2020, I have heard that the city is "re-thinking" their tourist strategy. So hopefully in the future it will not be as bad as it once was. I also worry about the rising sea levels to some extent, but something tells me the EU will call in the Dutch to come help with that lol😂 I LOVE Venice. Such a rich, historic, beautiful and gorgeous city. Hope that the future will be kind on this old place. We can only pray.🙏🏼

Spot on video! I'm from Modena, Northern Italy, wanna know what shocked me about Venice? They were talking about it on the news some years ago and they were saying that especially in Piazza San Marco, if you sat down to have a coffee for example, they would (illegally) charge you a different price depending on where you were from. For instance an Italian would pay €1, a Japanese tourist would be charged €5, an American €3...Outrageous!! They made a big deal on the news, for obvious reasons. I have fond memories of that city, it is truly one of a kind, but SO expensive!

Mark have you ever been in Turin? It’s a wonderful city in Italy not far from Milan. It was the first capital of Italy! It’s a beautiful city because it is a fusion of French and Italian architecture plus it’s not expensive because it’s not so popular yet and the typical food is great, plus it’s a part of the mystic triangle with Prague and London and it’s full of magical symbols! Plus it’s really practical to move bc it’s a Roman city so it has a chess table structure!
ofc I’m a turinese but the city is wonderful and surely deserves a visit! Plus the museums are great

Plan a lot of time there. I was there on a college tour in 1988 and we tried to do everything and go everywhere which left us one day in Venice. We had four hours to get from the big parking lot to the northwest to San Marco, and back. Boats probably would had been faster but as poor college students we hooked it trying to not get lost. I found the number of tourists too overwhelming even in April and if I do go back November looks like a good time to go.

I love Italy and returning again April 2023 and taking in Venice before going to Rome.. Unfortunately I can’t get excited about Venice, dunno why, it’s just never tickled my imagination. Thanks for the video all the same, hoping I love it when I get there

We were there a few months ago. Definitely wasn’t my favourite Italian city. Food was good, but So many other cities were better since everything has to be brought in. Loved the Murano glass and a trip over to Burrano!!

I was in Venice last year with my friend, and yes we were lost, but ended up to eat in a local restaurant and it was really good and cheaper than tourist places.
PS:First in the morning we went to Mestre instead of "Venice", and our English was trouble to ask somebody, but ended up to eat fantastic breakfast. That day was the best day in our Italy trip. HAHAHA

Most businesses speak or understand English... it's the common language used to communicate with the American, English, German, French and groups of tourists from the Far East coming off the cruise ships, by air and by EuroRail. Some of the visitors just take it for granted and not all even invest in an Italian phrase book. There's an American golden arches in the Mestre train station and then another 5 minutes from the Venezia main station. Hard Rock cafe is now directly off San Marco on the opposite end from the Cathedral. Almost all of the major international hotel chains have built there or bought and renovated existing properties. Love the city.

I found a group ticket on TripAdvisor for a 30 min gondola ride for just over 30 euro. I was a solo traveler and shared the boat with 5 others. We had fun and both our gondolier and the other one near us in our group both sang and one had a pretty decent voice. I bought a ticket specifically for sunset time and it was beautiful! And it let me click off a box on a budget...until I return with someone 'special' to splurge for the private boat!

Thank you so much for your videos! Very helpful for me and my family soon to travel in October to Venice and Rome. My one concern that I have not seen mentioned on any vlogger’s page is how safe is it to bring young children, age 3? Should I invest in one of those backpack harness for my son? Also we purchased one of those new 10lb folding strollers that you can put in a back pack. Is this a wise item to bring as well?

Jean Grandas Franco If you compare roughly $100 a ride which can accomodate up to 6 people (4 on average) is $25 per person that is less than what they charge here in Miami to go on a crowded boat to see the millionaire houses so I think gondolad are a bargain

Your info re respectable attire at churches is valid for all the Italian churches everywhere, including Vatican: no shorts or mini skirts, no sleeveless shirts / dresses.
Re Aperol spritz - it's actually an 'aperitivo', you drink it 1-2 hours before the meal and they normally give you some nibbles ('stuzzichini) with it.

Venice was incredible. That being said, the main thing that shocked me was when I had to piss in one of the canals in a dark corner on a Sunday because all the public toll bathrooms had closed and it was an emergency. Yes, I know You can use the restaurants bathrooms if you go in and purchase food or a coffee but I was maxed out and drank to much “Peroni!”

Hey Mark! If you have a limited time, how do you find balance between places you've already seen and places you want to see? I'm planning my 3rd trip to Europe and am adding in places I've visited that I feel like I want to experience more of because I loved them so much (Prague, Amsterdam, Venice, and more) but with limited time and money I don't know how to see these AND new places. I tell myself "I'll be back here one day and I can do more next time" but if I keep going to new places I'll never get to come back! Yet, if I keep seeing the same places I'll never see new places! Should I just try to keep it as 50/50 as possible? What would you do?

I couldn't find anything from your website or here, but you're the pro so I'd love to see what you're experience has been and what to expect (also with children, if they've gone with you, we plan to take ours to some events this year). Thanks! Love this channel!

Good tips for Venice. We've been in Summer and we won't go back. It is great in Fall and Winter.Beautiful city that must be walked to enjoy. You will need 3 days to get a full understanding of this wonderful city. BTW don't ever eat where the rest of the tourist eat.Explore and get off the beaten path.

this video is terrific. We are planning our FIRST EVER trip to Italy and France in September/October this year. Do you think the twenty million tourists will be around then or will it hopefully be a bit less crowded? And is it true that very early in the morning or sunset/later at night are good times to see the main parts of Venice without the crowds? I'm getting excited!!!
