    I’ve heard the History of US is just fantastic. I really need to get the complete set.

      They have them at the library as well! And hoopla has the audio versions 😊

    Will be doing Sonlight for the first time this upcoming year. So excited and love hearing what other mamas think about it. 🙌☺️

      I absolutely love it! Which level will you be using?

    I will be using the 2020 (Hakim) 100 with my daughter this coming year. She has significant ELA learning disabilities but has made great progress this year. She likes to be independent and work on her own so I'm not too worried, lol, but I knew she wouldn't be able to handle that new spine even on audiobook. She is excited to get started on her first year apart from the Youngers. Question- that WWII book- should she read the WWI book ahead of time or will she be okay without it?

      The first time we read the World War 2 book, I wasn't a huge fan, and I think that is because it referred so much to the World War 1 book. I think that it can definitely be read with 100 just fine, but it makes so much more sense to read it after World War 1 which is scheduled in level 300. But, it isn't included in level 100 anymore, so unless you really want to include that book, I would probably wait until level 300 and then add it as an extra resource.
      So, I would probably skip it in level 100, but add it to level 300. I read it with my middle guy this year because he listened in on the World War 1 book with my oldest. And then I read World War 2 to both of them 😊

    I'm so happy to hear your review of Japanese from Zero! I'll be starting to homeschool my son next year (9th grade) and he's also a video game loving boy who wants to learn Japanese and there's not many homeschool options for that! Just curious - did you just do the book and YT videos or did you also get the subscription on the website?

    • @Townsendhouse1
      @Townsendhouse1  Před 3 měsíci +2

      So far we have only used the youtube videos and the workbook. I think at some point we may add the subscription, but I didn't think it was necessary for the first year. He also uses duolingo some, which has been helpful (although he prefers the From Zero program on its own 🤣).

      I’m also so happy to hear this review of JFZ!! My twin girls will be using it for 9th grade this year. May I ask how you assign a grade for it? Do you just assign a grade based on completion? Thank you!

    My son will be doing J this coming year for 8th grade. We are both so excited! I was wondering how the change in spine for 100 would go. Now I’m nervous since we don’t have access to the older version. I have a year to worry about it. 😅

    • @Townsendhouse1
      @Townsendhouse1  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I'm sure people will sell the older version on eBay, or even in Sonlight Facebook groups!
      J is one of my absolute favorite cores!! We did it a few years ago, and it was fascinating with everything else going on in the world. It will be an awesome year!
      As for new vs old 100, I think you could still use the new version and just borrow the joy hakim books from the library if you are comfortable scheduling it out for yourself and having discussion about what your student is reading. I read the spine for history even in high school because I love it so much, so discussion just happened naturally. Enjoy your year!

      @@Townsendhouse1 thank you. That’s a great idea. I’m like you, and definitely plan to continue reading history with my children when they hit high school levels.

    In your opinion, would you suggest the old Core 100 vs the new Core 100? Or, would you suggest the new Core 100, and just switch out the spine history books? We don’t necessarily use Sonlight’s language arts, but do read the books. My daughter isn’t big into studying wars, but I love WW2, in particular, if that makes any difference.

    • @Townsendhouse1
      @Townsendhouse1  Před 3 měsíci

      I personally like the Joy Hakim books from the old core 100 - however, there are also a ton of notes about those books in the old instructor's guide. I am very comfortable with history, and I still do a good bit of history with my kids (I read the spine, they read the novels), so I feel comfortable having discussion on the fly about different points of view, adding in extra context etc.
      The new spine is good, the content is good, but it is dry. I love history, but hundreds of pages of just small text was killing me, and my son (who is not a huge fan of history) was pretty much over that book in the first month of school. I have heard that people think the first couple of Joy Hakim books are too "young" but I don't think so. It might be because my kids were on the younger side when we did level 100.
      Overall, I think they cut several books from the new level 100, which is helpful, it is a huge jump from G/H/J. I wouldn't read the World War 2 Uncle Eric book with this level unless you read World War 1 (scheduled in level 300) first because it gives a lot of context to the World War 2 book. But, this is one of my favorite levels. A lot of great discussion and deep dives on history in general. Hope that helps!

      @@Townsendhouse1 Thank you so very much for such a thoughtful, in depth response. My daughter is on the younger end of the age range, too (turns 14 in late October). Like you, I still read aloud with my daughter, and plan to until she graduates. I may look at at finding the older version on consignment at our homeschool store and then drop the books that the new version drop.

    What does your son use for animation and video editing? My daughter would love that!

    • @Townsendhouse1
      @Townsendhouse1  Před 2 měsíci +1

      He uses Blender (which is free) to create the 3d animation, and then he uses the Adobe Creative Cloud - mainly Premiere Pro for video editing. And I feel like there is one other program he uses, but I can't remember it at the moment and will have to ask him and come back to let you know. We subscribe to the student version which is at a discount here - adobe.prf.hn/click/camref:1101luCbS/creativeref:1100l130407 (affiliate)
      He is hoping to add a music production elective for the coming year as well.
