At the age of 41 I'm about to start my new hobby of leatherworking based on your videos. Thanks for sharing your passion and kindling an interest in learning in your viewers.
Welcome to the club! I started my leatherworking journey thanks to this channel, as well.😊
Hey dude, much luck on it
Tip: If you need some basically free stamps, get your drill bits from your handdrill. You get different sizes of crosses and stars from Phillips and torque bits.
One surpring tool I picked up for leather tooling: a small crochet hook for very tiny details that the beveler stamp can't get to. You use the back of the hook like a stylus and it does a pretty decent job.
I've got a project I want to do tiny designs on and I'm just getting started, that sounds like a great idea and I have lots of crochet hooks. Thanks for the tip!
@@SnowFox102 do keep in mind it is more tedious than the beveler and it takes multiple passes. But I did a whole project with this method and it worked.
@@DirtCheapTerrains Oh yeah I'm sure. It's just that my project is so small that I think an edge beveler would be too big, or at least too big for me.
Something else like this is a walnut pick, it is even thinner but I use the acorn end for those tight places and the pick part for a stylist and a smoother as well. I love those garage sales finds!
About half a year ago I found a great kit online: multiple spools or wax thread, half a dozen needles in various shapes and sizes, assortment of stitching chisels, edge beveler, edge groover, scissors, measuring tape, thimble and two awls. All for just over €50. So I totally agree. Getting started does not have to cost an arm and a leg.
#craft
100% I used the minimum amount of tools for AGES.
i got that exact kit for starting as well
Am just getting started in leather working for LARP, this is absolutely what I need! Thanks as always ❤
Glad you enjoyed!!
While not a LARPer, I do enjoy seeing many of the projects you have done. I really liked the tent/backpack you made (that may have been the first video of yours I watched). I love camping, and several of your projects would be things I would actually take camping.
Keep up the leveling up!
#craft
I've worked for two different companies that fabricated and sold solid surface countertops. While most will have broken or random scraps, they likely won't be sink cutouts but more strips and corner cuts. Solid surface is poured in lots like paint, and can be repaired, but if you repair it with a piece from a different lot, you can oftentimes see the difference in the particulates. So any place worth their salt will leave the sink cutouts with the customer to keep for possible repairs on their new and expensive countertops. That said laminate and stone tops can't really be repaired in the same way so those cutouts are likely fair game if they are kept at all.
I have been a professional fine art woodworker, carpenter, sheet metal fabricator and maille smith. with hobby level skill is many more artistic endeavors including pyrography, resin work, paracord knotting etc. at 55, and as a disabled vet with limited mobility I have been starting to gain a lot of interest in leatherwork lately. #craft .
This is so incredibly helpful. As someone who's just starting out, here are the tools I found I needed, in order:
1.) Knife
2.) Rivet tool
3.) Hammer
4.) Needles
5.) Stitching chisel(two-tine if you can only get one, but you'll definitely also want a four-tine also)
6.) Groover
7.) Hole punches
8.) Beveler
And that's actually as far as I've gotten so far. I've made a medieval ring belt, some pouches and wrist straps. My next project is gonna be a costrel.
You can do a lot of stuff just fastening with rivets before you get into stitching. I would learn the basics of stitching before you move on to tooling, but that's just my preference.
Also, if you get the cheap Harbor Freight hole punches and have trouble getting them to cut, there are some tricks you can use. Add a little beeswax to the cutting edge before punching each hole. If you're really struggling, and the punch is small enough, you can even chuck it into a power drill and use it just like a drill bit. It cuts through almost instantly!
Tandy leather sells a really nice starter kit. Totally worth every penny to me and my kid anyway.
#craft gonna be honest. The kit wouldn't be for me but for a close friend who is very keen on learning leather working. Teaching them the craft but only have so many duplicate tools. Love watching your videos and watching you grow ❤
I'm kind of an "all or nothing" person when getting into something without direct guidance by someone actually teaching me, and have thought about buying leathercrafting tools for a while now. You Sir just saved my wallet, by showing me, what I *actually* need
(also: #craft )
The timing for this video could not have been more perfect. A few days ago, I was looking into taking up leather working. A lot of my tool questions got answered .I can't thank you enough for this
#CRAFT
Been thinking of getting into leather crafting to compliment my father's smithing. But I never really knew where to start. Thanks for putting a list together! #craft
For the edge slicker you can also use an old BIC pen. (Which also can be placed in a drill)
Good call! I have used a wooden dowel b4 too lol
A nice piece of antler works good too, plus the tip can reach into narrow spots.
I'm a blacksmith and I mostly use leather for knife sheathes and straps, especially for LARP and SCA articulated armor. My first real tool was a punch because nails can punch a hole through leather but don't don't remove leather, meaning that leather "heals" itself and rivets don't fit very well.
This was soooo helpful! I bought a 60 year old briefcase at Goodwill a few months ago. I convinced myself that I would convert it into a fully functional modern briefcase. Which, naturally, meant I needed to make a leather 'sleeve' to hold my laptop with pockets for my phone/powerbank/etc, that I'd glue into the old case. So I made a trap for myself by thinking "Oh you're crafty! How hard could leather working be? You helped the cub scouts do it after all!" I feel so lost just looking at the tools. I've got a template already made and a double shoulder of 4/5 Oz leather. The trick is, I can't even start the project. I can't start because I look at the tools section of Tandy or Springfield and feel so out of depth I just freeze 😅. So thanks for narrowing things down, let's #craft this bad boy!
Oooh, sounds cool. Love to hear how it goes.
#CRAFT in the process of sketching up a LARP outfit... been watching you for years... i think it's time i make some leather gear to wear out to events... woot woot... hugs from Dallas....
Hey Cl3ver, one more time I'm gently asking you to turn your attention to making a pair of leather shoes from scratch. My pair that I started like century ago is almost finished (which is my second leather project ever), and I would love to compare it with someone's work who knows leathercraft. Also, I'm sure lots of people would like to make their own pairs, and you are a great tutor!
This is 100% in the plans lol. I have been wanting to for a while but I need to get ahead first as, trying to bust these out in a weekend is trixy at best lol
@@SkillTree Good luck then!
This feels so weird commenting on the sponsor, but here I am. So I think that Fume thing MIGHT be good for when you are cosplaying or larping someone who smoked. Just a thought.
#CRAFT
Loved this, it was very comprehensive. As someone ready to start dabbling for LARP purposes, it was great to get an honest entry-level overview of what’s really needed to start. Thanks for sharing and taking care of your community!
Knife!
Hammer!
GOOD leather punch set!
Strap cutter!
Swivel knife!
Edge Beveler!
Sewing Kit(awl, Needle(s) & linen thread)!
#CRAFT
#3: If you don’t have any harder surface, and are just making stuff using a regular table, try hammering stuff on top of the table leg - this made my work so much faster.
# Craft . I am really glad that you are making it possible for people to learn and do new skills. I definitely like learning. I am 62 years old and on disability living on a minimum amount especially in todays exploding costs.
I'm turning 60 tomorrow and learning about all the fun things that I couldn't do before. #craft is the way to go! :)
If you're on a tight budget, you can hone a swivel knfe without jewlers rouge. You can either strop it with wet leather or, if you need more grit, you can use toothpaste as a sort of lapping compound.
#craft
I love how you make intimidating projects so accessible. They’re good challenges, but not complicated.
I Love all your leather working videos. I am leveling up.
This is such a helpful video, while I love your builds and it tickles the creativity side of my brain I know that when I want to actually start crafting something this is the first thing I’ll go to, followed up by the thing I want to craft! #Craft
#CRAFT I shouldn't but what is one more hobby in the grand scheme of things? The endless possibilities... Fancy book covers, pouches for ink and quill...
ABSOLUTELY! Makes you a more well rounded person!
It builds character, but in a legitimately constructive way!
#craft I recently started bookbinding and I absolutely loved your bookpress video and I built it myself, its pretty much my most used tool right now but I plan on getting into leather covers and a kit like this would absolutely go towards making my dream book designs.
Yep! As soon as you got to surfaces I immediately said nylon cutting board and chunk of marble. Best things for it.
#craft
These kind of videos are absolutely my favourite because while watching you make stuff is a lot of fun, if I'm not interested in doing something very similar, it's more of a "Oh that's cool, maybe I'll do something like this some day", while these basics videos are full of info I can use right now for whatever project I have in mind without having to dive through e.g. every leathercraft video you've ever done in hopes of finding the specific thing I'd like to know(which is fun in and of itself, don't get me wrong, but it's also kinda inefficient), so definitely keep them coming!
I’m so glad you have made this video for new viewers and people who haven’t tried, as much as I loved watched EVERY single one of your videos to learn how to get a basic grasp on how a beginner can make sick armor, this video would’ve came in beyond clutch for me lol. Either way great video!
I am SUCH a huge fan of this channel! I have only found you recently but a perk of being late to the party is I can binge episodes while I #craft my little heart out! Thanks for all you and your team do for this community! ❤
This is so helpful! Looking to make our own wedding favors for our wedding in September and I'm the kind of person that just dives in and gets everything, then gets overwhelmed with everything because i didn't just focus on the essentials 😅😅😅 #craft
I lost my burnisher one time and did many projects using the handle of the edge beveler. The tandy #3 was a real work horse for me.
I was fortunate enough to grab a 250+ piece kit off Amazon when it was on sale for $100 that includes virtually everything you can think of.
Tge only thing i dint have listed in the video is #4, and now I i know to run to the bathroom tile place by my house to check for scrap pieces. 😊
I litterally have been looking for this over the last week because you inspired me this could not be more perfectly timed! Thank you and merry christmas!
Love what you do always find something that I learned from watching this channel
Just a warning about the edge beveler from Weaver, made by horseshoe brand, with the plastic tan handle and interchangeable tips. The sizes are bigger than listed. They take off more of the corner than they should. Chuck dorsett of Weaver leather gave a good tip I liked about the bevel should take off a quarter to a third at most of the width.
Thanks so much for sharing all this useful information and you're videos are fun to watch as well 👏 Keep up the great work; it's appreciated ☀️
Great video. Very helpful.
Thank you for such great content on your videos, I'm just starting on leather crafting and you are a great inspiration to keep on tooling!
You can also use an antler in place of the edge slicker 😊
#craft
Was just looking to learn to punch holes in my belt and armour buckles, ended up watching the entire video and now I feel that crafting stuff might be a possibility for me
Hey there. I am currently unable to make money except for things I make. I actually want to make bracers to sell locally. This #craft kit would be such a godsend. Good luck all this community rocks ❤.
Hello From Colorado USA! I really appreciate all your effort and time you put into teaching us and showing us that everyday people can make extraordinary stuff. Your attention to detail and hard work have given me the motivation to try projects I thought were out of my reach because i was afraid to mess it up. Thanks for everything you do! #craft
Thank you for all your videos!! You make the world a better place. #craft
Love these videos and love this community! All I need is an edge beveler and a swivel knife so I’ll leave the contest to the rest of you!
That's such a big help for me right now. Thanks to your videos I've finally got the motivation to make a belt for that cool Celtic Cross buckle that I had lying around for ages. And now I'm hooked on leather crafting but don't have a big budget.
I bought a leather strap - and some scrap leather to test on first - at a newly opened LARP store and so far only used a rotary punch, my dad's old military knife that has an awl, some upholstery needles and parcel string as cordage. I still have to get the edges smooth though. Gotta try that rug method.
But like the rest of my garb it's an ongoing process and one has to begin somewhere.
My grandma even may have some of those tools lying around in granddad's old workshed. I'm pretty sure a lot of stuff "fell off the truck" when the shoe factory he worked for since he left school moved it's production to far east Asia in the 90s. 😅
Thank you for this video that boiled down the overwhelming variety of tools down to the essentials. #craft
Just started to get into leather crafting. This video covered the bases well. #craft.
Great choices in tools. I approve of your choices. I started about the same time you did in leather work. Great video!!
I love the basics videos you've been posting as of late! #craft
Your commitment to the community is amazing #craft
Great video as always! I'd love to get a glimpse at how you store all your tools! As someone who also dabbles in a lot of different skills, it's hard to keep the tools from the various disciplines organized.
I now have a shopping list as I presently dabble in leather #craft with only neadles thread and an awl. Great video with clear explanations for each tool!
i love these videos so much, highlight of my day when a new one drops #craft
I love learning from and being entertained by all the things you put out. #craft
It's like you read my mind, I've been thinking this week it's time for me to finally take the plunge, and sure enough Skill Tree throws up a video today about this! Can't wait to get started! #craft
At renn faire this summer one of the leather shops was selling bags of scrap leather. I had never worked with leather before but after watching this channel for so long I had to get some. I love making things and trying new materials and techniques is my favorite. #craft
It's awesome you're doing a giveaway, you are the inspiration for my starting leathercraft. Thanks for helping me level up!
Love your content. You have given me the motivation to get started leatherworking instead of just adding random project videos to a queue that I will never act on! Thank you!!! #CRAFT
#Craft. Love what you do and can't wait for what's to come
Excellent starting point! Gotta thank you for starting me down the path of leatherworking. Have progressed to maiing things for my son's school #craft fair and belts for friends and family. Always looking for a new project to inprove my skills!! Thanks!!
This video has the perfect timing for me. I saw all the videos for leather in the channel and want it to try to make some things. I just got 2kg of leather and earlier today I was searching for a video in this channel about leather tools . Some hours later I saw the notification for the new video...just perfect!!! #craft
This channel has helped me advance and level up my skills with various crafts and hobbies. Thank you so much for all the videos and everything you do Kit!! #craft
Ive been wanting to start leatherworking!
# craft... This was fun to watch, I am repairing Herman Silver trim on one of my granddaughters Western Pleasure Show Saddles. I have thought about leather craft, saddle repair and ornamentation, belts as well. I heard you mention using the scribe to make a leather circle and then strips I believe. Definitely has a place in saddle repair, restoration and ornamentation. I'm a recently ( in the last year retired RN). At 75, I am trying to find a way to have fun and remain useful. A hobby were I can sit down, take a break when I need to... Something I haven't been accustomed to. You brought back memories of the last time I messed with leather ( Id have to call it that, I had no skills...LOL. It was when I was a cub scout- boy scout... 1956-1966 roughly. Thank you.
#craft First off, I just want to thank you for this absolute legend of a channel. Been keeping up with your work for a few months now since I started going to Renaissance Faires and I've even taken up sewing and modifying my own garb because of you! I will without a doubt use several of your videos to make my own leather pieces for my mystic traveler character. I'm fortunate to live near a Tandy's so a starter leatherworking kit would push me over the edge to finally make my own belt, boots, and maybe even some sweet bracers!
Thanks for the guide, been wanting to move from sewing into leatherworking and the simple starting tools demystify things quite a bit. #craft.
#craft Been watching for a few years, and you and the team have inspired multiple projects. Appreciate the willingness to jump in, learn, and teach!
I’ve gotten into leatherworking a lot after I found this channel. I’m generally busy as I work in construction and have a young baby now. I prefer working with chrome tan and on occasion veg tan. I’ve made a few leather totes, I made dnd dice tray scrolls I made a set of Christmas stockings and some other projects around tool belts. If I were to make a recommendations if you’re busy or limited on space I prefer using leather scissors over a knife to make cuts. I use an awl to trace out the shapes on my project so I know where I’m making cuts. I also almost always use an 18inch ruler. Good luck to any new crafters! And practice on your scraps don’t just toss them.
Good luck winning that prize y’-all I’m sure it’ll be amazing.
I’d like to add on to this, although we love Tandy leather here especially if you need templates or hardware. If all you’re after is a cheaper leather supply maverick leather has second run leathers that can often be found at a very reasonable price range. The veg tan horse narrows are a great option to get practice in and small crafts.

Thank you so much for this video! I know you made one like it earlier, and I was recently contemplating going back to try to find it. Now I have an updated version :)
I bought a kit around this time last year, but it ended up not having key things like a swivel knife or a bevel stamp. One of the tools that did come with it came broken. I made one project with the kit and put the rest on hold because of the lacking and broken tools. Now that it has been about a year, it felt time to pick it up again and figure out which tools to get to supplement the kit I got last year. This video was incredibly helpful. Thanks!

have been watching your channel for a while now, and you have inspired me and my art in so many ways. I am planning on going into LARP and leathercraft sometime in the future because of your channel! The idea of just making things like bracers, pauldrons, corsets, and a duster jacket out of leather just sets my little gothic nerd heart aflame!
I love this channel and all the things you come up with. I #craft all the time and have many things I plan to do with inspiration from you. been a big fan for a while and plan to become a Patreon member when I can afford to.
Keep up the crafting inspiration. Looking forward to all the adventure to come.
Completely amazed how far you've come, from having few hundred subscribers, to being a full blown channel. Well, greatness is always rewarded. Been a while since I started watching you. I remember the comment I left you under the 2019 recap. Your hair was a lot less gray, maybe not at all😂. Even tho I don't suppose you are still subscribed to me, I am pleased to see you've come so far. Keep up the good work, I am hyped about what could be the next video. Oh, and so that I don't forget. #craft
#CRAFT I've been watching you for a while now and really love your energy and creativity with everything you do. I'd love to get into leather working. Some of my favorite videos so is the one where you "leveled up" your pauldrons, the coffee alchemy kit, and the ranger cloak. All projects I hope to add to may outfit for ren faire. Keep up the amazing work and sharing your craft.
This is exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks for breaking it down and giving me a starting point. Would love to see a video next on the types of leathers, and what the weights mean, and maybe where to purchase. Thanks again! #craft
As we head towards a New Year I’m looking to start learning a new #Craft skill and after watching your videos I’m inspired to start leather working
Keep up the awesome work ❤😊
Leather #craft is great, been working on my skills so I might at some point be able to sell some at medieval / ren faires - so far it's primarily been a set of needles and a box knife ^^ Not to mention a much appreciated metal ruler I got as a thank you for sewing a friend a wallet (he brought me all the materials I needed too, so no cost except a bit of practice labor from my side ^^)
I started getting into leather working from watching your videos. Great stuff! #craft
Thanks! 👍I have just decided to start with leather crafting, so perfect timing.#craft
Wanted to try my hand at leather working/crafting. It looks amazing and it's a skill I haven't leveled up yet. Thank you for putting together a small list of basic tools to get started with, this definitely helps a lot.
#craft
Very recently found your videos, and now I’m totally going to get into the #craft so a set of tools would be really cool! Keep up the great work, man
#CRAFT It's always cool to see your crafts and nice to see you teach and give advice.
Always a good day when you post a new vid.
#craft
#craft I’ve been looking into leather working thanks to you! I recently purchased leather and haven’t yet had the chance to get some tools to start with. Thanks for all of your videos to drive me into an awesome new skill!
I’ve been getting really interested in leather #craft recently and your videos have really been kindling that interest. Hopefully one day with enough practice I’ll be able to make something cool like armor or a dice pouch.
Great vid! I started using edge bevelers, wing dividers and a swivel knife and what a game changer, my projects look more finished and professional. Keep these coming! #CRAFT
#CRAFT
My mom likes to learn a new skill every winter, when garden season is over. This year it's leather crafting and watching her got me interested too. There's a Tandy store near us and I picked up a wallet kit, and my next project is a mystery braid cuff that I'm going to try and do some custom tooling on. I've learned a lot from these videos and they're also really fun to watch!
Always great advice we will see how my next #craft turns out.
I love your videos. Your enthusiasm makes me happy. ❤
Gotta dig out some of my leather stuff and figure out what to do with it. You always make me wanna go fuck about with leather.
Thank you again for another great tutorial episode. For someone as myself these are essential, otherwise I would not know what tools I need #craft
#Craft Oh all the gifts I could make using these! I always thought leather working was expensive because of how often you wanted Tandy to sponsor you!
#craft
Really do appreciate your channel and your squirrel energy. Love your progress on your skills and willingness to share the good and the bad of the creative process.
Just getting back into leather craft again and have recently found you and enjoying watching all your videos and learning a lot that I didn’t learn before. #craft
Been here since almost the beginning and you're still my all time favorite #craft youtuber, keep up the good work, you've come amazingly far!
Thank you for staying with us so long. It’s been a wild ride and we definitely wouldn’t have made it this far without people like you.
This is an awesome list of essential leather working kit. Thanks for sharing your experience-inspired choices! #craft

I took a basic leatherworking class a little while ago but haven't had a chance to buy myself any tools or leather to keep learning yet. I actually found your channel after researching leatherworking after that class and I'm so glad I did. They've been a really great addition to what I learnt as well as a great source of awesome ideas for projects. Thanks for consistently putting out such helpful and creative videos!
Hopefully I can get a little work table set up with some tools soon and start crafting!
