  • It’s a sunny February day in the town of Prince on the old C&O and the Amtrak 50 Cardinal is running nearly 2 hours late due to equipment issues, and freight train interference.
Today’s filming of 50 is a bit more special as my brother is boarding the train to head to Philadelphia, PA.
I wasn’t going to film on this day but decided to last minute as I just had my camera and tripod.
After a nearly two hour wait, we also caught B831, ethanol loads from Illinois to Florida… you can catch that in this video after Amtrak clears.
Here’s more about Prince Station (PRC):
The town of Prince was an ideal place to build a passenger depot. Its location near many coal mining towns made it the perfect spot.
In 1880, the first passenger depot in New River Gorge opened. The depot was very strategic and efficient for both Fayette and Raleigh counties.
Soon other passenger depots opened in Quinnimont and Thurmond.
Passenger service was booming with thousands arriving in the gorge.
In 1891, the C&O enlarged the depot to manage the large volume of passengers and freight. In 1917, the original Prince depot burned down. It was rebuilt the very same year to continue service in the gorge.
As the coal industry began to decline, so did the demand for passenger trains. Prince remained an active station despite the decline.
In 1946, the C&O Railway built a new brick station at Prince for $200,000.
The unique Art Deco style was unlike many other stations featuring large window walls. On June 26, 1946, the grand opening of the new station had 2,000 people in attendance.
A marching band, speeches, and refreshments completed the ceremony.

Great video - Prince seems like it is something that has not changed much since it was originally opened apart from the waiting room chairs & signage - love that older style ' art deco 'buildings. Appreciate the background information as well on this somewhat 'quirky' station - they sure built them to last back then.

It just gets better every time, always taking us somewhere new in the Appalachian Mountains you’ve got to come down to McDowell County and check out norfolks southern. I watched two videos of the cardinal today and yours is the best in my opinion very informative
