Coming back yet again to watch this video I realize that this is my favorite Surfski video and the one I have watched the most since I started paddling a few years ago. Such beautiful and monstrous conditions!
Intense! Thanks for the inspiration this gets me fired up to go out every time. 5:18 I've lost a few too. So I tie mine to my pfd with a small carabiner.
Massive! One of the best downwinds on the internet. Great paddling, wave choice, editing... just right. Interesting that the waves are so big the video seems to be in slow motion, until you see how fast the boat is going, the spray is splashing, and the paddle is vibrating when it's down on a run. Nice to have your latest one be the best!
Amazing 👏. I'm just starting out on a surfski and I can't imagine being on water even half that size! Even boat wake on the river has me wobbling like a Buddha on a Cork 😢
What an awesome, a w e s o m e paddler. With the gimbal head camera, the footage sometimes looks almost CGI...like out of a music video ( I realize it’s not😀).
This footage is so f***ing badass to top it, you would have to capsize from a shark bite to your ski, remount, paddle to shore, and... oh, wait,...never mind.
Ha Ha, I hear you, But it didn't look like this before we launched. the wind was only predicted at 30 knots and where we launch it looks like a lake. There was no ground swell predicted, that swell you see in the video was purely wind swell. The wind surprised us with 55 knots, almost double what it was predicted. That's why you have to be prepared for anything out there, the weather doesn't always come through as it was supposed to. I definitely wouldn't launch on purpose in a 55 knot wind.
Ha! I knew something was wrong with me. I always fall off on the left and can only remount on the right! Glad you are recovering so well Oscar! Super video Sharon, nice work out there in SA, the king of big downwind conditions... Amazing bombs. Nice to see someone so relaxed and in control, no wasted effort.
Sharon, thanks for sharing this inspiring experience. I've only been paddling surf skis and using a wing paddle for about 3 months now. I can't hold a candle to your Durban clips, but a few days ago, had some good surfs in a gale in Seattle. Can you share more about how the gopro is mounted on your stern? Mine is mounted directly to the deck, so the camera angle leaves a bit to be desired, though I wonder if the higher mounting brings its own issues? Can you feel it affecting your balance? czcams.com/video/hGNtAKV-ws0/video.html
Hi Jordan, Thanks so much for the comment. I just use a goose neck go pro fitting for a tiny bit of height. Its not that that high and doesn't affect my balance but seems to give a good angle.
Thanks Sharon. Feeling more comfortable in the surf ski world now after paddling a Stellar SX18x for a year in all kinds of weather. Just purchased a Stellar Eagle which is next level skill building for me - much narrower ski (17.4 inches). Wondering what ski model you are using in this video - how wide it is? You look pretty stable on this downwind run in general. Thanks again for sharing your experience with newbies like me!
really super photography / cinematography A++++++, lots of fun to watch, really super
I recently did my first surfski paddle (Fishoek, Cape Town). Then I see this. That is some gnarly stuff. Then you fell off....

Wow Sharon you're my hero, so inspirational, watching carve that surf up, what amazing conditions
What a brave soul, you have climbed the Everest of the sea👍👍👍
Great footage. Nice wind. Warm water no doubt? Superwoman remount. Can teach the old dogs a few things about remounting!
Best downwind video i've ever seen
Thanks SO much
I'm like a cat watching a bird through a window with this video. Wish we had warm water like that off the west coast of Vancouver Island!
Great video! Those conditions look so fun.
My go to video when looking for a bit of downwind inspiration - I may have watched this a "few" times ;-) . Love your vids Sharon!
Ah thanks so much David, really appreciate your comments and for watching.
Always a pleasure to watch your clips

Incredible!! Thanks for taking the time to share.
Awesome run!

Thanks so much David. Most of it is in slow motion. Its the only way you can really see the waves forming and the size
Freaking awesome!!! The waves looked massive even with wide angle lens!!
Great re-mount. No fear. Great video. Great job Sharon! 🇿🇦
Awesome skills, bravery and endurance👍
Thanks so much for the generous words Josue
Amazing 👏. I'm just starting out on a surfski and I can't imagine being on water even half that size! Even boat wake on the river has me wobbling like a Buddha on a Cork 😢
Ha Ha, thanks so much for the comment Chris.
Love that you have some of the gurgle and wind noise. Fabulous.
매우 아름다운 서핑입니다. 그리고 대단한 스킬과 맨탈 입니다 !
Championship, a woman without fear, great skills
DREAM DOWNWIND !! - I guess it is SUMMER in Durban and it can get that big ... someone to pick you up at the finish is very helpful - AWESOME !

Amazing. Posting, sharing.
Great video and amazing conditions. I noticed the rudder cover is moving around relative to the frame of the image - is this a stabilized camera?
Awesome video! Looks like the biggest conditions I've seen in any of your video's. How big were those waves?
Thanks so much Chris.. not sure how big they were as that level wind was not predicted and i think that swell was actually wind swell only.
Very cool.
How is the moment when you find yourself looking at the ocean and think "let's do it"?

Epic :)
Perfect conditions, lots of fun
👏👌
awesome footage!
Thanks so much Richie
Waw!!!💪🏻
Wow, that was intense to watch! Great footage Sharon, pity you lost your favourite cap!
so, do you end up like really far from where you start? how do you get home?
This is a 16 km course. We have our boats at the club at the start and we park our cars at the end and uber to the start and paddle back to our cars.
Sharon , you lost your cap . I just hate it when that happens ..... lol , must of been blowing out there .
Awsome run, what ski are you using?
Thanks so much, I use a Carbonology Zest, such an amazing boat on a downwind
@@sharonbarmstrong yeh for sure, you have complete control of it🤙
Need to work on your right brace😂😂. As always everybody falls off on the right hand side but a very good right side remount.
Ha! I knew something was wrong with me. I always fall off on the left and can only remount on the right! Glad you are recovering so well Oscar! Super woman... 🤔😊
Tether that hat... ;-)

I got chewed out by my wife for watching a video of a cool chick.
Amazing!
