    The Subaru WRX has a soft spot in almost any JDM car lover's heart. It has a signature great sound, they have all wheel drive, and an amazing rally history. This EJ207 Subaru Bugeye WRX makes 400HP to the wheels and today we ask the question - how is the Bugeye generation fully built at full stop? Let's go for a drive and talk about it.

    Honestly, saying "is it worth it?" is very subjective. You only have to think price for performance if that's what you're after and not, would you be happy with the cost it would take to enjoy the car, even if it's not the fastest or the most reliable to redline and flat-foot everywhere. If everyone went with the cheapest and most reliable offerings, there wouldn't be so many diverse builds with different functions. It's nice to see something that's different, even if it cost more money and time than most people who want to go fast or look cool would be willing to commit too.

      @DreBruh Před 2 lety +18

      The thing is that this isn’t different anymore. Subarus are arguably the most driven cars in the car community now. Maybe it was different 10 years ago but not too much anymore unless it’s an older gen.
      To each their own tho i do agree

    • @R3AL-AIM
      @R3AL-AIM Před 2 lety +6

      @@DreBruh That would be true for this car and I would agree, but I hear that phrase used towards so many others who aspire to build something uncommon or just not really done before. So much negative energy over a build that it eventually keeps some from ever being completed, because repeted outside influence of something like "Just get an S chassis and do an LS swap bro, this is dumb and a waste of money" makes them cave and give up. It's a shame. More or less giving up on what they want, to get what everyone else has.

      @@R3AL-AIM I agree man. There’s definitely no need to shame. Everyone has their hobby and can do what they want in their life to reach happiness.
      I don’t feel like David was shaming tho. He was just being honest saying that it’s not the best bang for your buck for horsepower. It’s still a great car and once again i agree no need to shame

      @@DreBruh I don't think he was shaming him either and I definitely don't mean for the comment to come off that way!!! I just know alot of people will take his comment that way and see Subaru's for an easy example as just wasteful junk and there are better, cheaper options out there. I guess I was more or less making a statement to clarify what David was saying throughout the entire video. You have to like, want and actually enjoy the car. Not just expect to be blown away like it's a super car and it be perfect in anyway

    Just cracked 300whp on the 207 with stock top end on 91 oct, 61mm ball bearing good for 500whp+ and man is it ever an event. In my experience, by knowing the right professionals to build these motors, taking care of the car and not driving like an idiot is where your reliability is going to lie…power on the other hand is a different subject all together. These cars were never designed to push ridiculous amounts of power. Many look at a number and like to judge off assumptions while listening to haters of the Subaru platform. If you ever have the chance to get in one built properly and take it for a drive through some tight backroads, trust me I bet you’ll want one because I used to be a hater too. My new happy place is behind the wheel of one of these cars:)

      I have a bugeye and swapped it to an ej207, v7. Sadly I think it has knock already and it’s always hard to know what really caused it, because we’ve been chasing down issues for a bit with some hesitations and other random things and I haven’t driven it too much. As cool as a jdm motor is, if this one goes I may just go RA block in the future because I don’t feel like dealing with a used motor again. The 207 is supposed to be one of the most reliable ejs out there and they aren’t cheap to just keep trying new ones so idk. My power goal was only 350/400 max because I want to just enjoy it on the mountains but have a bit more power than normal. Hopefully it’ll be a resolved issue this year, I want to save it!

    • @noahgillis6977
      @noahgillis6977 Před 2 lety +2

      @@mattswank unfortunately if these motors aren’t taken care of properly they do become subject to problems. There’s some rules of thumb to keep them running perfectly that some people completely ignore as you have now discovered. I got mine rebuilt almost two years ago and having cared for it the best I could, it’s a fantastic little motor capable of 450whp+ now. If you are looking to keep the 207 I would recommend having it torn down or perhaps checked to see if it has caused any block damage to the motor itself. If it hasn’t it should be perfectly salvageable. If the block is damaged I would then recommend buying a 2.5 bottom end short block and using your heads; one of the best flowing heads Subaru has ever made. Best of luck to you my friend.

    I built a 2004 forester xt that I rescued from a dealership. It was traded in by an older lady that was the original owner. She got tired of throwing money trying to fix an evap code. Ended up being the tank and I figured it’d be a good project car.
    So I Sti 6 speed swap, stage 1 exedy clutch, dccd controller from I wire, wrx kyb struts with 1 inch front and 3/4 inch lowering springs with saggy butt spacers, front and rear wrx TR calipers cuz I figured it was cheaper than brembos. white line tie rod ends, lower ball joints, rear lateral links, and sway bar end links. I also replaced the wheel bearings cuz I didn’t want to worry about also 2 were loose. Turbo xs cat back exhaust, I think it sounds good. Finally the cliche rpf1 wheels. I like they way they look and I’ve heard nothing but great things about them.
    So I figured I’d save up for the swap and do it all in one go while replacing the tank and everything associated with it.

    The problem with Subarus is the money you have to put to make a certain type of horsepower. From my standpoint, Subarus are reliable if you have the rights mods/tune. For example, EJ207 come forged from the factory but they aren’t cheap since they were never made for the us market. Even same for a regular usdm wrx, the EJ205 is a pretty stout motor, you just have to do a little more maintenance on them depending on power gains. On the other hand, EJ255/257 are easier to make power but so much weaker than their smaller brothers since they’re bigger and more of an open deck which is why they need supporting mods more than the 2.0s but then supporting mods/power mods are expensive for them. My point is if you want a Subaru, any turbo Subaru, keep it under 350hp for the 2.0s and do maintenance and you’ll get 200k miles on it and 400hp for the 2.5s but keep some money on the side cause the 2.5s love eating rings. Keeping them stock too helps but I definitely suggest getting an exhaust at least to free up some of that heat out of the engine. And also don’t do donuts/slides on one side for more than 15 seconds cause the pickup tube in Subarus aren’t efficient for G pulling. With that being said, you’ll spend less money buying a 335 and modding it but it will give you more problems than subarus

      The other problem is people wanting high horse power Subarus. They just aren’t made for it and when you get too much power in them you won’t be able to enjoy them on the mountains where they belong due to larger turbo lag, so my goal would be 350/400 max

    As a bugeye 207 owner for 10years now, couple points. The glass tranny is a 02 early 03 issue. Late 03 Subaru actually tossed a RA tranny in there with a front LSD, which is one of the better USDM 5 speeds you can get. The 207 is a fantastic engine, and I have a feeling the owner either still had a USDM tach or didnt mention the 207s 8250 redline to you, thats one of the really fantastic things about the 207. You are absolutely right about subarus are not good for Dollar to Horsepower. Now thats where some of the aftermarket turbos dont really gain you that much. I have the stock VF30 on mine, which is the second biggest stock turbo Subaru has ever used(22b is the biggest and almost the same except the VF30 has a smaller exhaust housing so it spools sooner). And the driving charistics of staying stock 207 v7 turbo is very different than a aftermarket turbo. I hit full boost at 3300 rpm(19 psi) and have a very good tune. So I am pretty much always in power, combined with lightweight flywheel replaced the whole stock intake tubing 3 port boost controller ect, makes for a very fast revving pretty quick car. Ive played around with alot of USDM stis over the years, both with stock turbos and aftermarket big turbos and ive been able to stay with them or pass them. Not really ragging on people who go all out with aftermarket turbos, but they are all introducing boost lag, which to be real a subaru off boost isnt great, more saying different builds can feel/drive very very differently

    It's really difficult to explain the charm you get from the 02-05 WRX with the 2.0 in it. I just bought a really clean, bone stock blobeye last weekend and I gotta say, it is the perfect daily driver. There's something about these older models that make them a blast to own. The driving experience is very mechanical and engaging. You really have to *drive* the car. The steering is heavy, the clutch is stiff, it rides firm, and the gears have nicely pronounced gates that feel awesome. If you want something exciting to drive that makes sense in every weather condition and won't kill you on gas, WRX is one of your best options. Great car.

    Between my three project cars two were built from the beginning by myself, and the other was previously built by someone else.
    As you would say: point of the matter is -- buying someone else's project ends up not saving as much money as you would think.
    More likely than not you have to fix many things the prev owner did or overlooked, and many times it's the little things that cost you the most as they are worn or about to fail, or in some cases just end up being a massive safety issue.
    In my case the car blew a torsen that was improperly shimmed within the first year, many many oil leaks, impoper gauge wiring that had to be replaced from the firewall back, etc etc etc etc.

If it had time between classes I'd sometimes go sit in my car (or change spots to hear mine) and try to guess which cars were driving through the parking deck and see how often I was right, or very close.

    my bugeye engine died about 6 months after i bought it 2nd hand... my first scooob... live n learn.
    forging the engine was going to cost me £3k+ ... a brand new ej207 cost me £2200 at the time (pre Cvid!)
    ARP studs and cosworth head gaskets and the 205 cylinder heads mated to it. New water lines and bunch of other stuff... engine and gearbox mounts. pink injectors 550cc ish and the STI turbo.. makes about 280bhp safely.
    Then a big set of D2 6 pots up front with 4 pot rear and 356mm discs all round and BC coilovers and an Exedy clutch
    then just recently dropped a subaru STI 6 speed in it after i had it fully rebuilt.. totally transformed the cars driveability.
    i've had WAY more fun in this bugeye WAGON than i have tuning and trying to drive 4 skylines... its not even close for me personally - hooked

    That extra money, though, makes it all worth it in the end. These cars are a blast and when you can take down faster cars on the track, even with the weight (of the VA), it just makes it all that more enjoyable. There are obviously other choices for HP and whatever else but I couldn’t see myself enjoying anything else as much. Ive driven a lot of those other cars, and I still choose my sti.

    I only ask because i fitted an EJ207 to mine a couple years ago (brand new engine from Subaru!) and i didn't realise it could rev out a bit more.
    I'm running an STI turbo and pink injectors and its making about 14 psi - probs 250 bhp... i dunno... not tested it out in anger lol.
