      @@MrTruckerf This!
The crushing majority of people have no idea about picking or decoding a lock like this. And amongst thieves it's just barely more common knowledge. To a thief it doesn't pay off knowing the ins and outs of decoding these locks. A battery powered angle grinder works on all locks no matter the design or construction. And if the lock would be built to withstand the angle grinder odds are the door or whatever the lock is securing isn't as sturdy.
Brute force is the most universal "skill" you can apply to doors and locks. And if brute force doesn't make it you're not using enough of it...
It's a bit cliché but oh so true. The small percentage who do know how to decode these locks are generally not the ones you need to worry about. That is unless your main concern is someone getting in without leaving signs of entry. Then this becomes a much bigger problem and you probably shouldn't buy your locks at Walmart.
Having said all of this I still think it's ridiculous how these known weaknesses remain in products that are not even cheap, and how they keep popping up in new lock designs time after time with only minor differences, and usually not enough to even slow down someone who ahs learned to pick or decode one of them.

However, when the shackle is under high tension, my wheels do not turn at all.
Loosening the tension a little, the wheels turn in ascending order only and lock at 0.
Only under no load can wheels turns in both directions. This is tough to do when the chain fills most of the space in the shackle.

The same method works with all mechanical multi-wheel combination locks. Find something that differs for each wheel, then rotate all wheels syncronized to move the gate in place. If you're familiar with the specific lock implementation, you know exactly how much you need to move the wheels to move from the position where you felt the difference to open lock position. At worst it would need 9 extra tries.
And as for feeling the difference in wheels, you basically have to guess left or right side of the wheel to insert your feeling gauge.

The important thing to understand about the pin tumbler lock picking is that you want top of the keyway tensioner and you want a tensioner that's really snuggly fit. That means you'll need minimum of 3 top of the keyway tensioners (3 most common thicknesses) to be able to pick typical pin tumbler locks. The actual pick isn't that important. lock companies should hire this man to test their locks so as to eliminate all vulnerabilities

    • @jdotoz
      @jdotoz Před rokem

There's a reason these vulnerabilities are out there and it basically comes down to money. Design and testing costs money, as does extra material needed to reduce vulnerabilities, and I would guess that the market has shown many times by now that it just doesn't care that much about vulnerabilities if allowing them keeps the price low.
It's the same thing with air travel. Everyone complains about air travel, but everyone also looks for the cheapest fare they can find. This creates a natural tension that usually prevents airlines from addressing complaints about the flying experience.

    • @quillmaurer6563

The other question is how big a problem theft via lock vulnerability actually is. An expert like LPL can get these open pretty quickly, but I doubt it's actually so common in the real world. It requires specialized skills, specific knowledge of each type or style of lock, and so on. I suspect it's far more common for thieves to cut the lock, or more often whatever the lock is attached to. Or to seek out things that were not locked in a secure way - when I was in University I saw so many bicycles on campus that were locked in a way that someone with any knowledge of bicycles could easily steal by doing things like taking a wheel off. Some were locked by the wheel, someone could take the wheel off and take the rest of the bike, then steal a wheel off a different bike. Bicycle theft was a major issue, but I doubt the thieves were picking locks.

I have this exact same lock. Use it for internal gates so you can only get to them from inside the yard. I bought it for weather resistance vs security. The rubber flap just trapped water and froze when cold so I ripped it off. Locking numbers are at an angle too which is a little annoying. See how it holds up to the weather. Last few combo locks (175) failed after 6 months. Masterlock kept sending me replacements but the just didn't hold up.

Talking about Master Combination Padlock, I bought a Model 7620EURD from Tesco and found it has some funny characteristics.
On the 3 digit padlock, only the topmost digit need to be exact. The second and third digit could be the exact one you set, or the one on the opposite side (Say, if you set it to 0 then 5 will open it as well)
So assume you never heard all these techniques, by brute force trying the combinations, all you need to try is only 10 x 5 x 5 = 250, way less than the 1000 combinations it supposed to have.
    Very interesting...

Master lock has the same flaw in the brass 3 number combination locks. There's another technique where you just tension it and spin all 3 wheels at once as fast as you can. You can get them open in 30 seconds or less. I was playing with one in math class when the teacher asked me if I knew what the odds where I'd actually open the scrambled code? It literally dropped as soon as he finished asking. "Pretty good..." I replied with a smirk.

Perhaps cutting it out of nitinol to allow for heat reforming would be best ? I'm not sure I'm planning on buying a laser cutter after I find a place to live and I'll do some experiments.
I was also able to heat treat the notch decoder after reforming it to make it slightly better
