Tarikh Episode 620
In This Episode Nikhil talks about Alexander in India. During Alexander the Great's invasion of India in the 4th century B.C., he encountered Dandamis, a distinguished philosopher, Brahmin, and gymnosophist. This sage, also known as Mandanes, played a pivotal role in the intellectual exchanges that unfolded in the Indian subcontinent.
As Alexander ventured near Taxila, he discovered Dandamis in the woods, leading to a profound meeting between the Macedonian conqueror and the wise Indian philosopher. Dandamis, deeply rooted in his philosophical principles, engaged in discussions with Alexander, offering insights into Indian wisdom and spirituality. His teachings and interactions with Alexander showcased the rich philosophical traditions of ancient India.
Dandamis was also the mentor of Kalanos, another renowned gymnosophist, who accompanied Alexander to Persis. The encounters with these Indian philosophers left a lasting impact on Alexander, challenging his perspectives on life and mortality.
The intellectual exchange between Alexander and Dandamis exemplifies the cultural fusion that occurred during this historical period, influencing the convergence of Greek and Indian philosophical thought. These encounters marked a significant chapter in the cross-cultural dialogue between the Hellenistic world and ancient India.

• While in India, Alexander the Great encountered the Gymnosophists or
“naked sages”. Who were they?
• According to various chroniclers (Megasthenes, Plutarch, Strabo, and
others), the Gymnosophists included both Brahmins and Shramanas
• However, the Greek descriptions of the Gymnosophists are more
reminiscent of Digambar Jain monks:
- Vegetarian, naked, meditative, striving for moral perfection,
philosophers, not involved in ritual sacrifices, indifferent to pleasure
and pain, and allowing themselves to die alone in the forest
- They could not have been Buddhist monks as Buddhist monks never go
naked and were generally not vegetarian during this period
- Brahmins also do not go naked nor practice the slow death cycle described
• Alexander is said to have met with a number of Gymnosophists including
“Calanus” who traveled west with Alexander and “Dandamis” who fasted
unto death. Alexander was deeply impressed by their character• Philostratus (3
rd cent. AD), in his Life of Apollonius, wrote of

No you and even this video is wrong. Its neither Jain muni nor the " Naga sadhus" which came much later in medieval age . Alexander encountered the dandi sanyansis or as the Greeks called them damdamis ... Jain ascetic do not carry the Sanayas stick or staff , it is only in the tradition of Vedic dharma that sanyasis are allowed to carry the staff , thr ek dandis and tri dandis are still present in India...The sanyasis whom Alexander encountered may have been real advanced sanyasis or known as Turiyatitas who roams in a digambar manner without any attachment to material world
