    Sorry, but the Plymouth Valiant of 1965 had a rear glass of 14.4 cubic feet, or 172.8”, so it was larger. Ever hear of the old Hurst “Hemi Under Glass”? That’s the one…Awesome video tho, love any Vette content!

      That's a good bit of trivia. I've heard of the Hemi under glass, but not the exact specs. I'll have to look into it deeper. Car trivia is always fun to learn more about👍

    Do you have any glass with 4 holes? We accidentally bought one with 3. Do you have any suggestions on using the one with 3 holes? Is it possible to cut 2 more holes?

    Hey i’ve got an ‘86 corvette for parts. Its got the brake light attached.
    It seems you left out how to access the pins for the hinges. Once It unbolts from the inside of the car is it supposed to lift right up as one assembly so you can take it apart on its own, or should it lift apart as its individual pieces as you show here? I Just don’t wanna fudge it up… 😅 Thanks a lot very informative video!

      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the positive feedback, glad to help out👍.
      GM never intended for the body colored hinge plate to be removed from the glass. They wanted the entire assembly serviced as a whole unit, so they glued the hinge plate to the glass with VERY strong epoxy.
      Once you remove the 13MM hinge bolts from the halo, you'll be able to lift the whole thing out as one piece. You can remove the 3rd brake light from the hinge plate pretty easily, but unless you have a compelling reason I would leave the hinge plate attached to the glass. I've seen more than a few hatch glasses shattered during the hinge plate removal process.

      Funny enough i’m more interested in the halo plate than the glass, as I need to modify it for a special project…

    Good video. I don't need a rear glass but I do need a blue tint acrylic Targa top for my 85. Any leads?

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Lee, thanks for the feedback👍. The acrylic tops for the C4's are becoming darn near impoasible to find in anything but trashed condition. You may have noticed, but even the top on this car with only 60K miles is trashed, with another broken one leaning up against the wall behind the car.
      I would recommend keeping your eye out for a private sale of a good top via the normal sales avenues. They pop up from time to time, you just have to be quick about snagging it when it becomes available.

      @lapranch Před 3 lety +1

      @@VetteSource yeah I'll keep searching. Unfortunately since I have an 85, I have to find a top from an 84, 85 or early 86 which greatly limits my options

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 3 lety +1

      True, but an inexpensive hack is just to install the A-Pillar bracket from a later year if you find a later top. The brackets are easier to find than the tops😁.

    How do you take off the brake light on top of the hatch? I need to replace one of the four bulbs.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před rokem +1

      Hey John, when you have the hatch in the upright position, you'll see the retaining screws on the underside of the filler panel. I believe they are T30 torx bolts, either 2 or 3 of them. Once removed you can pull the 3rd brake light away from the filler panel and get to the bulb housing.

  • @anthonywalker5012
    @anthonywalker5012 Před 2 lety +1

    I liked the video, but would like to see what epoxy adhesive was used in gluing the panel to the glass and if there is a need for a alignment jig to re-install or if there are any tips on that alignment. I have removed my 3rd brake light assembly from the glass on my 84 here in Australia as it is in the middle of a restoration, and used a heat gun to remove the panel from the glass so that it could be painted. It is a low production two-tone blue manual transmission car, so I want to make sure that the paint is as good if not better than factory, so as a result all hardware including bumper belts have been removed and all panels sanded back to bare SMC to get rid of the last shitty paint job that was done...I took off in order, a clear coat, base coat, primer, then the original base coat and epoxy primer to get back to SMC, but the OEM panels are straight as an arrow and removing the shitty paint job removed the shiity prep flaws of the last paint job that even I could see and I'm not a professional body guy. Any tips on the adhesive for the panel to the glass would be great though if you could share.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety

      Hey Anthony, sounds like you're being very thorough with the restoration of your Corvette. I'm sure it will turn out great.
      Funny thing about those rear hinge panels is that GM went to the trouble to specify in the service manual that they should not be removed from the glass and serviced as one unit due to leakage concerns. Im not sure what type of epoxy was used originally, but it is very strong and doesn't separate that easily.
      However, if it has been removed for refinishing, you can use butyl tape. It will provide a very strong and waterproof seal. As for alignment, I would recommend setting the plate and glass in place with some tension on the 2 retaining through bolts. From there you can square it up in the body halo cutout, then carefully remove and mark on the underside it's exact location relative to the glass so you remove again to apply the butyl tape.
      Let me know how it goes👍.

    • @anthonywalker5012
      @anthonywalker5012 Před 2 lety +1

      @@VetteSource Thanks for the tips. yeah I am pretty sure that the epoxy they used is the same as what was used to bind the body panels. It is that very strong green looking adhesive. I haven't been able to figure out what it is or if it is still available. The 84 isn't as cool as the ZR1, but it has a 7.1lt 434ci SBC in it, with a Tremec 5 speed. Has Edelbrock Pro Flo XT and MPFI. 8 years in the making and I'm still going. Hoping to finish the heater and cooling plumbing and then straight onto the custom 1-7/8" headers into a twin 3" system. As soon as that is tig welded and ceramic coated, I can finally fire it up after nearly 3 years of being installed into the car...a heart attack slows you up everytime.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety

      Yep, but those kind of health speed bumps just make you stronger😁. Come to think of it, Lord Fuzor makes a bonding adhesive that I believe is the same green tint like the factory original. It may in fact be the factory OEM supplier, because I remember it being mentioned in the factory service manual.

    Can only the top Panel and third brake light be removed? ( not the glass ) Reason: I have a ZR1 (93) with some paint defects (reactions) to the Panel only and I dont want to take the whole car into paint shop for weeks only to have this panel painted, I want to remove just the panel and bring it alone to the shop. can this be done?

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety

      Hey Robert, if you're referring to the painted hinge panel that tilts up with the rear glass when opened, I'm afraid it's pretty difficult to separate and actually NOT recommended by GM. If it's just the upper painted part of the third brake light housing, that piece can be removed from the underside of the panel and then disassembled for repaint.

      @@VetteSource THe Third Brake light housing CHML is fine. Its the flat panel like in your video you showed loose. That is the panel I need painted not the third brake light. somehow your guys removed yours..so my question is can the panel itself be removed without removing .unbolting the glass even though GM wouldn't recommend it. How did your guys do it
      Thank you for your attention.

    • @VetteSource
      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety

      Yep, gotcha. The only way to remove it is by taking the rear hatch assembly with panel completely off the car, then using a heat gun/piano wire to soften and cut through the epoxy that bonds the panel and glass together.
      From what I can tell, this was a potential major source of water leakage when pulled apart, which is most likely why GM specified that it be serviced as one whole unit in the FSM.
      My opinion is that any competent body shop should be able to paint the panel on the car as well as off the car, it just might take a bit more taping and prep time than they normally like to do. Regardless of which option you select, it will most likely be stuck at the shop for a bit while they take care of it.
      Let me know how it turns out👍.

      @VetteSource  Před 2 lety +1

      There is actually a special tool for that. It looks like a socket with two pegs sticking out of it. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the tool.
      Remember though, it is recommended by GM to not remove the mount plate from the glass, even if you're doing it to repaint. Gluing it back together and getting the alignment correct is very difficult.
