    Love the drink in a regular glass, perfect for the highball on the go. Sure, at the time this car was completely out classed by all the competition, but.....I used to get these frequently as rentals (free upgrade, yay me) and I thought they were really put together well and albeit front wheel drive, still had the classic Cadillac torque power flex and engine grumble to let you know that it was a Cadillac. Growing up as a Cadillac kid, I immediately recognized it every time. It really wasn’t a bad car at all, just outclassed for sure.

    I own and drive my grandfathers 1992 Deville. He cherished it very much, and out of its whole life span, only received 79,000 original miles. While yes, many other cars of the same year were running laps around the Deville in terms of styling, engineering, technology, etc, it just has that weird old Cadillac charm to it. Incredibly comfy with veeery soft suspension, and a V8 that, while it only churns out a relatively pathetic 200 HP, after you drive it, you realise it really doesn't matter. That same V8 produced a relatively healthy 275 lb ft of torque, and it's a very smooth torque curve that just glides you down the road. This car was never meant for sporty driving, (watch the Motorweek '89 Fleetwood review, yeeesh) so the car *reeeaally* didn't need extra power, but what it was meant for was setting the cruise control at 60-70 mph on the highway, and just relaxing. You guide it down the road with power steering that is so powerful, and I'm not kidding, you can drive with just your index finger. Combine that with seats that are so incredibly soft that you literally just sink into them, you just have to experience it. Of course, I'm biased because of this stupid thing called sentimental value, but all of these just add to the American luxury charm of it. And besides, at least it wasn't a Northstar car!

    • @Kenneybrock
      @Kenneybrock Před 3 lety +12

      Couldn't agree more. I blame auto reviewers like Motorweek for RUINING the luxury car. Cars in this class were NEVER meant to run though a slalom at 40 MPH, yet they were held to the same standard as a Corvette. Today's "luxury" cars ride more like sports cars with firm seating and tight steering and NOTHING like the Town Cars and Devilles from the pre-90's era.

    • @alc.8415
      @alc.8415 Před 3 lety +4

      I second the agree. Funny thing is, though, the Koreans are resurrecting the traditional luxury car with the likes of various offerings from Hyundai (and now Genesis)... their main priority is luxury and comfort. Who knows, the reign of the stiff, hard, European luxury car might soon see the writing on the wall.

      @@turnne The Cadillac Deville was meant to appeal to the older generation, the generation that grew up and lived in the 50's-60's, where luxury cars like this were the norm. Its old school luxury. Everything is soft, the seats are soft, the steering is soft, the ride is soft, it's a big cruiser, just like Devilles of past. And I'm gonna be honest, while it maybe doesn't feel like you're driving a bank vault, because I will agree it does feel pretty vague, it's definitely built like one. You can't be soft when you shut the door, you gotta CLOSE it. It's a heavy door that closes with a noticeable thunk when you shut it, just like cars of the 50's and 60's. Every Switch is a metal switch that you gotta PRESS, and they respond with a loud click, just like older cars. It's not perfect, but this car was never trying to lead the luxury industry, it was an old school design philosophy that would appeal to generations of older. The generation that were looking at their final car before going to that guy upstairs in the sky, something that was familiar with soft suspension and a torquey smooth pushrod V8. That's what this car was made for.

One of the best features was the large rear doors. My father was pretty unstable getting in and out as he got older and a lot of trips to the doctors. He had plenty of room and door width to maneuver with this one. The 1998 Sedan that I picked up later was not as easy. And the Marquis “Forget a bout it” l still would like to find another. Say what you will about this generation of Cadillac. These were such a nice upgrade from the DeVilles a couple generations prior. Sure, Lexus and Acura were taking over the market at that time in terms of fit & finish, build quality, and prestige, but you could never beat the soft ride of this generation of DeVille. No longer considered the first choice in executive motoring, they were still handsome cars in their day, and represented what is probably the last generation of genuine American luxury. My high school English teacher drove one of these everyday, and would often give me a lift to school in the mornings. I will never forget how it felt to ride in the backseat of a (then) brand new Cadillac Sedan DeVille. The ride was so super soft, yet extremely controlled as it glided down the boulevard. Mama died from complications of intestinal cancer at the young age of 69 in 2011. Even though her Cadillac was almost 20 years old by then, she had only driven it 34,000 miles! Still garaged and still looked new. Sadder still, my father eventually handed it over to my undeserving baby brother who was extremely irresponsible. Cadillac did not waste their brand. Politicians and governments interfered in the US auto production by imposing regulations on US manufactured cars and imported car brands did not even need to meet.
      US car manufacturing become so uncompetitive due to the regulations that foreign cars were allowed to be imported to the US and undercut the US auto industry.
      The reason why VW cheated on emissions was due to the fact there was a 40 year culture of allowing foreign cars to arrive into the US making claims that were not true and nobody would really call them out on it.
      US auto industry was so regulated that even the production lines were subjected to extreme regulations that no other manufacturer had to meet.
      In the 1960s US cars were more reliable than German and Japanese cars but by the late 1970s the quality had gone down.
      You will find that the average driver of Bentley, Mercedes, Rolls and so on are all older due to the fact it is only they who as a demographic an afford more expensive cars. It is like saying the main demographic got Ferrari cars are wealthy people.
      The main demographic in the US for Jaguar was those over 65 years of age.
