I bought 11 as tiny plants. All of these are now at least 8 feet after ten years and with lots of leaf and structure. They need a lot of water, especially when grown in pots. In hot weather they need even more water. A strong wind will dry out a large pot in a matter of hours. The experts keep warning people about over watering them and that they don't like wet feet. I water mine loads and they grown bigger each year. Even the hottest summer in the UK on record a while ago, resulted in minimum leaf scorch. These plants needs tons of water. The sun cannot do that kind of damage alone. I learned from keeping them for some years.Water them well. Expect some leaf scorch in younger plants. If a young plant is underwatered, it roots will not develop well and it will grown really slow.

Thank you for the tip about removing the dead/burned leaves. Some Japanese maples can do better in full sun than others, but most do prefer shade after 1:00 pm. I recently read that another thing that can causes their leaves to appear 'burned' is hard water, and so if you have hard water in your area, it's good to give them a good, full watering now and then to flush the plant andthat you can also add some epsom salt to the soil to help counteract the hard water damage. I guess Japanese maples also love coffee grounds because it helps make their soil more acidic (they prefer slightly acidic soil). Again, thank you for the tip about removing the leaves! :)

I know that Japanese maples are capable of a second leafing in the same season, but I had no idea that it was beneficial to remove the damaged leaves. And please ignore the complainers. Some people feel so very brave running someone else down in a public forum. Cowards.
Lets try to list some other possible causes in addition to "not enough water" and "too much sun": Anything that can damage the root system. - Too much water and bad drainage, the roots rotting. - Rodents eating the roots, or a pot full of ants. - Too much fertilizer. - The plant set too deep, some times even affecting the graftage, some roots should be visible. If it looks similar but mainly new branches are dying, it could be Verticillium Wilt. In this case there will be black spots visible in the wood if you cut off an affected branch. The treatment is to brutally cut off all affected parts, disinfecting the tool not to spread the disease to other plants and hope for the best. (or to burn the plant and contaminated soil)
I just planted a Japanese maple, a bloodgood and I was not familiar with Japanese maples but the care tag said it needs at least 6 hours of sun so I planted it in direct sunlight. Not only are the leaves browning but also, there are tiny holes in the leaves too, as if an insect is getting to it. I have to make sure no animals are peeing on it, so I’m putting chicken wire fencing around it for now until it grows more. I’m worried about it now. I don’t really want to uproot it, in fear I’ll def. kill it
Pullung leaves off your maple if its in a pot will weaken the tree over time. Do it one year. Avoid doing the next 2 yrs. Or you can cut only the damaged leaves off. Leaving the leaf stalk behind. Pulling the leaves off like that can damage the buds that ur wanting to open for the new leaves. If the tree is in the ground by all means pull away. In a pot you need to be more concious.
not so sure I agree..I had an issue on a bloodgood with leaves drying out and burning on the edges ..its in the ground in north AL, middle of the yard , no shade going on year 2. It did fine come spring but began to decline as summer progressed..Leaves dried out ,limbs started to turn dark.. My first thought was sun burn with the extreme temps we see...One night I found the culprit with a flashlight. The whitefly was to blame..These pest will cut small slits in the bark and drink the fluids needed by the leaves hence drying out the leaves allowing burn, and creating perfect conditions for sooty mold to set in turning the limbs black, the offspring of the whitefly is on the underside of the leaves if present chipping in on the condition.. You must discourage these pest to gain a healthy tree..there are many things on the market to do this. Neem oil helps or bayer makes a soil drench that will do the trick..Then you can pluck the leaves and so on

Greetings. Have had a Japanese maple for about 7 years now with no issues. It receives water 4 days a week from the sprinkler system and has been healthy for all 7 years. While it has been more mild than usual here in NJ, all the leaves shriveled up but didnt fall off. Should it be cause for concern? Should I just hand water a bit more? The only aspect that changed is I pruned in May and this happened right after I pruned. Not sure if it was a coincidence or not but figured that I would mention it.

Thanks for the video. How can you identify the difference between leaf blemishes caused by poor conditions vs fungal infections such as Verticillium wilt? Also, are similar leaf blemishes caused by too little drainage? My young red maple is curling it's leaves inwards with some browning forming from the tips of the leaves. I don't think it's had too much sun or dried out. My hunch is that the soil in the container is too heavy. But I don't know much.

When I received them I soaked them in warm warm water for about a couple of hours. Then I planted them in pots then covered them with a plastic bag. Our weather here in Florida has been cold 40 degrees and night then during the day about 74 degrees, it’s been 2 weeks now no sprouting. Any suggestions? Or you think the seeds were not fresh seeds? Do you know where I can get fresh autumn moon maple seeds?
I have a small potted Japanese maple and all the leaves are turning dry and crispy. Watering wasn't the issue. I checked the root ball for rotting and still no avail. Can't figure out why it's dying
we planted a small Japanese maple about 3 weeks ago. The leaves on the top (like an umbrella) have turned brown and are dead. There are beautiful leaves (green and red) under the canopy of dead leaves. The soil appears to test perfect about a 7 with moisture test. It is completely shaded from west sun and wind. It does get morning (until about 11 am) full sun. We did have a freeze (30 degrees) and we covered the tree with plastic for about 48 hours. Could that have harmed or shocked the tree?
3 of mine acers suddenly have gone this way. We have had 2019 very cold morning and then very hot afternoons. I wasnt sure about fungal infections either. I will strip the leaves and water more.

Probably too much water.. could be the roots are rotting.. Or you keep giving it only a bit of water too often. It's better to give a lot of water and then wait a propper amount of time before watering again.

(if it's the case disinfect the tool before using it on other plants) The official treatment is to burn the plant and send all the earth that might be contaminated to a waste disposal site. But before that you can try to brutally remove all the affected parts of the plant and hope for the best. (some had good luck only doing that)

My Rhode Island Red got beat last year here in Oregon. The sun fried the hell out of it after the rains came and went.

tinaa sutton I’ve done both methods the way he does it and also clipping at the leaf base. clipping is definitely the only way I do it now.

My Bloodgood Japanese Maple never turns red. It remains green. New leaves grow in red and quickly go green. It is in full sun. Should I move it?
