Thank you for this video it was a bit scary seeing them up close but very informative 😂 What about pest on soil? They look brownish maybe a little shiny? Are they good or bad, any idea of how to get rid of them?
@@denisep3553 Great question! I forgot to mention soil bugs here, I'll either include them in the next video or make a separate video about them. From what I know right now, the white bugs (actual bugs not just bits) are bad, the yellow mites that I have are good and so are the small thin bugs called springtails - they both make the soil better, so they actually help the plants! I did hear about soil aphids which apparently are bad for plants.

I am a retired teacher and began my jungle 5 months ago when I had to leave my house with garden for a flat with a balcony. 77 plants already and 😡first intruders which I could not identify under the leaves. Great video covering all the different Plant Pests 😊I hope you do a treatment video for Thrips! They are the one pest that I have the hardest time defeating!!
Thrips. I’ve been dealing with thrips for a year and they are the most aggravating bug! I’m constantly buying predatory mites.
Predatory mites do not work on all species of thrips. You have to ID your thrips species first before putting together management programs.
You did a good job Roos. Keep up the good work. Have had mostly mealy bugs - the love hoya - spider mites and scale. Scale seems to be the hardest to deal with. Spider mites are a big problem is not caught early. Mealy Bugs seem rather easy to deal with - unless they are in the roots and you miss them.

I was hooked at the first 2 seconds because that's exactly how I felt qbout finding white stuff on my plant and seeing bleached spots on foliage!

@@plantwithroos I think it was scale that snuck up and almost decimated my aloe collection. Brown scabs, no bumps, sucking the juice out of the leaves. It took me a while to notice the damage. My Mother Aloe survived but is no longer looking fierce.
Could you discuss pests on common types of plants, such as philodendrons "hope" , micans, Brasil, Narrow Leaf, Moonlight etc. I want so very much to get a Selloum but have been discouraged to notice how the philodendrons all seem to have pest issues, no matter how reputable the online sellers. I do my cleaning, repotting, spray down with various sprays(neem oil, spinosad, peppermint castile soap, etc.) but they persist. I've had to cut back a philo hope and micans. My narrow leaf has a growth point but I was disgusted to see more pest damage on the adult leaves and cut more off. I used a neem oil blend spray as a preventative for several years but it did nothing for thrips on my monstera. I used a systemic but still saw a few here and there. I cut off most of the leaves. Some people swear by Systemics while others say it does not work for thrips. If you could share your success stories with thrips on monsteras that would be helpful.
Finally, if you are going to discuss using systemics, it would be helpful if you discussed which plants would be damaged. I discovered the hard way after I killed my lemon cypress and almost killed euphorbia milii and poinsettia. Thanks so much for doing the series!

I do have background experience on identity and treating pest however.
Previously being in Business for 17 years and servicing both indoor and outside gardens was part of DBA Urban Gardening so ive seen my share of infestations.

You confirmed for me that I definitely have thrips on my philodendron Brazil. I've only ever seen the larvae and only two or three at a time. What I didnt know was that they lay their eggs inside the plant. Horror! I will be more diligent in checking for them. Thanks for this creepy video 😂💚

This was fantastic. I noticed two of my plants, a Schismatoglottis and an Alocasia "suddenly" yellowing. I inspected them, did not see anything with my naked eye, washed them thoroughly, but the rapid yellowing continued, and I could not attribute it to overwatering them. Upon closer inspection, I noticed what looked like white dust on the grooves and crevices of both plants. At no point did I see anything moving, but fearing pests, I immediately treated with a 3-in-1 Miticide, Insecticide, Anti-Fungal product and isolated those plants. After seeing your video, I suspect spider mites. I will treat again as per label instructions and frequently inspect all other plants in that room. Thank you for sharing this. I’m a total newbie to plants, and this is my first spring :). And I was super scared of pest as it’s the first time my plants were growing 😅. A month back I saw tiny black spots on 2 Alocasias, spider plant and my maranta. I had no idea what that was and kept looking up online but they were definitely not aphids or spider mites. And then I saw it. Thrips. And realised that was their dropping. My maranta and 1 alocasia (cuprea) really suffered. I’m hoping my maranta still makes it. Even after 2 weeks of washing and treating with neem oil, I still saw one today on the spider plant. However, I am hoping to now add a routine of cleaning leaves more often and hoping that helps 🤞. Thank you once again.
Ah that sucks, I'm sorry for you! Thrips lay eggs in the leaves so check regularly and fingers crossed 🤞🏻 you got this!

Thanks for the video, I have had a hard time trying to find out what type of parasites I have on my plants...it turns out they are Scales.
They are very small and round and grow to the size of a pinhead.

Had spider mites, thrips and mealy bugs. Mealy bugs are easiest to handle with systemic insecticide. Three waterings each 10 days and thats it :) thrips are the worst 😬😬😬

i have several videos about this! I use predatory mites in baggies and if i have adult thrips also a predatory thrips that eats those. works great!
Hi Roos do you think those bugs can live on cacti as well ?? I have not seen any on mine but I have a problem with fruit flys 🤪
hello, yes there can be bugs on cacti, I think it might be different kinds than we generally find on aroids and hoya but Ive heard mealybugs like cacti and also root mealybugs. I'm sure there are more, I'll do some research
I've had scale on my ficus benjamina and on my anthurium.
Black bean aphids also attack new fern fronds as they’re very soft and juicy, I’ve had a few infestations of them :(

Awww that sucks so much, I'm sorry to hear it. Summer Rayne once said we list have to accept that pests are part of having plants, and we should try to focus on managing them rather than trying to eradicate them... So no but it will get better? For me, using predatory mites has helped a lot cos they do the work for me ❤️❤️❤️
i got freaked out about the damage on my monsetra as it looked a lot like mosaic virus so i isolated it and bought a second one (didnt have the heart to throw it just yet) then last night i saw the same marks on my new one and hidden on it within the damage were some thrip larve. i hunted high and low on the net for similar looking damage but didnt find anything so im very happy (ish) that i now know whats causeing it so i can fix it

Love mealybugs. I had them on all my hoyas🤕 but nothing is difficult in leca. Just a bit of paraffinum liquidum and they are gone🥰 or leaf shine spray. Love all your videos😍😘

Taking a chance that you still look at comments added to 1-year old videos - which of these pests would only come out when you water your plant? I have a lemon-lime maranta cutting that’s rooted in a small grow pot. When I watered it yesterday, a few tiny silver bugs showed up on the surface of the soil, but then quickly disappeared. There’s nothing on the plant itself (it’s only two small leaves with a third on its way).
I look at all the comments! That sounds like springtails, which are good bugs that live in the soil. Nothing to worry about from the sound of it!

It is definitely impossible to avoid them in summer if you have your windows open. Now I need to get a microscope 😂SPIDER MIIIIIIIITEEEES YUCK! My God, those close ups are excellent. And thrips are the worst. Hate them, hate them, hate them so much. And I agree, throw the plant away if you have a lot of thrips. I learned that the hard way 😂 Not worth it.
Ugh. I am always looking at my plants because I am so freaked out by bugs. Expecially on the plants in my kitchen where I eat and prepare my food. I have yet to see anything but I use a magnifying glass with a light on it. Hopefully I am not just missing things but I have not seen anything weird yet!!! I need to get a microscope like you have, that may be better than just a magnifying glass. I am almost afraid to see things that my magnifying glass can't see though!! Where did you find that handy microscope? I didn't see a link or anything.

Great video Roos! I've had aphids, root mealy bugs, spider mites and thrips. Most of them showed up after i went on a holiday. It seems they know I'm gone🤔

@@plantwithroos If you know you have them you're a hero in my opinion😁 I think the hardest is identifying them early. So the examples of what the damage looks like is helpful, would love to see more of that. Maybe a bit too specific but I'm curious about the treatment of root mealies. I've tried an alcohol solution and a hydrogen peroxide solution. Both on calathea. The alcohol mix killed the plant. The hydrogen peroxide made it seem dead for a while but it recovered. I've read warm water could kill them too, I'd love to know if that works. Although I suspect, like me, you don't have any infected plants laying around to try it on😄
So Can Thrips pierce a hole in a branch of a plant? Or would it be just the leaves?
i dont know, like I said im not an expert. ive only seen them damage leaves, and preferable fresh new leaves. I hope that helps! Any other questions you have or things you'd like to see for the next video?

Tiny grey ish insects (2mm) with wings in my soil ??? dont go on a plant but growth is stunned yellowing leave tips im afraid they affecting roots.
I can't tell from just a description, best is a zoomed in (Sharp) picture or a microscope picture. It sounds like springtails which are beneficial - they don't harm the plant or the roots
@@plantwithroos i had sprintails before they dont have wings they just jump around just ordered some hypoaspis miles and put some mosquito bits few days ago hope it helps but im fighting something im not sure what it is

I have a epiphyllum orchid cactus.. I cut 3 stems and dried them for 5 days..I potted and it started growing spikes on the top of stem which I thought was roots.. it kind of looks like tooth picks but very small..they grew sticking out on each side.. it breaks off easy but you know its not completely gone.. and the plant started getting white or pale and thin its like something is sucking the life out of it.. but I don't see any pests... it started spreading to the 2nd one.. it started growing the little spikes on the top of that stem... I also have 3 little ones in a small 6 inch pot and it started growing the spikes on that too... Do you know what kind of pest that would be... I threw out the first one.. I can literally tear it very easily... there is definitely something going on.. I have never seen this before.. I've had the mother plant for about 15 years.. If this is not a pest could it be a disease... thank you
Hmm mine are doing that too, I also think it's roots? I'm still new to Epiphyllum so I have no idea what else it could be 🥺
I cut the top where the spikes were yesterday.. and bent the spike and it just cracks off into pieces.. I've seen different videos on pest and diseases for these type of plants and I never could see that problem... when I let someone else know about it.. they said maybe I planted it upside down.. but I know I didn't because I've done this many times. Can you please keep an eye on yours and see what happens and let me know if you see changes or find out what the problem is.. thank you for your help it is much appreciated@@plantwithroos
I just found out that they are aerial roots.. Aerial roots are natural for Epiphytes like orchid cactus, and usually nothing to worry about. Since they take in moisture and nutrients from the air, the roots develop to absorb humidity. They’re also used by the plant to attach to its surroundings.. but it could mean it’s not absorbing enough water from the soil.. thank you for the information on the pests
Ah that's so good to know thank you! That's what I thought but the moisture comment makes sense. They live at my sister in law now, I'll go take care of them next week 👌🏻
Now they are turning white and pale and dying I have 2 different pots with 2 different kinds and they all are dying.. it must be a fungus.. just keep an eye out for yours to see if yours do different... please let me if yours have any changes.. thank you@@plantwithroos

You know that you are a hardcore plant person when you just pick the mealy bugs off your plant with your bare fingers and squish the fuckers without blinking an eye hahaha
A tablespoon of dish soap in a pint of water mixed in a squirt bottle kills mealy bugs, aphids, thrips, and leaf hoppers.
That does work for certain pests but it does not treat the eggs and pupae of thrips that are hiding in the leaf tissue or soil (depending on the type of thrips).
