They went from Longyearbyen (Lyb) to Svea in the island Spitzbergen in Svalbard. There is no road between Lyb and Svea and the harbour is frozen in winter. In my time ther the used the Cat D11 to push coal to a flattbedfeader on Kapp Amsterdam when it was boat loading. The load was coal from the mighty Svea Nord mine and the boats where PanMax boats. Today they are tearing down Svea and bring the whole place "back to nature"

I never heard that it was any problem with the undercarrige on these Cat machines, they are realy something for themself. It is no road between Longyearbyen and Svea so in winter they used bulldozers the bring goods and equipment between Lyb and Svea ca 55 km. They used D7 and D8 for this missions, when it was heavy loads they used one dozer in front of a big sledge and one in the back, this was an impressive sight. The men who had the job were quite impressive also. The weather on Svalbard is usually real terrible, if you look you see that it is no vegetation and trees so the wind was out of this world. On the way down to Svea, last part of the trip you have to travel down a glazier where everything could happend and happend. I remember back in winter 2004 it was day after day with blizzard and in the end an Hägglunds BV206 arrived in Svea and that trip back to Longyearbyen was out of this world, anyway in the middle of nowhere av big sledge was left in the middle of "the road". The bulldozer crew had to abandon it due to the weather, so imagine when a D7 and D8 have to give up due to a blizzard.
