Lyrics:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing "Hallelujah"
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
#Hallelujah #LeonardCohen #Christmas - Hudba
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human.
It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence.
"Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability.
The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith.
The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human.
tl; dr
Amen!

Just lost my beautiful wife of forty years. Doesn't take much to make me cry these days. This is right up there.
I lost my mom at 97 two weeks ago. May G*D welcome them both to paradise.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Im so sorry for your loss I pray god will give you comfort during this hard time.
I'm so sorry for your loss, that's heartbreaking. Stay strong, my friend
So sorry, brother.
When you're depressed..put on some Cohen. He'll assure you, he'll walk with you. And, you'll make it through. That's what Cohen does. Still does. The Master lives.
Dang, this original version is not just some love song like all the covers, but a comment on how vain life feels. No matter what you do, life feels like it's full of mistakes and pitfalls. Your actions can be of the purest of meaning, but things just don't always pan out as you wish. We can all hope that things are better at the end. We can only say Hallelujah.
Wow- So well said! A profound observation.
This exactly, brother. There is a lot of deep meaning in this song, and you nailed it.
I couldn't have said it any better 👌
Yes, I had to search for the original version who wrote it who first recorded it and the lyrics I don’t understand how the lyrics got changed throughout the years with people covering this song and making it not pure anymore. I was so confused when I heard this for the first time I didn’t know if it was supposed to be Like a love song pertaining to intimacy but now I’ve heard the original version. I think all covers of any song should be done with original lyrics of a song. This song is amazing.
I think you’ve helped me realize why I truly love this song.
This version is the best. It's not overly dramatic or optimistic sounding, like some covers. It's sound is the perfect blend of defeated and hopeful.
Avery Huelsbeck true....but the master has it right
Sarcasm
Avery Huelsbeck Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many different hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very different intents or tones, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting joyous" depending on the performer.

My condolences, Nicole. I believe your grandmother took this song and your love with her.
So many people like the covers better, and don't get me wrong, the covers are beautiful, but for some reason, I just feel this song more when I'm listening to the original. Cohen's voice... it just fits the raw emotion to this song. It's not dressed up, it's not over-dramatic, its real. I can't describe it any other way. It's just so beautiful, really.
+Heather DuMars The original is the best. End of story
+Heather DuMars You nailed it perfectly.

you are so right and he is a poet so it s best he sings from his experience and expression I was trying to find the Beat poets from the 60's they were called the Beatniks I want to see what they have to say !!peace !!!
The chorus in Cohen's version is amazing.
❤❤🔥
The chorus in this version was not made of professional singers, to make it sound more like people singing along, and not a polished choir. It was made of the band members, the producer, the producer's ex-wife, and a few others. It fits this version perfectly, I think.
Well it’s the original not a version.

This will always be my favorite version. Other singers have greater range but none have Cohen's broken voice or his poet's touch. Doesn't matter what performer you appreciate as long as you are listening to this masterpiece. Be as well as you can be and enjoy your life.
Perfectly stated. I agree. 😊
So will mine... forever !!!
I agree. Cohen was a huge influence on me as a young musician. I all but wore out his album learning the songs back in 1968-69. His work is timeless and reaches right into your heart.

God, I have always loved this song. It is so beautiful.
Mary Nagle This is the first song I hear every morning when I get up. It always reminds me to appreciate the good things and to not worry about the bad things each day. It always filled my heart with joy. Right now, it is bittersweet - but I'm sure it will return to being simply joyous and inspirational again!! :)
Cohen often said that songwriting is a difficult process for him. The only song The Future, he said, has been rewritten dozens of times. In an interview, Cohen told the following story:
A few years ago, Bob Dylan and I drank coffee in Paris. At that time, he performed the song Hallelujah at his concerts and asked me how long it took to write it. I said: "Two years, almost entirely." He was shocked. Then we started talking about his song I And I and I asked: “How much time did you spend writing it?” He said: “Almost 15 minutes”. I almost fell off the chair. And the funny thing is that I lied. In fact, the Hallelujah took almost 5 years. Of course, and he lied. It probably took him about ten minutes.
A very nice story, thanks.
What a great story! Thank you for sharing that!
I can't remember any of Bob's songs.
The melodies are hardly catchy, except something about "shelter from the storm".
Still even if less "researched" than Cohen he wrote some excellent timeless songs, blowing in the wind is one that means something different to me every year even if it may have taken him 5 hours
Most catchy songs (or at least the bulk of their melodies) are made pretty quickly.
yesterday was my father's funeral, my friends played this song on wind instruments (clarinet, trumpet, tuba, saxophone) for the last farewell, it was special and festive, dad must have laughed when he heard the first bars, he loved Leonard Cohen very much....🤍🙏🏻🤍
Im here because my 4 y/o loves this song. I’ve sang it to him since he was in the womb
Leonard Cohen is an international treasure of a musician, who goes on forever. His intelligence, passion, wisdom and creativity go into each song. He doesn't just sing, he communicates deep feelings and ideas, that touch our souls. Leonard Cohen is timeless and beautiful!
He is a one of a kind, there is no doubt. He tapped into some sort of supernatural force while writing his songs.

I am not a religious person at all but there's something amazing about this song..
It's not really a religious song. Just has religious references.
@@psychedeliac Its a very Jewish song. Defining that as “religious” or not depends on a distinction that does not exist in Judaism. To me this is about experiencing God’s presence, shekinah, in the act of sex, which is a theme that goes back to Solomon and the Song of Songs, and offering praise to the Sovereign of the Universe for that experience of love and joy even when it comes with pain.

@@blackadamrockzzz4439 Nope, Leonard Cohen was one of ours! As the last name would suggest - "Cohen" comes from the Hebrew word for priest, "Kohen," used to refer to the Priests of the First and Second Temples from the Tribe of Levi. He was probable one of the greatest poets for me to ever come across.
Back when I was in high-school I was part of the school-choir. I was one of three guys in a choir consisting at times of up to 40 girls.
For one event we prepared Hallelujah and somehow I was chosen to sing the last verse. For rehearsals we always had a 'female-version' and I only knew the version from, if I'm not mistaken, Jeff Buckley. The concert came, the girls beautifully sang their solos and I too hummed/growled my verse. We left the stage, as I saw an elderly man who followed me with his shining eyes, we passed the rows of chairs and he slightly lifted his arm as if to reach for my hands. I stopped and he simply put his hands around mine and thanked me. I was so shocked that I did not reply anything. I compared myself to the angelic voices of the girls and could not comprehend how/why he was so moved by my part. Is was accosted multiple times that evening, mostly by elderly people; so I mentioned it to my parents. And my mom told me that it might be because I kinda sound like Leonard Cohen when I sing. I looked his version up when I we got home and yeah... I surely don't want to compare me with Leonard Cohen... laughable :D but whenever I hear this version; especially the last verse, I think of that old man's shining eyes and am quietly so very proud that my voice could re-ignite a very old and deep emotion in that man; whatever it was...
yeah, that totally happenned

so sad most versions don’t include it
This is the best version. It sneers, it cuts, it’s raw and brutal and exactly what the lyrics demand.
There’s nothing pretty or soaring here; it’s mean and petty and vicious.
Yeah. Exactly. It's a very cynical and raw song.
I found it bittersweet and even soaring; turns pain into something better.
I think some other versions do justice enough, but I feel like the point is missed when gorgeous people with beautiful voices blast it out of the water, flexing their chops, making a grand and spectacular show of it.
The song isn’t itself unless it’s broken, and that’s what makes it so tragic. There’s something so beautiful about it, and it’s trying its damned best to bring it out. But if it’s ever achieved, the song is lost.
Happy 80th Birthday, Leonard Cohen!

I’m an atheist but I have always thought of this as one of the most beautiful modern songs, and one of my favorites to listen to
Also my favorite progression to improvise to, it always brings some emotion out
As another Atheist (named Alex) Cohen talked about the song as his "desire to affirm [his] faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm and emotion"
Faith in a God or Gods is not a prerequisite for having some kind of faith, and religious or not I think Leonard sings from the heart about a broad love and devotion towards existence itself, and as an Atheist who believes this existence, both holy and broken in its own way, is all we have. I kno0w this reply is at least a year late but I hope you have a great day, maybe now accompanied by some Cohen.

@Costa Zambaras Or, you know, some people just prefer the original over the cover because it's perfectly fine to have opinions and you don't have to gate keep just because you're self conscious about your own taste. If you like the Buckley version better, good on you, it's very good. I like it too, but I prefer the original for just as legitimate reasons. That doesn't make me or anyone else with that opinion "edgy" or "non conformist"

The world has lost a true lyrical legend. Thankfully we will always have his music to remind us
Those of us who grew up in the 1960's thought the song Leonard Cohen would be remembered for would be "Suzanne," not this one which he didn't write until the 1980's. But this is the Cohen masterpiece. and as good as some of the covers are (particularly Jeff Buckley's and k. d. lang's), Cohen is the winner and still champion on this song.
It reflects the struggle Man has with it's relationship with Love, God,each other and individual identity and the meaning and purpose of life. Artfully and soulfully done.

Am I the only one who likes Cohen's original version more than any cover? In my opinion, Cohen sings it so naturally and his voice is really soothing.
I like it better too Geoff. He is the original. He is the poet, the writer, the man with the passion to have came up with the song. the other version is actauly quite good but this man was the man. This song has some kind of hypnotic effect, I cannot stop listening to it.
😀😍❤🔥
Just touch the pause button
Cohen is hypnotic, his voice, his lyrics ...
@@martinguillermo8023 😄
Yes, I totally agree! I've been singing it to myself for the past three days and I can't stop. Amazing how a song touches one, eh?
Slava Bogu našem Isusu Hristu Spasitelju!!!🙏
THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL!! The word HALLELUJAH is so much more in pain and desperation. It makes me want to cry with meaning!
R.I.P Leonard Cohen
I'm pushing sixty and Cohen is the only singer I've cried for when I heard they died. Weird part is I never realized I was that big a fan
Maybe 'cause it was right on the heels of Lemmy dying and that was just too much
Me too
A bit but still
do you know any songs that have this type of instrumental or just songs like it in general?
I found this version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen enchanting.❤
There’s more to this song than just Hallelujah. A lot more. Once you hear it, and I mean really hear it, you can never unhear it.
Can you please elaborate on your comment?
@@owensuperbot232 This song is really about sex rather than God.
@@victorpurificacao2855so many ppl writing stuff about god im like hes talking about sex so good he was saying hallelujah 😂
The original and the best version
TEA
nope
That’s subjective
Waluigi:
I prefer this version the most, because I feel his voice contains so much emotion. To each his/her own, but this is my favourite.
I think Jeff's has more emotion.
No, hes quite monotone
More emotion that Jeff Buckley’s? Really?
Kd lange is very good
anyway, Leonard, thanks for capturing the entire human condition in one song.
I heard hallelujah at my brother's funeral last Wednesday. I dedicate this in memory of Patrick Richards my brother
Words are just words. Inadequate to those who are left when someone passes on to the next level. Even so, I'm sorry for your loss of your brother.
This is going to sound dumb. I mean no insult to you or his memory. Forgive my forwardness.
I had a close friend that died. Before we knew about his terminal illness, we were watching "Ghost Hunters" on tv, and not being certain of the truth or fiction of it, made a deal that which ever one of us died first, we would let the other know if there was an afterlife without scaring the shit out of each other.
The episode was when they used a flashlight to communicate with a ghost. The ghost revealed itself by turning the flashlight on in response to their questioning it.
I never thought about it once after that day. Maybe 1 year later he was diagnosed with lung cancer. I didn't remember our deal during his decline or after he died.
About a month after he died, I was at a friend's place and we were talking about our good memories with him near his end. How positive he was.
You know those rubber balls you bounce really hard on the ground and they light up red and blue flashing colors for a few seconds, then shut off, until they are bounced again?
My friend had one of those that fit on the end of a pencil.
She was just holding it while we were talking about him, hadn't bounced it or even moved it...
And it started flashing. Ok. Little blown away but, whatever, right?
Next day another friend is over, and first friend is telling him about what happened the day before, and it starts flashing just sitting there on the table.
After that second time, I'm thinking about it later, and I remember our deal we made. I thanked him out loud and cried a little and told him I loved him.
Now it's maybe a month later, or less, still winter. (Died in February)
I'm sitting in a garage with another mutual friend of ours that's kind of a full of shit person, but we like him anyway, and the two of them had as good of a connection as one can have with his type of human. We are talking about him, and this wooden wind chime thats hanging above his head just falls off where it's hanging and lands on his head. We laugh about it and say hello.
A couple weeks later I'm in the same garage and I blow the fuse to the garage. In pitch black darkness, one of those bouncy light up balls that's sitting in the bench amongst the clutter, starts flashing. All by itself. Nothing touched it.
I say hey man, and tell him he better move on and go into the light and have a good afterlife, and say hello to another friend of mine and my dog. He knew and loved my dog.
And that is all.
I swear to you that all of that is true. You are a complete stranger. We will never meet. It took a long time for me to write this out one letter at a time on my phone. There is nothing in it for me to lie to you.
When I read your dedication, I had no intention of writing anything beyond "I'm sorry for your loss".
I tell you all of this because words of condolence are inadequate. But knowing there really is an afterlife... KNOWING it for sure, and that you WILL see each other again, can help you through any emotional pain you may be feeling.
I don't know what your religion is, if any, or what your beliefs are, but I know what our friends, his and mine, experienced first hand with 3 separate objects.
I hope this helps you through it.
Hallelujah. Indeed.
May he live forever in this song🙏

May God bless you and your brother.
Rest in Peace Patrick.
Enough of this trailer comment.
Cann't we just say that this song is one of the best song we've ever heard?
I love this song
these are christian people so dont expect a thing from them ....they are thankless
I'm Muslim , yet I think this song is amazing ......
Might be my favourite song of All-time
This version of the song too.
@@loyallall wtf r u on about?? How high r u?
This song brings memories of my ex-wife, I endured years of her dual diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and bipolar-1 combined with alcoholism. This song touches all the points of the mental fight within my heart and head before I called it quits. I cry unconsolably every time I hear it. All my efforts to get her help were met with reversed blame, to the point of having to end the relationship with the only one who could understand me. I'm left to be alone until I die. Thanks for reading.
❤
I’ll probably never fully understand this kind of struggle as I’m only 20. But, I just hope you tried to give it your all for her
Be strong! Life is a constant struggle and there is much ahead of you! There are so many people to meet and love and so many simple experiences that give joy and that are worth living! I hope you put all the effort you put in saving your past relationship to live your life to the fullest!
Sometimes we are experiencing living difficult circumstances. It is a fact that evev the Creator of the univers has t be able to enjoy a sharing, a good relation, in return of His investing of Love in every cm3 of the cosmos. HE IS WAITING (ACTIVELY BUSY) FOR THE MATURITY OF Humankind, as the nature (its said in the Bible) is yearning for true masters... Let we awoke that all our efforts to give, to live joyfully, respectingoursrlf and others, will uplift Even the brokenheart of God himself.! His ideal is in our hands as humans are responsible of the fall..... Let's be sensitive to His love and Presence. And let's return our Precious Love to Him so He can relax and feel Joy.!
Hello Tim, may you find comfort in the fact the David, in spite having a broken Hallelujah has left much comfort for us in his inspirational Psalms.
Nobody will be better than he was. All the fuss about the covers, and sure, they were ok. Cohen was the original and he was the master of his craft
This song is an absolute classic and this is the best version.
+Elaine Bailey YES YES YES YES....................................................
+Elaine Bailey I totally agree...
This song is currently 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. Leonard Cohen never had a song on the Hot 100, until now.
Jaden Just he didn't need to be on the top of anything genius is beyond that ..
You've never heard of "Suzanne" have you?
That's kinda sad since he was such a blessing to this world
Lord Succubus, Lord Xenu's Second in Command The irony is that of the hundreds of songs he wrote this is one of the weakest.
@@mikewilliams258 that's saying something if his weakest song can still draw such emotion from us. Hat off to him.
This lirycs makes me cry always i'm having a hard struggle now but i know that the only Savior is Jesus.
My music teacher told me to try and listen and learn this. I spent 99% of the time just vibin to this.
A poet.
You will find no words of wisdom down here. Just sit back and listen.
This song is just F-ing incredible. I believe this song is about the trials and tribulations of a man who is deeply in love with a woman.
Has been played at my dad's funeral a few weeks ago.
I cannot listen to the song without starting to cry. 😢
God I miss you.
He’s resting well now, don’t stop pushing in life my friend, it’s a constant pursuit that’s ever moving 🙏
Thoughts and prayers to you Penumbra97. May you find peace and solace in your memories of your dad.
the song is actually about sex, physically fucking and losing one's faith in God ; it is NOT a religious hymn
This song being the original is so much better than any rendition. It’s not supposed to be this happy springy upbeat song, it’s supposed to be mellow, and lost and sad and is portrayed perfectly by Leonard Cohen, the writer
One of the greatest songs of all time. Especially in the version from Cohen, which I personally prefer over the other versions.
Same.
Biased, because I'm a huge Cohen fan, but still consider this the best version (including the choice of verses). Jennifer Warnes' backing vocals give me chills, too.

How many versions are there?
Like a delicate soap bubble, anything could have popped this recording. The bass is oddly prominent in the mix, but is perfectly matched with the spoken word. Correspondingly, the keys are quiet but equally perfect. The guitar is a garnish. The vocal stylings are so striking, spoken to you. The choir is schmaltzy, but exactly the proper amount of schmaltz.
This recording is maypole around which we all dance. The pole stays the same, we perceive it differently as the dance progresses.
Thanks for sharing.
How can anyone not like this song-bereft of humanity??
The Snyder Cut trailer brought me here.

I thought i will be the first ... But j was wrong
Ahh I see your a man of culture as well

Leonard Cohen is a great songwriter/poet. This song (in his voice) has a haunting quality about it the draws us in to it's emotion. There have been MANY versions of this song, another really great Canadian (Yes, Cohen was CANADIAN) who did a great version, was K.D. Lang.....She has the voice and does emote, but it doesn't have the same haunting quality that Mr. Cohen's original version does. He really is a lyrical genius....
+Christine Larocque : Je suis tout à fait d'accord. You could not have said it better.
Damn straight! Very few songs give me that real physical sense of emotion right in my gut like this one does. If you haven't heard the Jeff Buckley version, you should check it out. The yearning you hear in his guitar playing is outstanding.
+Christine I Larocque
Yes, i agree. This version is haunting and super and i like the KD lang version also.
You want hauntingly beautiful Cohen? I invite you to partake in "Dance Me to the End of Love" and let yourself bathe in the story of love as only Leonard Cohen can deliver. Kisses, Michele
Michele Fox yessss.... I've heard both and just love.
