      Man the children are in chat today lol. Watched the video while typing out my comment then started to scroll the comments & it hurt my optimism for the outlook of the hobby even more. Jeebus it's obnoxious, maybe it's those pushing this fraud message trying to silence those speaking against it... Seem like the types to be Hypebeast Supremes & know where to buy bots or rent opinions? Anyways, I'm just hoping these illogic & irrational opinions I read (only got thru a few before feeling need to comment again) aren't the real collectors who participate in the hobby regularly. Since I've started selling on eBay back in June it wouldn't surprise me if it was the Whatnot, Backdoor Breaks, StarStock, Sneakers, Lorcana hocking crowd though tbh bc you just ya run across them way too often..... & my Block list gets longer & longer lol. @TylerShort  Před 5 měsíci +5

      So if I have two cards, a clean Wemby base prizm and a second one that I decide to rip in half and crumble the two pieces in my hand...let's say hypothetically, it is possible to "restore" the crumbled/ripped in half Wemby to perfect condition and both cards grade a 10. Which one would you choose, and would you want to know that your perfect 10 had been through so much trauma.

    • @codacollectibles
      @codacollectibles Před 5 měsíci +6

      @@TylerShort Two key points to consider, altering VS restoration.
      Altering (in any genre of collecting) refers to the addition, or subtraction of material from the collectible item. Altering devalues the collectible item, bc it is no longer in what is accepted to be its original state. Altered items have been manipulated in some fashion to make the item appear to be better (or, in the example you gave, worse) than their original state.
      Altering is bad, no matter which genre of collecting you subscribe to.

    • @codacollectibles
      @codacollectibles Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@TylerShort Restoration/conservation is different.
      Its approach is to give the collectible item the best possible presentation it can have, without physically altering it in any way. When doing restoration/conservation, there's always a risk of damage. Damage is an unintentional alteration. If damage occurs, that collectible item should be noted as having been altered unintentionally.
      Restoration/conservation is generally good, as long as certain guidelines are followed, and no altering takes place.

    • @codacollectibles
      @codacollectibles Před 5 měsíci +2

      @@TylerShort In our hobby, card cleaning can go in either direction. There are those who 100% care about the collectible item and use restoration/conservation methods correctly to ensure the item's presentation and longevity. On the flip side, there are those who use it in an attempt to intentionally alter cards, in bad faith, to fool other collectors for profitability reasons. This latter group is exactly the people you described in your video, and IMO they should be banned from participating in the hobby.
      No argument with you on the T-Law and other mass-produced modern card abominations.

So no need to crack and resubmit to try to get a better grade. Thats huge.There was a guy who submitted a PSA 6 to tag and it came back a 9. Why the shock at what’s happening in this industry? Classic scenario where one side (i.e., the grading companies) have unilateral control of grading and the resulting valuation of cards. What’s really ridiculous is the ability to grade a card with impunity, no reasons provided, and then on top, drive a market that pays x for a 10, and exponentially less for anything below that. When the model unfairly favors one party, bad behavior is inevitable because it’s about money at the end of the day (not those that are collectors for collecting sake only). If you’re going to set the market pricing and tell everyone that the majority of their cards are worthless, then expect the expected. I don’t mind the strict grading at 10 and keeping that category for the best of the best, but let’s lighten up a bit on the value of 8’s and 9’s and give collectors and investors the chance to do business at these levels. All live happily ever after…

    I’ve been saying for years that the GemMint grade has ruined the hobby. The fact that the perception of modern cars is PSA 10 or bust is a prime example why this nonsense goes on. Most of us can’t tell the difference between a PSA 9 or 10 yet the 10 sells for so much more? Buying a PSA 10 is probably the biggest scam in the hobby. If they just graded most modern cards as Mint, then it eliminate people cleaning their cards.

    What’s the big deal really? Cleaning a card should be the last thing anyone should have an issue with. If a card has been damaged in some way, but there’s a way that damage can be repaired, then it should be repaired. If PSA has an issue with it, simply grade the card as normal, give the grade it deserves, and add to the label “repaired”. May affect the value some, but I doubt there would be a huge difference between a “PSA 10” and a
    “PSA 10 Repaired”. If the end result is the same, the manner and materials someone chooses to clean, or restore a card with shouldn’t matter in any way whatsoever. If you use water to clean a card, and your neighbor uses furniture polish to clean his cards, and I use kerosene to clean my cards, what difference does any of that matter as long as the card is clean and not damaged? If a person is able to remove creases in a card by soaking it in water, what difference does it make as long as the creases were able to be repaired? PSA saw the just how huge the market is for these products, and now want to run these small businesses away, so that they can release their own line of cleaning kits licensed through PSA only

    Thanks for coming out and saying how you really feel on this topic Tyler. As you mention, the unfortunately reality of most "hobby" content on CZcams nowadays (or really most social media platforms) is people who joined in 2020/21 and have very little knowledge of the history of the hobby. They exhibit little to no concern for integrity as well. I don't care about PSA 10s of anything unless it's a PC player and that's the only card out there, or it's a $10 card lol. However, if I was buying PSA 10's i'd certainly want to know if it was touched by these card doctors since to me it would be tainted goods at that point.
    PSA needs to update their no grade definitions and be very clear about what they deem altered when it comes to modern cards. This lawyer speak from Ryan Hoge is better than staying silent but it's not enough IMO.

If PSA were able to grade things consistently and not have 7s and 8s get cracked and resubmitted for a 10, it wouldn't happen nearly as often. It's the inherent problem with a human grading cards. Well if there wasn’t so much value in grading, cleaning or altering cards wouldn’t be an issue. How far do we go? Is simply wiping down a card with a micro fiber cloth to remove dust and potential finger prints altering a card? Cause by definition it should be. I think we should just let hobbyists, investors, or collectors do as they please. If these grading companies don’t have the technology to 100% determine if a card as been altered then it shouldn’t matter. Cause whatever your preference is in the hobby dollar signs is what matters most for people.

Brent was ahead of his time, but Kurt is right place-right time. PSA hits us with upcharges and we just have to suck it up and pay it. Well, now this is our way of fighting back against those upcharges and getting better grades. Nat Turner bitched for years about the upcharges, then buys PSA and instead of getting rid of the crap up charges since he’s “one of us” (which he’s not one of us), he keeps jamming us. PSA needs to figure out how to spot the wax on-wax off or just keep slabbing the crap cards and shut up……expect more shoutouts to Kurt and his vasoline rubbing cream for better grades because people buy the grade, not the card……

    • @mc386106
      @mc386106 Před 5 měsíci

      @@TylerShort It's like waxing a car to remove surface scratches. The scratches aren't going away, but what the wax can do is fill in near the surface where the scratch is to make it appear as if it's not there. By doing so, you don't actually completely fix the scratch, but you fill in the top part so it appears to be one smooth surface. It takes on the color around it, not literally but in appearance, because it's filling in such a small amount of space. With the way modern cards are produced, especially chrome cards, that is why waxing can work so well. Scratches that aren't too deep are easy to cover up. It's not gloss being removed. Instead, it's filling in what essentially is a hole when you scratch something.

    • @mc386106
      @mc386106 Před 5 měsíci

      On that note, it's the way this works that should be the reason wax might be disfavored in the hobby. Wax puts gloss over the scratch. However, if you do it and the wax wears off, as it likely will in time, the scratches that were covered up will reappear. So, then the card that was a 10 now looks like an 8 or worse. How long the process of wax wearing off takes is a big question here. In terms of long-term effects, it's actually the biggest in my eyes. If a good wax could guarantee the wax won't fade and allow scratches to reappear, that would be one where now it's not as big a deal because it will always look gem. However, if the wax fades while sitting in the PSA holder, that's going to create some very weird questions.
