2021 Mercedes-Benz S580 | Missing Just One Crucial Element

  • During the pandemic drivers engaged in riskier behaviors resulting in the highest traffic fatality rate in 15 years. Extreme speeding, drugs and alcohol, not to mention our society’s out-of-control incivility problem were all contributing factors. And here’s the really bad news: post-lockdown things aren’t getting much better. So why on earth would I start my new S-Class review on such a downer? Well, because cars like this can do an amazing job of ameliorating most of that frantic behavior we’re assaulted by each time we go out for a drive nowadays. And what Mercedes has done here is crafted a luxury car for modern times where driving takes a back seat to feeling safe, secure and oh so spoiled.

Steve, Thanks for taking the time to put a spotlight on the appalling carnage we are seeing today on our roadways. For all their vastly improved safety features, modern cars have far too much HP being controlled by far too little driving IQ. The results of this growing imbalance are increasingly tragic.

@@stevehammes I will say thanks again. I got my license in 1980, in those days typical commuter cars had between 80 - 120 hp. Many V8s made less than 150 hp. Today an average family car making its debut with anything less than 200 hp is ridiculed. Where is the evidence drivers can handle that kind of increase? To the contrary, objective data shows the opposite to be true. We have not even touched upon the debilitating effects of distraction from the plethora of modern communication devices that did not exist in the quite recent past. There is much work to be done and people with influence need to use it .

This is a really thorough review and the details are well considered. It's a shame Mercedes thinks luxury is putting yet another motor on something that doesn't need it. Motorized seat belts arrived when I was a kid and the modern equivalency of that idea is the motorized door handle. Ideas like these should never have made it out of committee. It's wasteful, superfluous and has nothing to do with the mission of the car.

  • @ourrollercoasterride8341

Thank you for your review...we have this car and have nothing but issues from the day I purchased it. As much as I give credit the Mercedes to help in fix the issues or bugs due to the newness, our car's brakes failed in a low speed situation and the car turned off in the middle of grid lock traffic. Sensors did not activate nor did brake assist. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. There is more but let's just say nightmare. Yes, this car is beautiful as described but be cautious.

The S580 suspension on New York city pot holes is terrible, behaves like a landmine hit it each time the tires plunge into one. The BMW 750xDrive does a much better job in this area. If the Bimmer's brakes weren't so aggressive, jerking at every stop, I would pick it over the S580.

The taillights look like the 2013-2018 Lexus LS460. I don’t think the interior of this car ages gracefully with all those piano gloss surfaces. Imagine if you put a two year old kid in it. Also, usually older people drive S class, and I don’t think they care for all that tech. 2014-2016 S class model years seem to be the best ones.

I feel the answer to that is European manufactures build driver cars if you notice Porsche , bmw , Audi all approach it the same it’s the American manufacturers that are building cars for lazy people who can’t afford a chauffeur, wouldn’t be caught riding a bus and simply too occupied to focus on driving. I don’t think Mercedes Benz missed it I think that made a conscious calculation about it with safety slightly ahead of technology whereas Cadillac places it the other way around technology and gadgets before safety with tech edging out safety.

You don’t understand, MB has the level 3 semi autonomous drive like any other car including the Tesla. But Tesla calls it an autopilot and people think they can take their hands off. Do you remember years ago a man in his 40’s was playing a video game for over 30 minutes because there was no safety built in like in the MB. Well you know he was decapitated when his car did not recognize an 18 wheeler. Or what about the 2 60 year old male who let their car drive them and they died because no one was in the drivers seat and both died due to the fire.
It’s reporters like you who amplify cars like the Tesla that they are autonomous and yes, take your hands off the steering wheel, while the Germans have self driving cars, but call it semi autonomous due to regulations!
