MHMD [06] The 4 References to Muhammad in the QUR'AN are ALL about JESUS!

  • We are back again, but still ascertaining what the term "Muhammad" is, or who it belongs to, and are now turning our attention to the Qur'an itself to try to find out.
Yet, here is the problem, the word "Muhammad" in Arabic (MHMD) is only found 4 times in the Qur'an. So if this is the name for the prophet of Islam, of whom this book should be all about, that is embarrassing.
In comparison, the name of the prophet Moses is referred to 136 times, while Abraham is found 79 times, and even the insignificant Egyptian Pharaoh's name is written 74 times, while the references to Jesus in his many different forms can be found between 25 to 93 times!
If Muhammad is so important to Islam and to the Qur'an, than why are there so few references to him. What is even worse, what if these 4 references are not to the Muslim prophet Muhammad at all, but to someone else?
As we have noted in the previous episodes in this series on Muhammad, the four letters 'MHMD' was a title long before it became a name for a man, or even a prophet.
That title could mean "The Praised One", or "Altogether Lovely", or "The Anointed One", or even "The "Messiah". And by the 7th century that title often was used when referring to Jesus Christ, at least by Christians who spoke Arabic.
So, understanding that it was a title when the Qur'an was being created, let's then take a look at the 4 references to Muhammad in the Qur'an and see if this title fits Muhammad, the prophet from Arabia, or the Christ Jesus from Galilee.
Mel cautions at the beginning of this episode that when we look at this title in the 7th century, we need to be aware that it could be attributed to either Jesus, or even to a Jewish exilarch (i.e. Nehemiah ben Hushiel who lived in Jerusalem) who was viewed as a Messianic figure at that time.
With that caution out of the way, let's now turn our interest to these 4 verses in the Qur'an which state the word "Muhammad":
Surah 47:2 - "As for those who believe, do good, and have faith in what has been revealed to Muḥammad-which is the truth from their Lord-He will absolve them of their sins and improve their condition."
This verse is all about a 'Muhammad' who can forgive sins, which the Muslim Muhammad cannot, but Jesus can (see Matthew 4:17 and Mark 2:10), proving that this could only be about Jesus 'The praised one'.
Surah 48:29 - "Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are firm with the disbelievers and compassionate with one another. You see them bowing and prostrating in prayer, seeking Allah’s bounty and pleasure. The sign ˹of brightness can be seen˺ on their faces from the trace of prostrating ˹in prayer˺. This is their description in the Torah. And their parable in the Gospel is that of a seed that sprouts its ˹tiny˺ branches, making it strong..."
This verse points to a 'Muhammad' whose followers follow the Torah and the Gospels, which are likely Christians. It then refers to the parable of the sowers, one of Jesus' teachings.
Surah 33:40 - "Muḥammad was not the father of any of your men, but is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. And Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things."
Mel points out that this verse in Arabic is in the past tense, so that it should read "Muhammad WAS not the father of any of your men", referring to a former 'Muhammad', or 'Praised One'; therefore it could not be talking about the Arab Muhammad of the time of the Qur'an.
It also makes more sense with Jesus, who never married, so could not be the "father of any of your men". Furthermore, he is the "seal", or the last of the prophetic line, since he didn't marry and have any progeny. Thus, it fits Jesus better than the Islamic Muhammad.
Surah 3:144 - "Muḥammad is no more than a messenger; other messengers have gone before him. If he were to die or to be killed, would you regress into disbelief?"
This again makes more sense with Jesus, as it fits almost word-for-word a previous Surah 5:75, where the exact same statement is made of Isa, the Messiah, saying "The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him". So the
persons in both Surah 3:144 and Surah 5:75 are Jesus.
Furthermore, the reference to dying and being killed also fits with Jesus better than with the Muhammad of Islam, who wasn't killed.
So, in all four examples where the term 'Muhammad' is found in the Arabic of the Qur'an, rather than immediately imposing the later Islamic Traditional narrative onto these verses, which is known as 'eisegesis', its better to read them in the context of that time and place, ascertaining what the author of these verses intended, which is known as 'exegesis'. When we do that these 4 verses clearly suggest that the better candidate for them turns out to be the Jesus of Jerusalem, and not the Muhammad of Mecca.

Umar had the dome added onto the stolen Catholic Church and converted that one and the smaller Catholic Church into the two Temple Mount mosques. It actually does not make sense if they didn't exist. Daniel foretold these antichrists. Almost all of Arabia was Catholic and only by an antichrist cult rising out of the polytheist minority can account for anything at all.

As-salamu alaykum bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim. By the way, I am a Muslim who believes in the Bible that includes the death, resurrection, and divinity of Isa al-Masih.
'And how [is] Muhammad only a messenger, [if] the messengers have passed away before him? So [what] if he died or had been slain, ye will turn back on your heels? He who turneth back on his heels doth no hurt to Allah, and Allah will reward the thankful.' - Surah 3:144
This is a referrance to Muhammad (or Machmad) is a prophetic name of the living temple of the body of al-Masih as seen in Isaiah 53:10, Ezekiel 24:21, Song of Songs 5:16, & John 2:21.
'Yet it pleased al-Rabb to bruise him [ie. Muhammad]; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of al-Rabb shall prosper in his hand.' - Isaiah 53:10
'Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith al-Rabb Allah; Behold, I will profane my sanctuary (or my Holy-One), the boast of your strength, Muhammad before your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons and your daughters whom ye have left shall fall by the sword.' - Ezekiel 24:21
'But he spake of the temple of his body.' - John 2:21
'How [is] al-Masih ibn Mariam only a messenger, [if] the messengers have passed away before him? Yet his mother is truthful. They both used to eat the food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.' - Surah 5:75
Both Isa al-Masih, who is the incarnation of Logos, and his mother, who was overshadowed by Sophia, were exalted after their deaths, as Isa is seated beside Allah atop His throne while Mariam was assumed into Jannah (ie. Eden or Paradise).
      Muhammad is al-Masih ibn Mariam.

The Muhammad of Islam in the Quran could be different from the one in the Hadith. Two tentative possibilities
1.What's coming later in this series is that Mhmd - in the contemporary layer, ie what the biblicist material was being used for - is not a "the" but a chain of mhmds. If there is more than one mhmd it makes less sense to say "the" mhmd.
      2. The title comes first, and it then becomes how we name the figure of the mhmd. It is why we typically say Jesus Christ - Christ is equivalent as a messianic title to mhmd - not Jesus "the" Christ.

I like solution 2 and I have discussed something similar to this with leading experts in the field.
Look at how the Pharaoh in sura 12 is titled Al Hakam, but the mosaic Pharaoh is named Pharoah/Fira’aun so many times in the Quran without the definite particle Al.
I would love to hear more from you about option 2.
Regarding the Quranic prophet simply named the prophet/ al naby my hypothesis is that he was an arabian prophet but not etnically arabian. Rather he was of syriac etnicity, could speak arabic fluently and became arab through marriage with different women from christian arab tribes.
Regarding the christology of the Quran you and Jay often mix up arianism with dynamical monarchianism. See Sam Tidenman’s lecture on the development of the trinity.
There are two hypotheses within the Inarah School regarding the christology of the Quranic authors and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Luling hypothesis= quranic christology is dynamical monarchinist
Luxemburg hypothesis= quranic christology is trinitarian or moderate arian ( similar to Sankt Ephraims christology).

The name “MUHAMMAD” had already existed during the time of ADAM. So, it should be NO surprise at all if the name "Muhammad" or MHMD can be found long before he was born. Ever prophet, beginning from ADAM up to the time of JESUS, had made a Covenant with Allah SWT that they should support Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in his mission and announce to the people about his coming. It means that the name "MUHAMMAD" had been already announced to the people since the time of Adam, him being the first man and the first prophet. Therefore, it is no doubt that the name "MUHAMMAD" had already existed long before his birth. However, the only recorded fulfillment of that covenant is the one made by Prophet jESUs (pbuh).

The name “MUHAMMAD” had already existed during the time of ADAM. So, it should be NO surprise at all if the name "Muhammad" or MHMD can be found long before he was born. Every prophet, beginning from ADAM up to the time of JESUS, had made a Covenant with Allah SWT that they should support Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in his mission and announce to the people about his coming.

I think that the "seal of the prophets" (Daniel 9:24) was John the Baptist who was the final prophet of the covenant of Sinai/Moses, we remember that fake jewish prophet Mani also called himself the "seal of the prophets.
The "seal of the prophets" was contentious to the jews (as was Messiah Jesus Christ) as it signed the termination of their relationship with God, priesthood, and kingdom in ~33 AD.
So the jews would "pick" many false prophets and false messiahs from this point forwards.
EG, fake jewish messiah, Menahem Schneerson of Ukraine, said that ANYONE could be the Christ, and that the rabbis had the "special" role of pointing out the messiah to the jews.
The "orthodox" (heterodox?) jews said that there was no "messiah", but it was a "messianic age", and gave themselves the authority to nominate any "prophet of God" or "messiah of God" that they desired.
(can you imagine what would happen if a "faithful" jew actually read the Bible, understood it, and realized that the entire superstructure of judaism is a fraud and a human fabrication?)
Love your work - let's keep contending for the faith once received and expose the darkness with the truth and the glory of God!

47:2. And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.
Straight shirk? Where is the shirk you are talking about in the above verses? Verse 47:2 is speaking about believing in what is sent to Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh), and that is the Qur'an. It is the truth from Allah SWT. If you believe in it, Allah SWT will remove from you your misdeeds. In other words, He will forgive your sins. Not sure one could easily fit Surah 48.29 to Jesus. As in "firm on the disbelievers" would not be right, and the followers "compassionate among themselves" would not be right. As in you might get those in a sect or clique, and it might indeed have good aims, and so maybe naturally distanced from people who don't buy into the group beliefs. Jesus spoke out in blunt fashion especially against the proud and self-righteous, but often also helping the weaker ones who were maybe stuck in serious sins. Jesus also taught his disciples to even love their enemies, so their compassion was not just for the clique of believers. Also its rather tying things with external pieties like prostrating, contrary to the direction of Jesus' teaching on prayer, and indeed Jesus warned about the danger of such externals, if what was happening in a person's heart was not genuine and sincere.
Maybe its suggestive of a group, who see themselves as pious, but are rather exclusive and rather too haughty to those not in the clique. So this might suggest a history of some kind of religious movement, as Odon Lafontaine presented in his thesis, headed up by someone. They are seeing themselves as connected with Torah and gospel believers, but have a rather ritualistic idea of things, and not really knowing the gospel there.

      I agree.
Many hints point to religious piety in monasteries or from church service. These texts that became the Quran were both lectionnaries (qeriana) and homelies (about God and paradise, the end of times) that were transmitted [not verbally as muslims claim] and badly translated from aramaic to arabic..
The historical arab Muhammad may have been inserted in the corpus with hadith becoming verses.

YOU SEE THEM BOWING AND PROSTRATING [IN PRAYER], SEEKING BOUNTY FROM ALLAH AND [HIS] PLEASURE. THEIR MARK IS ON THEIR FACES FROM THE TRACE OF PROSTRATION. THAT IS THEIR DESCRIPTION IN THE TORAH. AND THEIR DESCRIPTION IN THE GOSPEL IS AS A PLANT WHICH PRODUCES ITS OFFSHOOTS AND STRENGTHENS THEM SO THEY GROW FIRM AND STAND UPON THEIR STALKS, DELIGHTING THE SOWERS - SO THAT ALLAH MAY ENRAGE BY THEM THE DISBELIEVERS. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.
Surah 48:29 speaks about who are the People of the Scriptures which can be determined by the MARK ON THEIR FACES DUE TO PROSTRATION. In other words, the followers of Torah and Gospel are Muslims. They were prostrating to Allah SWT. Nothing in the Verse that refers to Prophet jESUs (pbuh). -02-09-24

Thanks mel for ur valuable thoughts but my theory is slightly different Becuase the name Jesus is much ancient the time of 1st CE,so it is very tuff to say that the person who was in first century called as Jesus.
Yes it's true that muhamad or mdmd or Ahmad have the same meaning as praise one or the person who admire to praise from every one.
Secondly we forgot the peoples sabians or saracens or nasirians or madians in first century.these sect was already had the presence in first century and their teacher was John the baptist.these people was also tortured by the new faith and presecuated by them from diffrent region as egypt as well as yarushelem.these peoples was got the preservation by the assiriyan kings and Iranian kings.
As per my view they are the people who played a vital role to Islam in early days but later time they changed completely thoughts about muhamad and teaching and change it in completely political agenda.

With the the above full verse, the are potentially arabic roots that are hidden or more likely disguised.
Eg Makana ,could actually be a root of MKN,and there is no, NO in that verse. An additional Alif splits and tries to disguise the Root.eg two Alif together are as one.
Aba ahadin could be a title as father ahad.
Lakin word as to mean BUT seem dodgy as from a root of LKN.
In Urdu that Root is Laykin which means But.
Kataman nabeyeen could mean an end day prophet.
Ps.adding an Alif onto other Arabic letters does not alter the original letter.eg Lam+Alif or Meem+Alif or same as a lone Lam or a lone Meem.
And Alif is Alpha which refers to Christ.

@@garybowings1538 The Himyarite inscription from 523 AD is the earliest source mentioning the term "MHMD" before the advent of Islam, predating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad by forty-seven years. During this period, Himyarite embraced Judaism as its official 'religion.' In this inscription, "MHMD" is employed as a divine name, akin to the biblical Hebrew term Machmad, signifying the Praised One.
The use of "MHMD" as a divine name persisted in Andalusia (Spain) during the Umayyad rule, as indicated by a scholar's findings on materials from the Cairo Genizah. This term, with its divine connotations, suggests a continuity between pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods.
While the Quranic "MHMD" aligns with the biblical concept, the Islamic narrative, particularly the portrayal of Muhammad as the founder of Islam, is distinct. The Quranic narrative presents "MHMD" as Rasulullah, a messenger of GOD, akin to the Angel of the LORD in the Hebrew Bible. However, the historical context raises questions about the Abbasid-era narrative, suggesting an invention of the 9th century. Additionally, the Quranic portrayal of "MHMD" as the Angel of the LORD aligns with its use in the Himyarite inscription, emphasizing a divine messenger.
Another example of the flaw in the narrative is that the prophet, the Islamic Muhammad, invented and spread the religion of ISLAM, even though the concept of modern religion didn't exist in the 7th century. The English language adopted the term religion in 1200 AD, and according to the Encyclopedia of Islam, before the 20th century, the Arabic term DEEN was never translated into English as religion. The original meaning of the Arabic DEEN is law or judgment, just like the Hebrew term DIN.
In conclusion, the term "MHMD" traverses historical and religious contexts, emphasizing its significance in pre-Islamic Himyarite and early Islamic Andalusian periods, challenging later Islamic narratives and interpretations.

Mel is right, that the words in Arabic are "was not" and not "is not", as everyone can see using google translate. Even if it did say is not, it still refers to Jesus, as it says was/is not the father of any of your men. Well Jesus had no children, so he could not be the father of any of the men, but the false prophet Muhammad had 3 sons and 4 daughters, so he was the father of some of the men among them, unless they didn't follow him. And Surahs 3:144 and 5:75 slams the door shut on who is being called Muhammad.
