How To Set Up an Access Control System: Complete Step-By-Step Guide for Beginners

  • If you've never set up access control before, the hardest part is getting started. That’s why we made this video, to guide you through every step you need to take to install your first access control system today.
If you’re interested in Access Control, but you’re spending all your time online reading blog posts and watching CZcams videos about it, I have some good news for you. This is the last video you’ll ever have to watch before you finally jump in and set up that very first access control system.
Or maybe you’ve thought about jumping into access control, but there are just too many hurdles, too many obstacles in the way. Well, I have some good news for you, too. This video will help you look past those obstacles and just get started.
Here is the major premise of this video: start! Get your feet wet. Sure, if you’re looking at an 84 door access control system, you’re going to be pretty nervous about your first access control system. But before you can install an 84 door access control system, you have to start with just one. One door. One customer. One installation.
That's why we recommend the ZKTeco Atlas Series Single Door Installation Kit (Atlas 100-1) for all beginners wanting to set up their very first access control system.
So here’s our challenge to you, should you choose to accept it. Watch this entire video, beginning to end. All 30 minutes of it.
But don’t just watch it. We give you some very actionable advice in this video and invite you to act on it. So follow along with us, and by the end of the video, you’ll be completely ready for your very first installation.
What happens after that? Start from the beginning and do it all over again. Consider this video your access control training wheels. Use this process as many times as you need to until you become totally comfortable with setting up a single-door access control system. Then when you’re ready to move on, just keep taking it one step, and one door, at a time.
There’s a lot to learn when it comes to Access Control. And if you want to cram all that knowledge into your brain before getting started, then this is not the video for you.
If, on the other hand, you’re tired of reading about Access Control, if you’re tired of watching other people install access control systems, and if you’re ready to finally start that new business venture you've been looking into, then you’ve come to the right place. Sit back, grab some paper and a pen for notes, and take that first step with us today.

If there's a power outage, all readers would stop working and the locks would either lock or unlock depending if you have it set up as a fail safe lock (will unlock during an outage) or fail secure (would lock during an outage). That said, we recommend a UPS or backup battery.

Is their any type of certification program for access control installers? I want to be able to troubleshoot the physical components of the system. I am very familiar with the software and what I can and cannot do. But when those do not work, I get stuck.
At one of my jobs, the speedy gate is tied to the fire alarm and when we did a few drills, the last drill where the alarm was pulled back on and back off suddenly, the gate locked open. We tried everything from the software and from the device it appears to still be receiving the emergency signal. We reset the controller, badge reader, and activate gate. We power cycled it, reset it manually, and it is doing the same. Only one of the three gates. We don’t know why.
Other doors are just unlocking on their own and the software keeps showing error on the unit. The error shows when it works and doesn’t.
Is their a certification for troubleshoooting these types of issues or for an alarm installer?

I actually will not recommend doing it this way. You don't want your request to exit button to release at your panel. Your panel is an electronic component and your request to exit button is relying on it to release. I've seen these panel relays lock before and is never recommended to be release from the panel. It should cut power directly from the Mag lock. He should have added a PIR motion sensor to release at the panel and the button as a direct secondary option (mandatory in most states). Although he has good intentions I would never recommend a beginner to do it this way. He should've recommend an electric strike. Mag locks are risky by state and local county codes.

Man... No DPS means that your aren't doing access control, you are doing card access, you aren't monitoring anything for control. You aren't installing a fail safe power break on your manual REX. You aren't using an optical REX to follow the "no special knowledge" rules in the NFPA. The optical REX should of course also drop power to the Mag if it loses power itself. You also have no UL listed mag power drop on fire alarm.
Maglocks are also just about the worst thing to use to learn with due to the additional legal requirements, the extra work to actually align properly, to adjust the door closer for proper contact speed to avoid damaging the Mag body mounts into the header, etc, etc....
So yeah....you aren't teaching access control.

Yeah maglocks have myriad of egress requirements. Like you have to have a power interruption in line in the event of a Rex failure. The better option for a beginner video would have been something like a door strike or cylindrical lock that satisfies most egress requirements since they generally have egress on one side built in.
