  • Video #259 - A long time dream come true! My first ever journey in a Narrow Gauge train! A ride on a Heritage train! The railway line from Bilimora to Waghai was laid by the British for the Gaekwad's Baroda State Railway between 1914 and 1929. The railway line goes through villages, some remote towns and forests to reach a tribal village. The distance from Bilimora to Waghai is 62kms and the train covers this distance in 3 hours.
There are two trains every day in each direction. The track gauge is 2ft6in - ZDM5 diesel-hydraulic locomotives are used on this route. Trains on this route have an airconditioned tourist coach, which can be reserved through the IRCTC website.

A lovely trip taking us back to yester years where everything was done manually, the rustic stations, the ride through the forests, lots of vegetations on both sides of the track. It was really interesting to see the linesman getting down for every level crossing, closing and opening the gates and chasing the train. This made me wonder if it was really necessary until I noticed that the vehicles not showing any scant respect to the approaching train in the last crossing.

What a cutie train ride, in your own exclusive, executive "saloon". A throwback to a bygone era. Simply one of your best.

I live in Vietnam & have just watched your splendid video. Many thanks for rekindling my memories of NG & MG travel in Gujerat, and throughout India, including the journey from Ahmedabad - Udaipur with steam. Keep up the high quality and commentary of your filming. Much appreciated.

Good to see you covering an unknown route for many in India. A trivia, Parsis who came and settled in Billimora, took the surname of Billimoria.

Did you realise that Waghai is at an elevation of 400 MSL. This route would be a beauty to cover during the monsoons around the Independence day. Lush Greenery and Ambika will be in full flow. To your question on the roads and connectivity, there is a National Highway that connects Surat and Nashik which would be parallel to the tracks upto Waghai and then there is a ghat that rolls up to Saputara. This area falls under the Dangs district of Gujarat which is largely tribal and forests. No major towns.

Beyond Waghai is the hills and the drive upto Saputara ( the hill station of Gujarat) which is in close proximity to the border with Maharashtra, 6 kms away from Saputara is Hadgarh which falls under Nashik District of Maharashtra.

It's interesting when we have to take jus one journey and that too in an AC compartment. But for me who had to under take multiple trips over 4 years from 91-95 between Kurduwadi and Latur. this was nothing less than a torture. A 130 kms trip used to take 6 hours in those rickety coaches. Nostalgia is good, but for regular travelers the old stuff were a bane and needs to be get rid off as soon as possible. I would even advocate the gauge conversion of the existing NG sections, irrespective of heritage status. By the way, the locos in those days were ZDM 4 if I remember correctly.

The highway under which the train passed at 13.46 is the erstwhile NH8, now NH48, Mumbai to New Delhi.

Nice coverage. With greenery and the forests along the route it looks like typical forest routes of Karnataka or Kerala.
Hope this route will not be converted to BG.
I was also surprised that this is the first time you are travelling in a NG train. Please travel by Neral Matheran train whenever you visit Mumbai and post the video.

Very tasty vada pao used to be served at 2 stations on the KWV and LTR, Pangri and Yedshi. Not sure about the situation now because the new alignment is via Osmanabad.

In those days, new appointments as TTE's were posted at locations like Latur. Once we had to board an early morning train from Latur at 5 and did not have time to take tickets. We were caught at the next station, Harangul and fined. Those days we engineering students robbed the railway concession ticket forms from the college and got it signed by an expert among us who used to fake the signature of our principal. Then we would bribe the station master at Latur because these concessions were only valid twice a year. We also used these fake forms at CSMT reservation counter to boom tickets to Latur. Many students fro Kerala also used to use the same technique.
