- Look what I find inside my ATV engine-2013 Polaris 850 HO the took on mud and water with an air box failure. Does flushing with Oil or Diesel help? What else is hidden deep inside your ATV engine?
Know the risks before taking your ATV in too deep and whether or not you can afford the repairs!!

Great content! It really explains why I have been telling people for years to split the case and clean it properly versus flushing it out.
Yes it sure is an eye opener!
Appreciate the support 😁😁
Thanks for doing this video and being very detailed as well Im looking at buying a 2023 Massimo Buck 450 UTV the engine took on water so Im thinking it will be a rebuild andI can do most of the work myself. Your video was an eye opener what to expect if I take this job on. 👍
Good luck! If you have any mechanical experience, engine rebuilding isn't that difficult. The proper shop manual and a few specialty tools and you're good to go. The only big issue is if the cylinders and or block are damaged.
Very understandable video thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Make sure you can afford the consequences!! So true!!!😂
My honda went floating down the creek. Blew out the carb, and the engine with an airhose, and she was running 10 minutes later.
nice one!
Wow , good break down sir .
Much appreciated
Awesome to see the inside of the engine like that good info. Just curious how many km's were on your 850?
Thanks buddy!
It had just over 2500 KM, 257KM when I got it, It was basically brand new, exhaust was still clean and black, every nut and bolt was shiny with paint marks on them from the factory
This is not for all Polaris engines. I replaced just the cylinder of my Ranger XP 900
Good to know. But the ones with a mono block, you don't have the luxury of just replacing cylinders...
@@ADVENTURESThisWay yup, I understand
@@elkbow thing is, I don't think most new Polaris are aware until they swamp it...
I’m still gonna watch ya, hot rods make a rebuild kit for an alright price, I can’t remember if you said you had kids or not but I think this would be something good for him when he or she is older
The engine cases are for sale...
@@ADVENTURESThisWay have you ever had an issue with the starter solenoid? I gotta clean mine up pretty much every year or it just won’t start. I always test my battery and charge if need be but I fight it pretty much ever snow clear for the last 2 years
@@rogerfuller7876 no I’ve never had any starting issues ever. And I had original battery. My starter is completely covered in a hardened rubber. Seals it very well. I have heard many people with starter issues unfortunately, it would be frustrating ☹️
@@ADVENTURESThisWay I just take a wood handle wire brush the best I can and it starts right up. I also need that inline fuse before the box. Gonna miss seeing a Polaris on your channel. If you become unhappy with Can am you should look into a 16 450 sportsman. Just a flash and it’s a 570. Can run 27’s with factory suspension.
Great breakdown of the engine. night to know.. but something i feel you didnt touch on enough. so i tipped my quad in the water. belt box had less then a cup of water. air box nothing. but my exhaust was filled and i had to remove plug, tip the quad drain the exhaust. etc etc . not i have milky oil. according to your video my only option is take it all apart. i watched your video twice. now. just to make sure i did not miss anything. you say people do this and people do that. but then you went into a long thing about your engine. you said you road on it then it stopped. mine was towed and pushed into my garage and only thing i did was after draining exhaust and plulling plug was run mine for 5 mins to heat it up and burn out rest of water in exhaust. im finding a bunch of info about just change oil a few times but as a fellow polaris owner you know thats expensive. is there any alternatives. you would reccomend?
The real issueis the engine is a monoblock. If there is damage to the case, you are screwed. With other engine styles you can purchase new cylinders, monoblock need a whole new engine case. The best course of action is to disassemble the engine and clean it.
@@ADVENTURESThisWay just seems a bit excessive for a engine that has its 1st lil bit of water in it. all the stuff i can find. seems just changing the oil a couple times till it goes away with some sea foam added may be best solution for now. im surprised this isnt alot of information on this topic. aside from people with honda's LOL
@aubreygagnon78 you asked, I told you, do what you think is best or easiest...water definitely got into one of the cylinders through the exhaust valve. Spend a few hundred dollars and some labour now or spend thousands later. A Honda or Can Am send it...
@@ADVENTURESThisWay yeah . i finally found some more info on the topic. i ordered enough supplies to do 4 oil changes to it and going with using seafaom as a mild engine flush. that polaris oil isn't cheap lol. btw its a 450 ho eps. I'm set to get a 850 highlifter and leave this for the kids to ride. not downing your video in anyway. I been watching your stuff for a while now. im suprised i didnt com across this video by now. but compared to others this was best vid on this subject.
Put it back together and send it ....no new parts needed lol . The one set of cap bearings was sure beat up , you even had some dip left in the bottom of the motor for your chips haha. Good video !
I like me a good dip now and then!
The best part is all the extra wear is from the Polaris Tech telling me to run it to let oil warm up and then before changing each time-but the damage was already done just made it worse
@@ADVENTURESThisWay I honestly expected to see the timing sprocket spun out of timing as well.
@@SCOTIAN_ yes so did I!
Hey question. I have a 2021 850 and was in a puddle a bit too deep today, i was able to actually back out of it but once out i could tell it was running rougher and sounded different. I stopped it on a hill and pulled the belt housing plug and some water came out then i checked the air box and it had not gotten water into it luckily. I let it sit for a bit and then went to start it and it would run rough then die. I eventually got it to stay running and then drove it in low and then after a bit of riding it would run very similar to normal. Do u think that all was related to the belt being wet ? Since the airbox and filter wer dry and all i would hope no water got into the engine but with it running rough i am nervous. Any idea why it would act like that
@@MrMythingy1 it’s likely one of the spark plugs was wet, causing to run poorly. Could be other things but that would be a good starting point.. some dielectric grease on the plug boot will stop that from happening again
Great breakdown Don.
Thanks Scott, its amazing how many new ATV owners there are out there and don't understand the basics.
I got a little water in my engine, I kept cranking it, eventually it slowly idled to running speed. Should I worry about anything? It runs completely fine but I don’t know if there’s any other problems like water in oil or anything
You got water in the air intake?
Is it a Polaris Twin engine?
Yes you should be concerned, did you check the oil condition?
Well explained. 👍
Thanks buddy!
Apparently someone didn’t think so
@@ADVENTURESThisWay someone said something? I think they’re great.
No you just can’t please some people 😀😀
Hey so uh…. How much you think for a dealership to get a 2022 Sportsman 850 running after hydro locking it? Asking for my dumb self.
CAN dollars, a new long block is around $5000 plus several hours labour...not a good thing 👎
@@ADVENTURESThisWay ouch….
@@DrJosh2 what exactly happened to yours?
@@ADVENTURESThisWay water was reaching the intake, so I cut off the engine like I should, but buddy was having trouble winching me out, and I felt “pretty sure” my intake was well enough above water at that point, so tried turning it over to assist, but it just cycled without starting, then just stopped turning over. Just click/clunk. So it wasn’t high rpm, just as much as the starter would give it. But pretty sure it sucked some water in and tailpipe probably took a drink too.
Towed it back out and actually tried to turn it over after that and it turned, but I didn’t push my luck. Need to start pulling it apart and draining things tonight. Just expecting the worst.
But it didn’t click/clunk mid-cycle. I stopped, tried again, and at that point it wouldn’t turn over. So I dunno, but yeah… not good. >_
Quick question j flooded mines and intried flushing it but theres still water in the throttle boddy how do i dumb that out or dry it
I sucked the water outt with a hose but wanna make sure its off completely
There is a drain at the bottom of the intake runners just to left of throttle bodies...I would recommend taking it to a shop to check it over,
What year was your 850?
yes was a 2012 850 XP
Throw the Polaris away. Not cost effective to fix a complete engine overhaul
it was parted out!
Buy a honda
Hard to kill them...
