  • Hello all!
    Here is my version of a rear shock upgrade for the DR650, I installed a new firmer spring and 10 weight oil vs the stock weight, WHAT A BIG DIFFERENCE! Initial test ride around the block shows a big improvement, review video to come!

    I’ve read in a few places the stock shock oil was 3 vise 5. Thanks for the video. I’m about to do mine and this helps immensely.

    I did the same thing. Now I have the clicker set 3 off full soft

    Great vid thanks. I’ll be eager to hear your impressions on the upgrade.

    thnx for this. I have the big exhaust and didn't need to remove it - just in case people wonder if that's always necessary.
    Would be helpful to know how many mls of oil to put in there. I mean, do we fill till there's no more room to put oil in?

      Correct, actually there CAN'T be any air, that would cause problems. The air goes in the bladder only. You need it to be literally air free.

    Fantastic video and how to. How much do you weigh and how does it handle? Instead of doing a cogent rear shock I'd love to do the 10wt and spring combo.

      I'm about 190, and its a considerable increase in feel. It's a great mod for the money if your shock is in good shape 👌 obviously, if you are heavier and require a stiffer spring it will be that much "faster" in the rebound and compression with a given oil weight, but it will still be WAY better than just a spring swap!

    What did you use to recharge the shock, it comes with nitrogen to help prevent cavitation but did you recharge with nitrogen or juat compressed air?

    • @southerndualsport3827
      @southerndualsport3827  Před 2 lety +2

      So far just compressed air, its working fine actually. If you tend to ride really hard for a long time where the shock will get really hot, you should use nitrogen, because the air will heat up and expand slightly, not dangerous really, but it can change the behavior of the shock slightly. I think I set it at 150psi. 👍🏻

    What spring rate? I know you said 10/15% stiffer

      Its in the description, but it is a 7.2kg spring, and I weigh about 180lbs. 👍🏻 sag is set at about 25% static.

      @@southerndualsport3827 awesome, i went with a 8.3 how did you when to stop putting fluid in or did you just do it to the top?

    • @derekt7719
      @derekt7719 Před 3 lety +2

      And did you put the cap back when the shock was compressed or open?

    • @southerndualsport3827
      @southerndualsport3827  Před 3 lety +2

      I installed the cap with the shock fully extended completely full so it overflows when you install the valve.

    Why? I must have missed why this needed doing. Can someone tell me all the factors related to why the rear shock needs adjustments.. so I can have another reason to to tinker with mine which is still factory. I weigh 185 and do not ride aggressively @55 but we do have tremendous amount of annoying sand trails here in "the sand hills" greater pee dee area of SC .. thanks for the vid or another DR rabbit hole lol

    • @southerndualsport3827
      @southerndualsport3827  Před rokem +2

      The rear of the bike is very bouncy and far too soft especially if loaded with gear. The thicker oil slows the bouncing and makes the bike far more controllable and comfortable. Even with the stock spring it is a vast improvement. The rear shock stock is virtually useless in any rough terrain.

      @@southerndualsport3827 thank you so much! That cleared up a bunch and makes perfect sense ... I will do anything to give myself more control over this thick trail sand ... I am just now learning how to make adjustments to give me more control over this beast and I appreciate the insight.

      The stock shock and oil provides almost 0 rebound damping. It makes for a boingy rear that can catapult the rider over the bars after landing a jump, for example.

    No way you get all the air out without removing either bladder or seal.
