  • In part one of this two part Morgan special I drove the manual Plus Four, now its time to experience the more powerful Plus Six. The Plus Six is powered by a BMW 3 litre turbocharged straight six engine coupled to an 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox. That provides dramatic performance with no driver aids, its just you and the car ! Strap in and hold on tight as we take this smile generator into the Malvern Hills and put it through it's paces.
Famous the world over for its unique blend of craft, heritage and pure driving experience, the Morgan Motor Company has been manufacturing quintessentially British vehicles in Malvern, UK, for more than 110 years.
Passed down through generations, the same craftsmanship skills that were integral during the founding of the Morgan Motor Company in 1909 are as alive today as they have ever been.
The company was established in 1909 by H.F.S Morgan with the design of the now iconic Morgan Three Wheeler. This was followed, in 1936, by the Morgan 4-4, based on the Morgan steel chassis. This chassis was produced until 2020, making it the longest running production car architecture in the world.

I'm delighted with my new Plus Four. Wouldn't trust myself in a Plus Six. I think to drive one of those safely you need to be properly trained to handle such a car. 0 - 60 mph in 5 seconds is more than enough for me. The thing I love most is the reactions from other people, and the mutual waves exchanged with other Morgan drivers. Getting my own Morgan was my dream come true.

loved your report,i owned an old plus 8 which sadly i sold, ilove morgans but couldnt afford another so brought a bmw 240i with the b58 engine for a third of the cost of the plus 6,its a serious piece of kit especially in the wet,if i had a choice i would buy a plus 4,my time in the bmw with all the handling gizmos can get a bit edgy to say the least a +6 without the handling tech would bring my blood pressure up to its limit

Having owned a Plus 4 and now a PlusSix I am delighted to say that I too appreciate the difference. Whilst both are beautiful cars the PlusSix has that extra presence the wider body and wings bring, never mind the awesome performance. The driving experience is just thrilling, roll on some better weather for more hood down days out.

So I prefer the blue one to be honest the more old school wheels and enough power to just go for a nice cruise with my wife and be comfortable enough to give her the keys to drive as well. That old classic charm is so front and center and I love it. Great reviews Sir Pete! Very much enjoyed these Morgan car reviews

What a treat it was to have an opportunity to drive not one, but two Morgans on a very same day!!! I'd love to buy the one with a manual gear shifter. The automatic lacks in character in a stylish vintage cockpit. Thank you very much for your 2 Morgan films.

Think I'll stick with the Plus 4 like I said in the last video. For me, I'd be able to use more of the power, more of the time and still stay reasonably legal. It also fits in better with the drive down to the south of France, never going near a motorway, taking your time thing I'd want to do with a Morgan. As for having it as an auto, no, not for me.
Great car, I'm sure but not for me.

      @nigel.w Před 2 lety +4

Great videos. I’m picking up my new plus four next week. I opted for the auto box as the roads are so busy where we live. I figure the power will be plenty enough for me to drive to a pub but I can see the appeal of the plus six if you like things a bit scarey! One of the best bits is specking out your own design, but you don’t even have to buy one to do that!
I’m looking forward to checking out your other reviews.

Thanks for another great video. Having watched both, I lean towards the Four. I wouldn't rule out having paddle shifters, but it's surprising not to have them aligned with the steering wheel. I've never driven a car configured like that, but I'd think that shifting mid-turn would be awkward.
As a sports car guy from way back (TR4, Sprite), I'm so glad Morgan is still building these cars and so wish I could indulge.
BTW, that parking lot you were in would make a wonderful weekend "cars and coffee" spot. ;)

I own a new Plus Four and was advised not to purchase the Plus Six. . My previous car was a Ferrari F430 Spider, yet the Plus Four is fast enough for me. I also prefer the 8 speed auto; faster and yet more economical. Horses for courses. But I will keep my Morgan for some time and naturally paid for it with my own money. Unlike motoring journos :) I do however agree that the rev counter should be in front of the driver, but there is insufficient room for it.

  • @anthonydraper1231231
    @anthonydraper1231231 Před 2 lety +2

I think I'd have to go with the plus four at first. I'm itching to own another manual car, and I probably couldn't forgive myself if I got my Morgan in an auto. Plus, I'd look forward to ringing the car out to its limit without having to go on a track. I own two BMWs at the moment, both with the B58 engine, and it's properly quick for a 4cyl, so I bet it's plenty powerful in a car that small. These cars make me smile more than any other car I can think of. I was able to visit the factory with my school about ten years ago now, and it's wonderful that they've made such updates (the CX platform) while still keeping all of that heritage. I live out in California now, so it's a bit of a wait to get these new cars out here, but my name will definitely be at the top of the list.

I think there have been some mods to the plus6 to calm it down a bit. I bought a Plus Four and am delighted with it - it has enough power for me , and the auto box I find brilliant. The plus six I drove - in 2020 - frankly scared me on a damp road, and I think I would not be as relaxed as I am in the plus four. Both great cars - I am more than happy with my choice.

it's always fun getting into a small British convertible that's not been converted. I'm 6' 2" and I used to _"fall",_ left leg first into my MG Midget. Exiting was more of a desperate struggle using any fixed surface as a lever to heave yourself out.
I'm like you when it comes to wire wheels. When they're gleaming and clean, they look the business. But they take a crap load of looking after to keep them clean so I'd opt for the alloys too. And I'd probably got for the Plus 4. It's power is more accessible for more of the time. Though I'd still opt for the BMW autobox.

I have a MY22 Plus Four auto which is superb. I previously had a Plus 4 (2 litre Duratec) and then a Roadster (3.7 litre Mustang V6). The Roadster had an Aero Racing ECU and produced over 300bhp but the Plus Four is faster. I think it's a pity that you didn't try the auto as it is so much better than the manual. It has about 50 more torques than a manual and pulls like a train especially in Sport+. I have also had a decent drive of a Plus 6 and it definitely has it for comfort and ride. I loved it. However for the traditional looks it has to be a Plus Four.

The fact that you'd want more than 250hp in the Plus4 shows that you think the chassis was capable of more which is a good thing but for me I think we've lost a grip on reality when someone says 250hp in a 1000kg classic car is not enough for British roads. Personally I would like to try the 150hp non turbo version and change my attitude to the way I drive the car that I have in front of me (which is a classic beauty).

It’s really difficult to form an opinion without driving them personally, but your videos give a great impression of the pros and cons of both. My view may change if I drove them, but I must admit that I’m leaving towards the 4. My current car has a B58 and it’s a superb engine, but I find it’s often a little too much power to really exploit on the open road. In a lighter car I just feel that it would be too much. I would also want a manual and the flappy paddles and BMW drive selector are a turn off in the 6. Both lovely cars though and to be honest I’d love either in the garage for a Sunday blast!

I test drove a manual plus 4, and was pleasantly surprised, having owned a couple of Aero 8s that weren’t great. The salesman mentioned that several plus 6’s had been through the hedge backwards due to a combination of no traction control and a gearbox which in sport mode is inclined to drop 3 gears, spin the rear wheels and swap ends!

It is so frustrating when you love cars and motoring, but feel left on the “outside” when you cannot simply jump into a car when you need hand controls and adaptions just for a test drive, and manufacturers are not going to spend money to do so on the off chance of maybe gaining a sale. I guess this is something that is not going to change in my remaining years either.

    Two great cars.
I did the factory tour a few years ago and one of the guides said that if he was ordering a car (not the 3 wheeler) he'd have the alloys because the wire wheels look great, but they flex and as you say Pete, the wires are a pain to clean.
    I'd have either, but like you, I think if I got the 4, I'd want a 6....
    Nice review

Excellent reviews, thanks. I have owned 4 Morgans so far, none recently, but two classic 4/4 and two +8. I much preferred the Rover V8 3.5 and 3.9 Plus 8,; was for me a far more natural fast sporting and touring car and enjoyed the 'give it some welly' speed .. have had many classic sportscar 2 seaters including every model the Panther Car company made. I drove my Morgans all year round in all weathers but also owned several classic TVR along side them so swapped between those and two different Porsche.
This year after some many years in SUV and other more 'mundane' vehicles it was time for me to go back to the factory and did another tour. In the past I watched the build of one of my Morgan Plus 8 which was fascinating. I rarely if ever would drive a Morgan with the roof up, and never owned a hardtop. After my drives this year in Malvern it's clear that I agree with you that the Plus 6 is the one to order but I also found the Plus 4 to be a fabulous driver's car and the exhaust pops and notes are wonderful. Like you, I need the extra 'ooomph' and the acceleration thrill.
Of course prices have escalated since my last ownership and my current personal spec was quoted at about £110,000 (many extras) for a Plus 6 so they are 'serious money' now. Nothing beats the feel and 'gentleman style' of these classic motor vehicles; you cannot drive one without experiencing proper 'motoring' not just A-B travel as in mass produced transit cars. I narrowly missed out on buying one of the last Morgan Aero cars when I was there and ideally I'd get one of those convertibles if they still made them as I love the blend of classic 1930s and futuristic that these embodied, but I am not keen on buying pre-used cars and prefer the feel, smell and exclusivity of a tailor made new car on delivery day.
That leather is wonderful but I'm sticking to the classic wood dash and accessories not the body colour. I also miss the chrome bumpers and think the front and especially the rear looks 'unfinished' without them and without a spare wheel on the back instead of that vacant looking grilled surface. Unlike you, I prefer spoked chrome or body coloured wheels not the modern alloys.

For the minuscule price difference, it's a no-brainer, and for the same exact reasons this mate stated: In a month or two, one will yearn for more power.

I think for me I would choose the 4 Pete , Both of them look Quite forgiving when you want to press on the power , Especially in slippy conditions ? Epic videos . I would have one alone just for the smiles 👍👍😁😁

Hoping if have a good year, will be ordering one now Lotus gone. Did a tour of factory when my Dad picked up his. Just love the craftsmanship. Nothing like this at least at this price. Just really really want them to put a manual in it.

Fab review. Two lovely cars. I agree with Ped's conclusion. I own a Z4 M40 which has the same B58 engine. Superb unit in any car and must really transform the driving experience in a Morgan. Where would you put the schnauzers?

Another great great vid Mr P. Shame no manual ......Or are you going to be doing a new video next week showing a few that were made but kept hush hush...? I get the impression you will see what can go to be able to accommodate one....I would pick the 6

I recently drove the 2023 versions of both cars. Like you, I surprised myself with the Plus Six, thinking “this is the one” for me! I didn’t find the paddle shifters a problem in turns - no worse than having to take one hand off the wheel in a manual car. And you could use the gear lever instead of the paddles for a more “manual” experience. 😀

Regarding the wheel jig: we asked what happens when that jig finally fails. They have a new backup jig waiting (likely based on the laser scans you were referring to)

The difference in width between the Plus 4 and Plus 6 is a little bit more than 15-16 mm, it's 106 mm, 1650 vs. 1765 mm.

For me, I think I'd ideally want the Plus 4 with the manual, but with the 6cyl engine from the Plus 6. As they don't offer that, I think I'd still opt for the Plus 4, and if I wanted more power, I'd have it tuned.

I've owned a 2014 Plus 8 since it was new. Now, 45,000 wonderful and trouble free miles on as I turn 70 I want to go back to a slightly simpler life. I've driven both the Plus 4 and the Plus 6. I think a manual Plus 4 beckons.

Always loved the Morgan, but wouldn't be able to shoehorn myself in with a hardtop, if in a carpark :) Was bad enough in my early 20's with a MG BGT.

Great videos! I'm with you on the 6 over a 4. Just been on the configurator and specced one to £106,000. Yikes! And that doesn't include a knurled aluminium dash, which I would love to add. Better get saving!

    Hi Ped
I knew after Part 1 you were hooked😉 Before starting to watch this evening, my bet was you would choose the Plus 6 despite the auto box. Who said power corrupts. As I mentioned earlier you ought to go for it and order your new second car, but maybe you are too attached to Ruby Roadster. If TG was not sure you sell the idea on minimal depreciation. Having enjoyed my Plus 8 over many years (old tec chassis & Rover V 8 , had to go one better with Aero 8, bonded Ali chassis & BMW V8 376bhp plus manual box.😘😘 As always treat with respect in adverse conditions. You must have a Morgan in your life, but do not leave it too late, otherwise you will be looking at a further step up in build quality, use ability and practicality in sports car guise as a daily - Porsche Carrera. Needless to say my Morgan friends were disappointed when I left the family.😥

I think I actually prefer the slightly more classic looks of the Plus Four. I’d have the interior a bit more classic too and less silver/grey with a walnut dash perhaps. And you’re right it does need the spare wheel on the back as it looks slightly odd. It’s a shame we couldn’t see under the bonnet and see a few drive by shots this time though. It would have looked good with that invisible selfie stick thingy.
