    Hey guys! I know that the "why not electric question" will definitely come up here, so let me give you some reasons why we didn't go this route.
    1. Electric is absolutely the way of the future. For the majority of boats who live at a slip and go out for day sails or weekends, an electric motor is a no brainer, because you can always plug in at the dock to re-charge.
    2. People seriously underestimate how much power you actually need to be able to regenerate on board in order to have reliable electric propulsion. No, solar on a 36ft boat won't cut it. In fact, on a 36ft boat, we're already pressed to fit enough solar to cover our "house" needs.
    3. That left us with the option to install a generator. Now we're talking buying and installing an electric motor, a huge battery bank, a generator, and a fuel tank for the generator. That's too expensive for us right now.
    4. We know Uma has an electric motor -- huge, huge props to them. Their boat is also significantly lighter than ours. It also comes down to willingness -- they're willing to accept the pros and cons of electric. We got used to having the long range of diesel which allowed us to do trips like the canals in Europe. And remember: all sailboats are already hybrids. Most of the time we're using wind. When we want to be able to motor long distances, we want the range of a diesel.
    5. Hybrids like what Tally Ho installed are also really interesting, but again, they're expensive. They also require a fuel tank AND a battery bank, once again a space issue that Tally Ho (a 50+ft boat) can deal with differently than MCII.
    6. Ultimately, like we often say: there is no one "right solution," there is only the solution that works for you based on what you're willing to pay and what you're willing to compromise on. This was the best choice for us and our boat.

      Electric motors on offshore sailboats are just dangerous. Sailing Uma is an accident waiting to happen. Electric sailboats will not save the planet. Sailboats are, like Aladino mentioned, already very green. YT influencers, sponsored by battery companies, never tell the truth about the dangerous downsides.

      Hi,as a retired marine engineer i definitely agree with your dad, keeping the engine simple means it is easier to carry any spare parts,also a faulty engine can sometimes be cobbled together to keep it running whereas involving electronics and computers can make things extremely difficult.a good choice.cheers Roly🇬🇧.

    I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge nor understanding of physics but still found this discussion between Aladino and your Dad fascinating and such an expression of the respect they have for one another. And they both (and you as well)never fail to thank those who advise and help in the process of moving Sailing Magic Carpet closer to her splash date. My admiration of you all is unending❤.

    I can't speak to the boat version, but the tractor version of that size is like a tank. I am still running one from the 70's. I can also speak to fuel consumption. Once you figure out that sweet spot for each implement (think prop) you can go all day on 25 litres, or wide open for 3 hours or so. Those torque/power curves are real.

      100%. Find that torque sweet spot and your diesel usage maximizes. Saves huge money on fuel.

    Peculiar. When I started to join you on your sailings in the Mediterranean, my idea was just to go along with a young sailing couple.
    I´m truly a Terra Firma man.
    As I've followed you along the French canals, German Rivers and the Netherlands I've been more and more curios of how sailing and boating works.
    Now, with a top with this engine video, I find myself really interested in boating engineering. Really strange but I can at least blame you for this.

    we love our Beta 60 on our Kaufman 47. It's a really solid engine, 950 hours young, with proper maintenance with oil reports every 150 hours that look really good.
    You have built a great team and are making solid decisions. Genius at work.

      Speaking of that shed, i cant tell you what video it was but i found one of my favorite songs of 2023 that has been on repeat since then. Ill miss those days. Especially since i live in seattle and i thought they would launch from here. But its ok , im super happy and excited for them and i have memories! ❤

    If you had a rig/sail failure, I would want the capability to return to port or continue to destination. If medical issues were involved in the incidence, it could be life threatening. Currently diesel is the only thing that could possibly give you that type of range with out betting the farm that the sun will shine. Then there is the costs, weight etc. that you mentioned. Very intelligent choice.

    Wenn ihr könnt, das hängt an diesen Motor eine BALMAR Redline 6 Alternator an. Die sind weltweit führend und äusserst effektiv. Hab meinen nun 1 Jahr und bin begeistert. 100 W bei knapp über 1000 rpm und 4-stufige Ladekurve und meine Batterien sind in kürzester Zeit vollständig (100%) aufgeladen. Was mit normalen Lichtmaschinen (W-Ladekurve) gar nicht möglich ist.

    3 More advantages of non- common rail mechanically injected diesels:
    1. Electric power loss does not necessarily stop the engine running on a mechanical engine. It does on Common rail. This is a particular consideration with any Lithium installation where the BMS can abruptly shut the system to zero volts to protect the battery. Discomforting if you happen to be running a reef entrance at the time.
    2. High pressure vaporized diesel fuel is a fire hazard in a leak situation. In a tiny engine room it is potentially explosive.
    3. Microchips are a necessary evil today. But on a boat they are the most pernicious of gremlins. Good on you for demoting your engine's to monitoring status.
    Good call on the reduction gear. One thing Beta has received some criticism for is that their standard gear pairing is less than continuous duty without gear oil cooling.
    Beta has done an amazing job at being DIY and generally installer helpful. Scott sounds like the west coast counterpart to Farren out here on the East coast.
    Enzo is a great name! I went with Rudolph - both for the red nose and the original inventor!

    Completely agree with the traditional injector choice over the common rail option. Also keep close eye on the quality of fuel when you do fuel in out ports. Get some water cut paste in your fueling set up. Water in the fuel is the bane of marine engines. If you're going with Racors, those clear lower bowls will make it easier to notice contaminated fuel, but sounding the tanks with water cut paste will let you know immediately if there is a problem when fueling or if there is a bad tank vent that is allowing water in.

    As usual I’m impressed just how competent and professional this boat build is. On my boat, a 41’ 15 ton trawler, I have a Ford Lehman 120, naturally aspirated and very old school, built in 1979. For engines simple is good. I might suggest for filtration having dual Racors between the fuel tank and the engine. If you do have bad diesel you can switch over to a new filter while underway and replace the dirty filter. Racor 75/500FG duplex fuel filter.

    running the engine at the correct RPM where you hit that torque sweet spot is something most mariners (and all car ppl) don't quite get...its a fascinating topic and this was another great episode

      I’ve been into car tuning and racing for decades. These days I get off on my Atkinson cycle plug-in hybrid loping along with moderate load, making barely any noise, and absolutely sipping fuel in the process.
      Then I go online to the groups where people complain about not getting the advertised fuel efficiency while passing people on the open highway, asking why their engine is always screaming. Uhh, you didn’t try to understand what you were buying.
      I was a little nervous when they started talking HP, but as soon as they started geeking out on cruise efficiency I relaxed.
      MCII is going to be a properly equipped boat and so satisfying to helm around the world. I love this for them.

    Have a look at what Fellow BC Canadians at Edison motors are up to with their Topsy Hybrid logging truck conversions ..
    You drive from electric but run you're ICE generator at its Stoichiometric optimum.. less fuel less pollution less wear and tear. The whole plot is lighter and more powerful. The fuel saving is 30-50% with an off road logging truck ..

    Very interesting conversation. Now I understand why a specialist in Island Packet yachts in Florida, called Mack Yacht Services, also re engine from Yanmar to Beta. I also followed your research on fridge and freezers and I'm now waiting for my coolblue eutectic freezer system to be delivered 😊. They offered a refurbished of my existing plate so I can keep the freezer installation identical 👍

    I've been watching your chanel with great pleasure but wish to talk about my experience with Betamarine. We had the 3 cylinder 20HP engine and found it good. We did have some problems with it though, some of which could affect you.
    1. The thermometer option involves a sensor that was in our case fitted close to the alternator and reduced the range of movement of the alternator when fitting or removing the power belt.
    2. The heat exchanger tube stack can go either forward or back when taken off for cleaning. In your case it cant go back because of the swan neck exhaust fitting and cant go forward because of the alternator. In some ways the straight exhaust system is more convenient.
    3. My Swan neck eventually got a hole in it due to the weld/ fixing of the cooling water inlet to it. Just be aware.
    4. I very much liked the idea of the emptying of the gear box oil. Very convenient. When bought my engine used same lubricant in both gear box and engine. this was later changed so the gearbox got EP oil.
    5. Beta insisted we fit a fuel lift pump as fuel was stored in the keel. This made bleeding the fuel system very easy but the pump made a loud clicking all the time.
    6. The oil removal pump may let the oil out in an inconvenient place. Think about how you can get a collection pot into position and remove it without spilling oil.
    7. Prop shaft seal. this will be quite difficult to access. I bought a good carbon/stainless seal in Belgium which lasted very well. Th old, already fitted greased seal was a horror getting grease everywhere.

    Maya, I couldn't help but notice your eyes "rolling " towards the ceiling at the end of the video. It was if the "Artist" was barely tolerating the technical convention. I.I'm sure that was not accurate but, I had to laugh out loud!!

    Well done! As a retired electrical engineer myself, it was a pleasure to hear Maya's father's discussion on engine sizing, propeller rpm, torque curve, fuel consumption, etc.. Proof that a dose of engineering beats the WAG (wild guess) approach every time. The amount of thought that you have put into this boat project is epic and will hold you well as you cruise for years. There's an old saying: "when you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there." You folks are at the opposite end of that spectrum. Hope that Canada has been kinder to Aladino wrt visa duration. Keep up the good work and every wish for health and success with MC II in 2024.

    Good choice with your engine. Keep it simple and uncomplicated. I put a Nani engine in my Lotus 950 when I built it and Nani use Kubota as the basic engine as well. I was very pleased with it and it ran beautifully. Cheers and keep up the good work. Ian

    being an old mechanic myself, you could probably run your new engine, with mechanical fuel injection, on used vegetable oil in an emergency 🙂

    great to get some insight to what happens in the background, making arrangements for engines etc
    i remember too dealing with customers abroad, always an interesting experience and getting on so well, i always used to joke, if ever we meet remind me to throttle you - i did finally meet one customer out in Florida, and yes i did get to throttle him, great guy and i love dealing with these same kind of situations

    Great choice guys..., and what a team! A few years ago I wanted to re-power my old Hallberg Rassy 312 Mk1 and I would have chosen a BETA, but then I sold the boat in favor of a more recent and confortable Moody 33 Eclipse (10 years younger). The original Volvo MD11 engine had a lot of hours but worked perfectly despite being a little weak for the 5800kg of my HR. The original Volvo in my Eclipse 33 is only a little more powerful (28 HP) but sufficient for its 6200 kg. 4 HP per ton are respected but I think that great importance should be attributed to the propeller and its correct dimensions. Congratulations for your very professional and passionate work. Well done!

    Great show. One note of caution: make sure to add security cameras in and outside your storage and more locks. That motor is very expensive and now it's location is well published.

    Interesting to hear the engine story. Lots of similar brands and ideas are seen the the UK canal boat channels I watch. Beta 43 and PRM 150 are quite common. All the best.

    I used Skene Elements of Yacht Design to calculate horsepower needed and propeller dimensions. This was a long time ago. In my case I was advised by this book to have a smaller diameter and a bigger pitch for my propeller to reduce the drag a bit more. In practice it worked out fantastic as I may say so.
