  • How well does the Kyosho FZ02-R Rally do on an on-road track against an XV-01 and a truck disguised as a Impreza? 😁 To find out I visited Checkered Flag, and on road circuit in rural Yamanashi. 🏁
    It has been over 15 years since I last ran on an on-road circuit, so I was a little rusty! 😅 But it was good to try different aspects of the hobby. Although it doesn't look it in the footage, it was bitterly cold and very windy. My older Go Pro batteries tend to cut out in cold temperatures and I thought the camera was recording when it wasn't.🤦 Hence the lack off FZ02-R footage on the track. Need to get some better batteries!
    I plan to return to Checkered Flag in the near future and do a proper introductory video. I also couldn't resist picking up a modern on road chassis with an eye to possibly competing in Tamiya's Challenge Cup at some point.
    On a personal note. I'm in two minds as to whether or not to continue to cover (to the extent I have done recently) on-road/rally content on Kai City RC. As the channel has (until now) been predominantly buggies and it's what people come to expect from me. I know some people might not be interested in road going chassis and aren't really interested in watching content like this.
    Hopefully though, the vast majority of viewers will welcome a bit of variation. 😊
    What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
    And, as always, happy RC'ing! 😁

    Appreciate these FZ02-R videos. You're one of a very few who have posted anything on this new platform. I have one on pre-order, really looking forward to it.

      @@mikeruhl Congrats! The body on the FZ02-R is superb!! Almost too nice to run! One thing I will say, I'm new to the Fazer chassis and I recently picked up a set of on road wheels/tires for them. A little on the expensive side, but they came pre-glued, so. But. they have got to be the softest, fastest wearing tires I have ever used!! After a few runs at the track they have noticeable wear.😨 That and, in stock form, even with the optional sway bar, the FZ02-R rolls way too much for regular on road track use.
      But in the dirt...😎👍😁

      @@KaiCityRC Try a set of the Traxxas 8375 on-road wheels/tires. They're standard for the 4-Tec 2.0 VXL and a pretty stiff compound. The 8378 set is softer, and comes standard on the brushed 4-Tec 2.0. They're not cheap, but the 8375's will last longer. For parking lot racing with my 4-Tec, I like to run the softer 8378's in the rear and the stiffer 8375's in the front - a trick I picked up from building Tamiya M-chassis kits. But yeah, it's gonna body roll too much for serious track use. That's ok with me though. I got to run on a variety of surfaces, as you mentioned in your vids. I'm also going to stick some drift tires on it and slide it around - that's when the body roll is really fun!

      Been running my Fazer Rally the past couple of weeks. I've run it on grass, dirt, gravel, mulch, and asphalt, and it handles it all very nicely. I've run it on asphalt with touring car tires (from my Traxxas 4-Tec 2.0 VXL) and hard plastic drift tires. Today I ran it briefly with a 3S 80C battery. That was fun, especially on the asphalt - quick spin-arounds were a blast - but boy did the motor get hot! Won't do that again without a gearing change, which is what I'll try next. Thanks again for the videos!

    From the little driving I've done off-road and the rally jumps on road, you can really tell they put some time into tuning this suspension to the real thing. I noticed the body lean throwing it around in the 3S testing video, but she stay flat and stable even hitting bumps sideways. Good breakdown, the FZ02 R definitely shines in the dirt.

      Absolutely! I like how my Xv-01 drives, but on the dirt and rougher ground, the FZ02-R is much more capable. 👍

      Maybe try the Kyosho Fazer Mk2 HD Sway Bar Stabilizer Set for the body roll.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thank you for the suggestion! 👍 I hadn't considered doing that. I purchased FAW208 HD Stabilizer set (along with a bunch of other options) but have yet to install any of them. You're right, it would certainly help reduce some body roll while still keeping the softer, more compliant suspension. Cheers! 😊

      Thanks Addam! Watching the trucks on the track it's easy to see why they're so popular! 😀👍 I'm slowly getting the body on mine done. A lot of masking if you're going for box art (or near box art). I'll definitely be returning to Checkered Flag RC Circuit for some more on road fun. 😊

      @@AddamsPlayground All of the trucks seem to be quite a challenge to put together. Much like the BBX, lots of smaller pieces need to be cut and put together, plus plenty of masking, tons of decals and the need to spray flat clear on the outside in places! 😅
      That said, I'd normally not even bother trying to do box art and just do my own thing,. But for some reason, this time I'm determined to get it as close to box art as possible! 😁

    I set up 2 Fazer Mk2s, 1 with the Rally conversion kit and Ultima RB6 shocks and the other is setup for tarmac. Instead of trying to go both ways I went and built 1 for each kind of use with way too many upgrades.

      I've got a similar setup now with my Fazer and XV-01. The Tamiya is very much setup for road use. The Kyosho, does way better out in the rought stuff. 👍

    Really appreciate the kyosho rally review. It actually helped me make the decision to buy one! Been having a blast with it but now have play in the left front knuckle where it rotates on the balls. Not sure if I should replace the ball to heavy duty metal or if it means the knuckle is worn and I have to replace that too.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 6 měsíci +1

      As this is my first Fazer chassis I'm also getting to know its strengths and weaknesses too. Apparently the stock plastic balls wear down quickly, so replacing them with the metal option ones is a good idea. I've also picked up the alloy knuckles and I'll replace both at the same time.
      So far, however, I've not noticed much wear in the plastic ones. Though admittedly, I've been busy with other projects and not had time to run the Fazer much.

    • @rexracer333
      @rexracer333 Před 6 měsíci

      What’s weird is I only have wear on the left side. Do you happen to know if I can just swap in the metal ball or if I have to upgrade to metal uprights to use the metal ball?

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 6 měsíci

      @@rexracer333 I'm not sure to be honest! The HD ST ball set (FAW219) does not come with instructions, but I'm guessing they'll fit in the stock uprights just fine. Additionally, the alloy uprights (FAW205) use plastic sleeves for the ball mounting points, so that points to there being no problem in using the HD balls on the stock uprights.

    The FZ02-R is glorious looking and moves so well on the rough stuff.
    Personally for me there’s no need to apologies for showing the rally stuff over the last few vids as it’s all hobby related 🤔 just shows my wallet more potential purchases 😂😫
    If this is your last video for the year then I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 👊 thank you for all the videos you’ve uploaded and maybe come to the UK and race Carl with the shoebox as Mark likes to call the trucks 🤣
    Have a good one!

      Thanks for the kind words and support. 😊 I'm glad people aren't being put off by the sudden change in content. RC is such a diverse hobby and I think it is nice to experience different aspects of it. 👍
      One day I do plan to return home to Derby. When I do, it would be great to meet up with other CZcamsrs (funny, never thought I'd be calling myself that 😁) and perhaps do some racing too!
      I've not got any plans to put out another video before the new year, but that might all change depending on when the Super Dogfighter arrives! Yokomo insist it is coming out here in December, but so far nothing it terms of an official release date. 🤷‍♂️ If it does ship this month, I don't think I'll be able to resist putting a video together! 😅
      Merry Christmas!

    Isn't there some sway-bar available for the Fazer chassi? To tame that body roll at little?

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 7 měsíci

      There is, and I have it along with a load of other options waiting to be installed.👍 I'm planning on doing the sway bar first (#FAW208) and see what difference it makes. I'm hesitant to alter the springs, pistons or oil as I really like how it performs on rougher surfaces.

    Is there a way to lower the fazer mk2 r for onroad use just in case i wanted to run an onroad body and on a more flat surface?

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 3 měsíci

      The kit shocks are VERY soft with lots of body roll and not suited at all to on road use. You could change the shock tower mounting hole to slightly lower the car, but the best solution would be to change the shocks entirely. If you wanted to use the kit shocks, you'd need to change their springs, oil, pistons and put spacers inside the shock body to limit extension.

      @@KaiCityRC maybe i could get the shorter shocks somewere? Or is the one car for everything idea kinda dumb? I dont think getting more that one car would be a thing i like to do as just getting one would be a huge undertaking id do on the future
