The fact that Alan Wake II has MULTIPLE (2-3 depending on how you look at it). Musical sections to break up the dark tones sound crazy, and it would never work. But it somehow defies all logic and works incredibly well.

It's why so many people love the Berserk manga. Yes, there are some seriously f-ed up and miserable moments in the story, but there are also moments of beauty, reflection, companionship, humanity, and love intertwined in the story that makes all of the sandness so so worth it.

Right. Mfs just always want that stale ass “happily ever after” and when they dont get it, then all of a sudden the story is “lazy” just because important characters got killed off.
      (Spoilers for Mad Max)
For example, recently I was watching people play Mad Max and mfs said the story was lazy cuz hella people die at the end like 😂😂😂 how did you expect this shit to go in the world they live in??
People are so conditioned to thinking the main villains in fictional stories ALWAYS have to “take their time” with or “spare” named characters before they actually lose or die in order to give the named character that extra plot-armor time to get out of a deadly situation or to get saved.
Imagine if they made it so that Scrotus didn’t kill anybody important just because “the audience wouldn’t like that”. Or if they only made him kill 1 person and spare everyone else for whatever reason and unnecessarily watered down his ruthlessness just to cater to the audience smdh.
Max started alone, and he ended alone.
Ellie started with everyone she cared about and ended with almost none.
Thats literally just how shit goes in the world they live in. You go looking for trouble you’re GOING to lose people. It WILL happen.
That’s not lazy, it’s beautiful writing.
Mfs are so used to everything revolving around what they WANT to happen.

I love stuff like Black Mirror, but giving the audience a breather is important. Levity not just in a comedic sense, but something as simple as a brief flash of romance or a small victory for the heroes, or a humbling moment of defeat for the villain.
These moments reward the audience for their endurance, and it them rally their strength for the next gut punch.

There's nothing wrong, but it's something that you should perfectly understand why it's such a problem for others. I think that's why it was so divisive with people. I didn't like what I experienced nor the story beats as I watched the characters I fell in love with get completely demolished as part of the experienced.
This is coming from someone who KNEW Joel was getting the axe (or golf club in this case) before the sequel was coming. I just wasn't prepared for the route they took.
I was harsh on the game, but in no universe would I expect others to feel the way I do. Because I acknowledge people like you exist and shouldn't feel bad for liking it. Simply understand why people didn't like it. These are risks for a reason.

I am desensitized to horrible things due to my own past, but the game series that bored me or killed my gaming mood was batman.
The sky is always filled with smog, there is no sunshine, there is nothing happy about that game series, no jokes to break the monotony of seriousness in the series, its about batmans past, ita about his reason for fighting crime, the horrible criminals wanting to torure and hurt people.
    Its just depressing.
I love the spiderman series cuz you get sunshine, you get jokes even in the most serious moments to help lighten the atmosphere of whats going on, despite the intense moments its still not 100% depressing or serious.
I love depressing things but i can only handle it for so long cuz i already have depression and trauma.
I understand when a game is trying to get you to understand a characters trauma or their misery or confusion about things im cool with that.
But again these things can be taxing even on people like me, i will close a game like that after maybe 5 hours of gaming and play something more light hearted.

As someone who writes a lot of stuff and as someone who likes to think they have a fairly solid outlook on story writing, I wholeheartedly believe in telling the story you need to tell even if that does involve creating some unrelentingly miserable. If that’s what best fits your world and your vision then don’t compromise it by conforming to what a general audience wants. If things need to be miserable, let them be miserable even if it’s everything that needs to be miserable, the same applies to levity and hope.
Dare I say as well that I think TLOU2 had a lot of lighter moments in it with the banter between characters however rightfully so, there was always at the very least some hint of sadness or mourning permeating every moment of the game. I don’t think anyone could argue that game didn’t have you feeling at least something. I think too many peoples’ tainted view of the game stops them from being able to see the hope and the brightness in the seemingly dire ending. Ellie has not lost her humanity and is in fact able to move on and begin forgiving Joel whilst Abby and Lev are free to live the life that they both yearned for, closer together than ever.

It was hard for me to get through because of the strange pacing choices with the narrative. If they had let you play as Abby in the first half leading up to her killing Joel and you not finding out about her true mission until the end. THEN have you play as Ellie to hunt down Abby, instead of constantly switching and going back in time in the story. It would have made it a lot more easier to sit through. It was an odd decision to constantly switch up the points of view, we didn’t need to know what was happening with each character at every moment throughout the story.

Stalking and hunting down human enemies as Ellie like Rambo would was exciting. the weapons that Abby gets to use are fun as hell. The gameplay of Last of Us Part II esp if u crank up the difficulty to Survivor or Grounded makes it such a thrilling game to play.

There was no levity or gratification at all, you had Joel going out like a chump a stupid pregnant lady travelling half of America for someone else's revenge, another stupid pregnant lady on the front line, and for half the game you're playing as a character you hate and the writers used brain dead tricks to make you empathize with general abstrong with "oh she likes dog"
And it ends WAY past the point where its base revenge bad theme was relevant, by the time the credits rolled everyone made stupid decisions and got what they deserved except for the most hated character.

@@Othawaii of course that’s what you think because you’re feelings are hurt that someone doesn’t like something you love.
It’s so ‘universally praised’ because critics are very worried about saying the wrong thing and upsetting a behemoth like Sony.
Imagine for a second that they panned a game that has a gay couple lead, an oppressed trans young person and a game that offered so much to ensure that it was inclusive to everyone like the controls and settings and such. Also not forgetting that they hired a very prominent feminist advisor to ensure that they didn’t follow video game stereotypes of women. Naughty Dog made themselves immune to bad reviews. The Twitter mob would have crucified them and we’ve seen the power that they can wield and pressure they can put on the employers of the critic.
That being said there will of course have been critics that really liked the game just like fans.
It has to be noted that there are an equal number of independent critics that slaughtered the game but many were shouted down as bigots or transphobes which proves my point. I acknowledge that some of them probably do hold such views but many were simply offering honest, constructive criticism and faced a significant backlash from fans and even the creators. After seeing that I don’t blame the critics for fawning over it to ensure a peaceful existence and protect their livelihoods.
