Very solid list but I’ll also be throwing DQXIS and Triangle Strategy in for consideration, both fantastic RPGs especially for fans of classic turn based and strategy RPGs respectively! But I’m also gonna toss some love over to Bravely Default II, I think that game is highly underrated
Bravely Default II is definitely underrated! Love that game!
@@ismaelarias3058 I found it so addictive and endearing!! Happy to see it get some well deserved love
yeah those 3 are awesome, and I'd also put Ys8 on that list.
What a top tier list OJ, just missing a few honorable exceptions like Triangle Strategy, DQXI S, Y’s VIII and now that I started getting into the LoH series and running the third Chapter of trails in the sky l, it’s definitely becoming one of my fave RPG series outright.
Awesome list! So many good RPG's for the switch - sad to not see the Atelier Ryza series on here, but understandable with all of the other games that are here!
I am behind on so many good RPGs like the Xenoblade games. Dragon Quest XI would definitely be on my list. I'm having a fun time playing through Bravely Default 2 right now. Since remasters count as well, Tales of Vesperia DE is another great game that would go on my list. If you count Dragon Quest Builders 2 as an RPG, then that is another great one.
I was surprised by the fact that dragon quest XI didn’t make into the list but I can see that all those rpgs are amazing
Or nier automata, another platinum games masterpiece, nor any of the legend of hero's games or ys, rpgs are strong on the switch
Considering the OTS is complete torture to the ears I can kind of understand why
Did not find that game fun at all. Something was missing about it. It was just bland in story. And the music oh boy...
@@logansaxby7224lol
@@logansaxby7224but they have the orchestral versions?
I think the best tactical RPG is Triangle Strategy or Fire Emblem Three Houses, the best action RPG is Astral Chain or Xenoblade 1-3 and the best turn based one is Octopath Traveler or Dragon Quest XI (but that's just my opinion).
Great list!
@@xDraZtiCx Thansk! I made now a list of my top 10 Switch RPG's but I made this one just in 5 minutes, so all these places will not be 100% set in stone and giving it a couple more days of thinking I would probably do some changes... Here is my top 10:
Place 1: Triangle Strategy
Place 2: Astral Chain
Place 3: Xenoblade Chronicles 1
Place 4: Fire Emblem Three Houses
Place 5: Octopath Traveler 2
Place 6: Persona 5 (just because Persona 3 is the Portable version on Switch what is terrible, if it was the FES version I would have probably put P3 FES above P5 Royal)
Place 7: Atelier Sophie 2
Place 8: Dragon Quest XI
Place 9: (edit) I wrote for place 9 Scarlet Nexus just to realize that game isn't on the Switch ups (lol), so for place 9 I will choose... SMT V.
Place 10: South Park The Fractured But Whole
Try Bravely Default II
@@Jdogtoocool I will one day... I heard great things about the series but I would like push my teeths into Cold Steel and Disgaea before going to Bravely Default. Thankfully I'm almost done with the whole Fire Emblem series, at least a good chunk of the games, I have played so far, FE 3 Houses, Engage, Awakening and now playing Echoes of Valentina.
@@Official_RetroMania Agree on the list except for FE3H. I found the social/school parts so tedious that I'm not even close to completing the game.. Engage was way more my cup of tea in terms of gameplay. Unfortunately the voice acting is just embarrassing at times tho 🙈
I don't play very many RPGs, but one of my favorites on Switch is Ys 8. What a phenomenal game.
The Ys saga is great. Play the Xenoblade saga too, believe me you won't regret it , all games area availables for switch.
Fantastic video! I've played almost all of the RPGs mentioned. And I really love the thumbnail. Turned out great!
I pretty much agree with your list. The 3 Xenoblade games all make it for sure. Persona 5 Royal and Persona 4 Golden are some of my favorite games period. SMT V was one you recommended and I ended up thoroughly enjoying and doing nearly 100% (all but the Demi Fiend). I cannot comment about Octopath 2 (since I have not played it yet, though I did buy it) or the two Fire Emblem games (I am waiting to play those until I get through Fates and Echoes on 3DS), but I trust your judgment on their quality.
Astral Chain is not quite as high for me, but more just because I found aspects of the mission objectives a pain due to the inability to backtrack at times--even when still in the same area--for things that are easy to miss. I have yet to complete some optional objectives as a result and am not sure I ever will.
Thanks for sharing, been mulling over which rpg to start on
Solid list. I would have had dragon quest XI S on this list. I think that is one of the best JRPGs ever made.
Would have loved to see Chained Echoes make the list but overall I think it’s pretty solid.
Awesome list! I’m definitely contemplating paying through Astral chain all over again!
I absolutely forgot about Persona and SMT yikes, yeah these games are definitely one of the best turn based JRPG's together with October Traveler and Dragon Quest XI.
Top 10 gets hard after 6 years Nintendo Switch, maybe a top 15 in 2024. Good list, I love those games🥰.
Awesome list! I've actually played 9 of these, octopath is the only one that I haven't played.
Surprised you didn't include Triangle Strategy! But overall awesome list 👌
One of your best videos this year. Great stuff!
Grandia Collection would definitely be in my list, because I'm a HUGE Grandia simp lol.
Damn good list sir. I agreee whole heartedly with these choices
I have not played any of these games and I’m super hype about fire emblem 3 houses or xenoblade chronicles 3 and I don’t know which one play first? Those of you played both what do you like more?
This list is full of great games, though that's not a surprise because OJ has good taste. Some other great RPGs on the Switch that you should check out if you like these are: Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster, Live-A-Live, Triangle Strategy, Ys Origins, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (though be aware that the Switch port has framerate issues in the town areas, this didn't bother me but it seems to bother a lot of people, so take that into consideration), and Langrisser I & II.
Great list OJ!
The ones I have so far are Xenoblade 2, P5R, SMT V, Astral Chain and Three Houses. And I sort of called Xenoblade 3 being #1 after seeing Royal at #2.
Says a lot that we gotta update our top 10 lists for switch RPGs every few months! We eatin' goood right now. 😅
Every time I see a Xenoblade cutscene I get goosebumps. What an unbelievable series!
Great list. I'd probably find a space for dragon quest 11 there somewhere but otherwise I think you nailed it.
Love the content bro keep it up
Awesome list. Exactly what I was looking for
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is easily the best RPG on the Switch for me (yes I played all 3 entries) followed by Trails of Cold Steel 3 & 4. If only the Switch had Trails in the Sky FC & SC, if only…
XC1 > XCX > XC3 > XC2
@@Karaamjeet All are opinions mate, mine and yours. I have not spent more than 800 hours on any other game in my life. I did with XC2.
@@Karaamjeet XC2 > XC1 > XCX >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> XC3
Solid list!! Agree with most of these frfr
xenoblade chronicles 2 got a lot more hate than i believe it deserved in terms of the story i actually like it more than 3, and i loved 3. However, nothing will beat the first game. I still get chills when I hear shulk screams at the beginning of the game. it's been the only series that has grabbed my attention as much as Kingdom hearts in terms of story and characters and a lot of that is just due to pure nastalgia.
The thing with Xenoblade 1, you don't even need Shulk, Like at all. I basically played the game almost exclusively as Melia as soon as she was unlocked, switched to Dunban for a bit and then switched to Fiora until the end. Shulk was almost never in the party except for the very rare times they force you to use him.
Point being, that game is fantastic however way you look at it and you can literally play any team you like.
Oooh amazing video, how about a Top 25 or even a Top 50 RPG tho 😏
make my christmas gifts liste unreal epic video ! merci !
I don‘t understand why everyone is so hyped about the story of the original Xenoblade Chronicles? Sure, the world and setting are interesting, but the story is very much your typical „group of kids decide to set out and save the world.“ I also believe it could have been shorter without losing anything.
1. Love this list
2. Wonder how many people will ask you what your favorite rpg games are on the next stream 😅
My top 3 would be:
1. SMT V
2. P5 Royal
3. Bravely default 2
I am a rabbid fan of the SMT series and its offshoots. Bravely Default blew me away on the 3DS and Bravely Default 2 was a great successor. I miss Final Fantasy (I have not picked up a Playstation since PS2) and this series gave me a similar feel.
The other 7 in no particular order are:
XBC 3
Ys XIII
Fire Emblem 3 Houses
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Triangle Strategy
DQ XI
Disgaea 5
Im having a lot of fun playin Atelier Ryza 3🔥
One day, in like 30 years, Three Houses will get a ground-up remake fixing all the visual issues. It will then be a perfect game imo.
I actually thouhgt i was going to see Triangle Strategy on your list based on your own review. To me, it ain´t no better strategy RPG on the console right now.
And i bought this game thanks to your video, which i appreciate a lot.
Played all three xeno games, personally think two had the best balance in terms of combat, story, music and visuals. Three had better combat but the story esp. the dialogues is too dramatic to a point it felt cliched, and the world isn’t as immersive as the other two since it’s divided up in colonies (just isn’t as creative except maybe for two areas). One have fantastic story and definitely my favourite world visuals out of the three (just really detailed and immersive), but the battles are difficult and side quests are a chore and can be grindy.
My favorite is Gems of War, puzzle RPG, just be in an active guild and it's far more fun, plus it's free.
Lol! GoW was great fun for a couple of years but not really for the gameplay.
I thought for sure you'd have Triangle Strategy in there given how much you hyped it up. Also, A little surprised not to see Nier Automata or Dragon Quest 11, though. I think 10 slots is not enough.
I'm also surprised. I actually liked Triangle Strategy more than Xenoblade Chronicles 3, I know a very controversial take but both games are AMAZING and top tier games.
I think OJ, should have removed Persona 4 Golden (because he already had Persona 5 in his top list at place 2) and just add Triangle Strategy instead.
Also yes top 10 is not enough the Switch has many great JRPG's, in general you would need a top 50 or so to make a list to satisfy everyone and to mention most of the great amazing RPG's on that system.
Yup. He called it the best strategy RPG in years and the best strategy RPG on the system and it didn't make it! That just shows his love for fire emblem engage which was not out at the time he made those claims.
He has hyped up all of the games included in this list. Switch has a ton of RPGs, so...
I think it's just a testament to how many great RPGs we have in the system by the quality of games left off, I've definitely put so many hours into other games, even the Witcher 3 port that I don't think people would even think of but we really are spoiled with some of the quality games we have on switch
Great games and video man
Very good list, I thought you liked triangle strategy more than Octopath 2.
There are so many jrpg's: old, new, retro inspired etc. But i think Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is one of the best action jrpg i've ever played. Crystar also being great!
But have not played everything on this list and i have too much games (and work and stuff) in my steam, ps, xbox, switch etc. digital collection.
And i'm not even mentioning my physical game collection with more than 200 ps4 games, more than 120 switch games and so on.
Ogre Battle Reborn is the jrpg (more strategy though) i'm playing right now in combination with other games. Arcadian Atlas coming out in about 3 hours on steam. Sea of Stars being a promising retro inspired jrpg. Next to Chained Echoes and Rise of the Third Power already being awesome.
Great video man, plus 1 sub!
Awesome video to wake up to! Thanks!
Awesome list, though I was surprised to not see Dragon Quest 11 or Triangle Strategy!
I can agree with TS but not DQ11
@@onmywayto974 how come? It’s a fantastic switch RPG
@@802Booth Bro, to me it's bland. I wanted to like it. It's almost predictable how each character acts. It's too happy-go for me. The people that raised him and who he grew up with; their village got destroyed and it seemed like he didn't really care. No emotions. The music was annoying. I played the game two separate times and both times I lost interest. My last save was at the port level where they had to help the mute kid get his voice back. I wanted to pick out something in the game that amazes me but nothing in it is original.... I ended up giving the game to my brother in hopes he would find it more enjoyable than I did. If you loved it, I'm glad for you. It just didn't resonate with me. I enjoyed games like Chrono Trigger, FF6, Tactics, Xenoblade...
Xenoblade chronicles 2, fire emblem three houses and dragon quest 11 is my top 3 and very addictive games. Astral chain, fire emblem engage,pe4,pe5 is right below. Xc 1 and 3 is not even on my top 10. Did play them both for about 20 hours each and it never clicked like it did with xe 2.
OJ, you have to do the top 10 RPGs on NSO. Yes, there are now more than 10 RPGs on the NSO expansion pack.
Can you jump straight into Xeno 3? Or would you recommend playing the other two first? My sis just gave me her switch and I love JRPG’s!
I was fine jumping into XBC 3. Never played the previous versions either. The story is self contained but it has Easter eggs for those who played its predecessors.
How is DQ XI not making this list? Currently going through XC3 and thoroughly enjoying it.
XC3 what got me into the series in the first place
Love the videos man
Hey bro, I am on your channel for xenoblade content for hours cause I don't know should I buy 1 or 3. I played x1 for 10 hours on 3ds but you know it wasn't the best experience:D
I really want the type of game like you could customize ur chara and class etc. Is there any type of that in switch?
Yes. Get Diablo 3. Just note you customize your PC and class by the equipments you wear
Great video.
OP2 has been a blast for me.
Great list. How was these rpg games Chained Echoes. Is it wrong to pick up girls. Shiren the Wanderer. Brigandine and Diofield Chronicle. Where does these games rank
Nice. I started buying n collecting for the switch last year. I have everything except for 10, 9. Time to ebay more deals
Incredibly sad to see how Tactics Ogre Reborn's being slept on. It is timeless.
P5R is still my favorite game haven't played XC3 yet may have to give it a go
Here to vote for Octopath Traveller II, such an amazing game!
Top 5 Switch RPG Exclusives for me are
1. XenoBlade Chronicles 3
2. XenoBlade Chronicles Definitive Edition
3. Fire Emblem Three Houses
4. Fire Emblem Engage
5. Triangle Strategy
All of Them are 10/10 MasterPieces
Here are some of my recommendations not on your current list:
Diablo 3
Witcher 3
Mario+Rabbids Sparks of Hope
Ys VIII (haven’t gotten too far but solid from what I’ve played)
NieR Automata
Dead Cells (Castlevania expansion rules!)
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Monster Hunter Rise
Live a live was a amazing rpg game on the switch also.
Wow first top ten list were I played and beat most of them
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is also my favorite. I played them including X.
Xenoblade and pokemon where the reason I got a switch even though I got it late in the life cycle I do t have many switch games but I have all Xenoblade games love them
I agreed on Astral Chain - underrated. but yea, you're missing DQXI
10. Octopath Traveler
9. Live A Live
8. Crisis Core FFVII Reunion
7. Final Fantasy VII
6. Octopath Traveler II
5. Fire Emblem Three Houses
4. Xenoblade Chronicles 1
3. Triangle Strategy
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 + Future Redeemed + Torna The Golden Country
1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I know the top 4 are mostrly Xenoblade but damn I love this series. Unfortunately I haven't played Persona but I'm looking forwad to it
Tried AC, broke a tv on training room test mission and dropped it....i think my newbie mistake was starting with ranked missions enabled :/
Welp you gotta make another one cause zelda part 2 is about to drop
I probably can't even make a Top 10 with different series. DQXIS is the only one I really liked with (some) Pokemon Games and Tales games (also Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and Rise since they are Action RPG's). XC1 is the only one with 3 I "somewhat" enjoyed. I hated 2 because of several issues I had with it. Especially Mythra was unbearable.
I finished xenoblade 2 in 2020 and then I finished xenoblade 1 last year so I'll probably wait till 2024 to play xenoblade 3.
Three houses is maybe my favorite game on the Switch.
All 3 Xenoblade games should be together and where is DQ11? Also Octopath Traveler 2 is amazing but the 1st game should be on the list as well
I am still so salty aboout two Personna games not being published physically 😡 Great list, thanks! I still have a few of them on my "to get" list.
Bravely default 2, Octopath Traveler 1, 2, Dragon quest 11. And many remastered rpgs, Grandia 1+2 etc. Let's have a giant grind-fest!
Triangle strategy and the witcher 3 are games that nerds more love
Dragon quest xl and Xenoblade Chronicles 1 2 and 3 top 5 best rpg all time
Astral Chain love that game so much
Right on time❤
hold up, no triangle strategy????
Chained echoes and triangle strategy
XBC:3 is such an amazing game. I think it's replaced the combination of The Witcher 2/3 and the ME trilogy as my favorite game series of all time. It's like an entire trilogy of games in one, it's like 7 seasons of an awesome anime in one game. This game's story is simultaneously that epic and dense with everything from plot to personal character stories and growth. The world accounts for so many actions that happen. I remember completing a quest that had potential story implications for the people at another camp, so I traveled back there just to see if they'd have something to say and they always did. I can't think of a more thoughtfully made game. I hope Monolithsoft is getting the love they deserve from Nintendo for their next project. This dev has always made interesting and unique games but with XBC:3, they pulled out all the stops and I think they've really created something for the ages. Seriously, if you don't own this game, go buy it. If you don't own a Switch, it's worth it just for this game, it's that good, all throughout the 150hrs it'll take to complete every quest that has consequence for the overall plot and characters, I don't even know how many characters get their defining moment in this game. It's a true adventure in every sense of the word, for every medium this game touches on.
Xenoblade is right up there with best for me. It's such a shame they're so underrated and overlooked, i can't beleive i almost didn't get XC2 because of dunkey but I'm actually grateful to god every day that i got the game. I enjoyed every second of the entire series
@@shivamarya5225 xbc2 combat is fire. Though the gacha is killing me, just gimme me kosmos damn it.
Question. I have a switch lite and XBC:2 looked horrible is handheld mode. Digital foundry said it’s a lot better but what’s your opinion? I really want to play 3 but I might trade out my lite for a regular model so I can get the full resolution capabilities in docked.
@@sicdedworm09 Handheld can still look pretty blurry with XBC:3. I didn't really mind it with XBC:2 though and played 2/3rds of XBC:3 in handheld mode. I finally decided to dock and play on my 42' 1080p bedroom TV for the last 40hrs and it looked significantly better and didn't blur at all for the last 1/3rd of the game. This is how I'll be playing it next year when I go through it again. It's not as bad as 2 throughout in handheld but it gets pretty damn blurry still. I think the downscaler is less aggressive than 2 but it's certainly still there and it does get just as bad, just not nearly as often.
Do you think for someone who hasn’t played a XC and don’t know if they’ll stick with it, to start with XCDE or 2 or 3?
IMO, Astral Chain is not an RPG in the same way that Castlevania Symphony of the Night is not an RPG. It has some elements, but that’s not the main focus.
Three houses would be perfect if I didn't have to deal with the monastery after every major battle.
NieR: Automata is the best RPG i ever played on switch
And really excited about the upcoming classic JRPG successor, Eiyuden Chronicles
Fire Emblem is def the best.. Nevertheless we sure have a lot of options as far as the genre.. Switch reminds me a lot of those Sony handhelds like PSP & Vita.. I'm on pins and needles waiting for their next handheld in '24
Always can appreciate a list like this. My Top 10 would be:
10) Persona 5 Strikers
9) Triangle Strategy
8) Pokemon Legends: Arceus
7) Astral Chain
6) Fire Emblem Engage
5) Shin Megami Tensei V
4) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 + Torna the Golden Country
3) Persona 5 Royal
2) Xenoblade Chronicles 3
1) Fire Emblem Three Houses
Honorable Mentions: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Bravely Default 2, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Persona 4 Golden, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and Octopath Travelers 1&2 (although I have only just started 2)
Strong list, though I would probably remove Astral Chain and replace it with DQ 11
Agree with you mate. Also i will take down Octopath Traveler II and replace it with Triangle Strategy.
Solid list! Missing DQ11 for me but there's no shame in it losing out to those games
I haven't played 10 rpgs but my list would be
SMTV
Xenoblade DE
DQ11S
P4G
P5R
I would definitely put Ys VIII / Ys IX in that list.
In summary, fire emblem, persona, and Xenoblade are goated.
Mm intriguing list, I’ll have to look into a few of them as they peeked my interest, my top 10 may be a tad unconventional 😅 however their games i throughly enjoy.
1. The legend of heroes: trails of cold steal 3/4 ( yea kinda a cheat)
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 ( like the others as well however aside from X this is the only game I keep going back to)
3. Fire Emblem Three Houses
4. Harvestella
5. Atelier Ryza trilogy ( yea I’m grouping all together as for me their to hard to separate)
6. Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon
7. Persona 5 Royal
8. Haven ( not for everyone given the type of game, however I would not hesitate to recommend it. Just be aware of the type of game it is)
9. Ruined King: A League of Legends Story ( digital only unfortunately, however it’s a fun time)
10. Dragon Star Varnir
New follower here and just wanted to say thanks for well done reviews. You make it feel like a gamer talking to gamers rather than someone plugging titles for a corporation. Keep up the great work.
John
For me the best nintendo switch rpg is Elden Ring, not only it runs well on my switch lite but the graphics is top tier.
My dude how did you leave DQXI and Chained Echoes out? I personally enjoyed DQXI more than P4G. P4G gameplay felt repetitive and the story was easy to figure out after the 4th rescue mission. Everything was predictable- rescue newly introduced character, character joins party, wait 1 month before plot develops, rinse and repeat. It was hilarious, but not much of an improvement to P3. Same with FE3H, felt repetitive and was easy even in hard mode. I was bummed out the first half of the game must be replayed over and over to unlock the other paths.
