Last week I asked if the Lenovo Thinkpad T440p was still a good laptop? • Is The Lenovo ThinkPad... Well, it is good for the money, but does it compare to the more expensive Thinkpads? Not really... however, there are still reasons why it is better and many of you could opt for it rather than dropping 3x as much money on a fancy new laptop. Let's talk about the differences in my new Thinkpad T14 compared to the ten-year-old T440p. #thinkpad #lenovo #laptop #laptopupgrade

I think a giveaway is a fun idea. I really wish more laptops were as up gradable as the T440P. Soldering everything to the main board just6 creates more E waste, and do we really need more ewaste?
Also, I really appreciate that you've been emphasizing living smaller and simpler. I find that most of the big tech youtubers, intentionally or not, contribute to this toxic cycle of constant upgrades and make their audiences feel like they need the latest and greatest hardware when they really don't.

It's a shame the direction lenovo went with their newer laptops. They had the golden opportunity to be known as the most serviceable and reliable laptop pc OEM.
Might be controversial to say, but I think Dell might've taken that spot. Working in IT, most businesses use Dell anymore and are decently ok to service.
    Thanks for making this!

When I moved due to university studies I was considering a thinkpad like this because of its upgradeability. The only reason I didn't end up with one is because I first wanted a notebook with about the same performance of my desktop, and I also wanted the upgradeability, which as you know is hard to find on a new system unless you fork up the cash for a "gaming" notebook, which is what I did. I wish more companies made actually upgradeable notebooks but I guess that's not enough stonks.

I really like this as a follow up as not long after 2011, Id say maybe 2013ish? I noticed laptops really started to slim down a lot at this point likely in part due to things like the removal of the CPU socket laptops commonly used to have (not exactly sure when this change began to happen) and battery packs were getting slimmer and so on. Really quite a transitional time period for laptops in general where we'd finally start to see good 1080p screens and touch capability, usb 3, ssds you name it. At this point, if you compared a 2013 laptop to your average laptop from 2008, the changes were massive.

Give it away, give it away, give it away now. Also, you can pry my T430 from my cold dead hands. Yes, the display is horrible and the intel hd4000 graphics is getting old, but it works with geforce now, and with an external monitor and keyboard it makes a usable replacement for a desktop when needed. And just admit that you're jealous of my i5-3230m dual core cpu with it's 4-thread awesomeness that runs any OS pretty much still. And since it weighs 5 pounds I can use it as a weapon in an emergency. I'll probably have this thing until I die, unless I get a better one.

  • @majus1334
    @majus1334 Před rokem +3

Nice comparison. I've been considering an old Thinkpad or some other laptop that's not a "soon to be e-waste" for a while. I'm in the process of configuring/building my main machine as a hypervisor, so having a laptop around helps a lot. I'd probably go with older machine, since I don't travel a lot and it wouldn't be my main machine anyway.
Besides Thinkpads I also looked into laptops made by framework. They are made to be modular/repairable, basically an antithesis to Apple products. Nice taller 3:2 aspect ratio screen too. Although CPU on them is still soldered to the motherboard, MB+CPU combo upgrades are available, but somewhat expensive. They also have replaceable/customizable ports as modules and ability to buy OEM replacement parts to even different weight/resistance screen hinges! Not sure about their keyboard quality tho. But again, it's a new laptop which makes it expensive.
My old ASUS died few months ago. Had really weird problems with it for the pas 4 years, where windows kernel decided that it wasn't compatible with that hardware anymore?? Some voltage regulation missing / not working, so probably a hardware failure. Worked fine with Linux, but finally died few months ago. The only windows that could potentially run on it was the version that they use in ATM's or gas pumps, but yeah, not doing that. :D
I sometimes wish it made sense for companies to re-release some old models for people that would like to get them new and in spec they choose. Laptops, cars too. Would get some chunky thinkpad with all bells and whistles and a bmw e30 or such. :D

Funny to find this video, was thinking of a similar upgrade, T440p to T14, though probably Gen 1 or Gen 2 as I'm going for something under $400 secondhand. Based on the CPU model number you said (6850U) I guess this is a Gen 3 (might be nice to add that to the title). The 21CF003XUS showing on Geekbench also confirms Gen 3. I should've probably taken the hint when you mentioned the 16:10 screen because I've been seeing 16:9 screens in all the T14 models I've been looking at (though I'd love 16:10, I use 16:10 external displays at my desk). For me I don't care about the weight, I want better temps (my T440p is cooking itself on a regular basis and thermal throttling pretty badly) and a bit better performance, particularly from the iGPU and for playback of modern video files (HEVC, AV1).
I'm trying to figure out how much stuff from my T440p I can move over. I took the optical drive out of it and run two 2TB SATA SSDs with the OS on one and the other just for extra storage. It would be nice to at least move the storage one to the new machine even if I have to get a new M.2 drive to put the OS on. The specs on the Lenovo site don't mention anything about SATA. Gonna have to find a teardown to see what all you can connect inside I suppose.

I'm going through the same thing with my Lenovo T420 right now. Even with a 16GB RAM upgrade and 500GB SSD, it's definitely starting to show its age. It can run some games, but Morrowind is about as heavy as it can handle. The 1366x768 screen feels abysmal now that I'm used to 1440p on my desktop, but I feel like the screen upgrade isn't really worth it just because it still won't be able to handle what I'd like it to.

Hi, I recently discovered your channel. I enjoy watching you talk about the t440p. I purchased mine about 4 years ago used, and I upgraded the (TouchPad)... lol, I know you loath them. Well, I'm not a "tec" guy but was able to change the pad and repair the fingerprint reader, which was not working. My point being I think this is an amazing computer for guys like me who like to fix and tinker with their own stuff. Yeah, I said Tinker, lol. You get it. Anyway, may I have your recommendation for a new screen? I do not game much. I like tetris and old school stuff but I write every day. I saw on one of your videos that it was an option to upgrade to a higher resolution. However, not knowing much about tech, I just need a point and shoot type deal. Tell me which one to get and I can replace it. I'd like to make my flat dullish screen look like yours. 👍 I would be grateful for your help. Possibly a link I can just click to and pick the one I need. I have seen a lot of different choices. I'm just not sure which to choose. Thank you! O and the entire time I've owned this computer the ONLY thing I hate is indeed the TouchPad. When I'm typing my big hands always seem to touch it and before I notice I'm typing in some random paragraph. I hate it. So I'm going with your thoughts here. I'm go to figure out how to shut it off and get a mouse. Any recommendations on that too would be great. Should I get wired or no wire 🤔 thanks and Merry Christmas to ya!!

I had upgraded in 2020 to a Samsung Galaxy Flex 15, super sleek, all aluminum, nvme, qled, glass touch pad, touch screen, type c power on left and right of machine. Very expensive. Broke after 1 year of normal use. Turns out the aluminum top uses a plastic frame to attach to the base... Very disappointed. Will never buy samsung again. Now I am back to the T550 which I really had no business moving from except I wanted that type c power, beatiful blacks and lightweight, low power design. Something else to consider. Windows 10 Support will End in Oct 2025. Another thing to consider: My T550 can still run Win7 and is activated in the bios. I think Framework looks attractive but I wish they had 15 inch models. Believe it or not microsoft also makes great laptops.

I'm still on my old W520, it's lightning quick for the stuff I actually need to do on the go and the keyboard is great. It's also ungodly heavy, but luckily that's not a big problem for my purposes.
It even games a bit, things like GTA V and Burnout Paradise Remastered are perfectly manageable at 1080p on the 2GB Quadro 2000M. The latter even runs at 60 fps.

I have the T14 Gen2 and it's just so flimsy.. it's on it's _third_ motherboard. That's fucking pathetic.
The battery life is kinda bleh. No SD card slot. And just weird body warping and twisting...
At the same time it feels like no modern laptop is really worth it either

I like the Idea of a give away though I'd have to say I'd pass. I have 7 laptops sitting idle that I revived from work and I'm trying to find the right people for. So I'm good.

  • @patricioignacioklennerklen6025

I got the T14 from work and overall it's a really good laptop with nice performance, battery and display the one and only problem that it has is the thermals, they are awful in my opinion, it constanly get up to 90-100c under medium load i have resorted to just use it without boost most of the time ( performance is enouth ) and only use turbo when i really need it

I hope that your still thinking about doing the giveaway! I first became interested in the thinkpad by watching your video years ago. While I have not been able to get my hands on the t440p due to financial issues, I would like to have a chance to maybe even owning one. Hopefully you see this and make the giveaway happen.

I dream about this laptop i definetly use linux on him dwm, will be best choice i think. Now i have dilema take t14 for work and gaming 3d becouse vega 10, but i not like touch screen in any laptop. Or bay t440p and upgrade matrice from tn to ips full hd... Used price is not so high, other choice for me is still thinkpad x1 becouse have LTE modem. Then i can have network everywhere. Cheers from Poland.

The T440p was a fantastic laptop for it's time, but I wouldn't recommend purchasing one for more than $150 nowadays, especially if it's not fully upgraded. There are too many tradeoffs compared to modern laptop; The big three being battery life, performance, and weight.
One thing the T440p and all ThinkPad laptops have going for them is the fantastic keyboard and the trackpoint. I can understand not wanting to use the touchpad, but why disconnect the trackpoint? It's the best pointing device you can use on a laptop!

150$ for a fully upgraded t440p? Where? And battery life is still fine, for performance, the i7 4810mq is plenty fast even by today's standards
