Removing your Belly Button During an Abdominoplasty? Why?

  • So you went in for an abdominoplasty consultation, and the surgeon said surgery will give you a nice, flat tummy - but that your belly button will be removed. Is this normal? In fact, yes. While it is not the standard procedure, there are certain cases when removing the navel is the best choice.
Don’t let that scare you off from getting an abdominoplasty, body lift, or belt lipectomy though. Modern abdominoplasty allows surgeons to create a new belly button using your own abdominal skin. And most patients can keep their own navel - It will just likely need to be moved higher after the loose skin removal surgery is complete.
Dr. Beldholm’s patients get a beautiful belly button to go with a nice, flat tummy during abdominoplasty. Usually, the original belly button is moved upward after the excess skin is removed. This is necessary because the extra skin is trimmed away and pulled down toward the pubic bone so the tummy looks nice and slim. When that happens, the belly button gets pulled downward. This looks unnatural, so Doctor Bernard simply frees the belly button then sutures it in place higher on the abdomen, right where it should be.
In this video, Dr. Bernard Beldholm, FRACS explains two scenarios when removing the belly button during the initial surgery is needed. Then, a few months after surgery, you will come in for a second procedure to recreate the navel. The new navel looks completely natural. In some cases, it may even look better than the original belly button. There are a few other benefits to this approach. He discusses these in the video.
