- Alright, I caved and finally shot a "Worst of 2018" list for y'all!
Overall, I think 2018 was a pretty good year for country music, but I can't lie, there was definitely a ton of awfulness as well.

Finger snaps should automatically disqualify people from playing the Opry.
Like they actually give a damn about The Opry? HA!

@Dana Munos Lauren Alaina isn't ugly.

George Strait and Alan Jackson warned us about this in Murder On Music Row. Did Nashville listen? Nope
😂😂yep
Don’t forget about George Strait’s Kicked Out of Country and the lack of lots of great reals songs/singers.
@@theeverything9768 huh?
Chris Crouchet was saying George and Alan warned us about the steep decline in the quality of country music Nashville is producing and I was adding that George Strait along with Jamey Johnson also put out a song (Kicked Out of Country) that warned us of the decline in great country singers on the radio in addition to the decline of good country music.
@@theeverything9768 correct sir! lol
It’s so Simple... Listen to Cody Johnson, Luke Combs and Midland.
EMPHASIS on Cody Johnson. “Cowboy Like Me” is the most underrated country album.
LUKE COMBS YES HE IS THE #1 BEST OF COUNTRY SINGERS
Eh. That’s the “go to” for real country..but they are definitely BORDERLINE for real country. Like and Cody especially. They push the limits
Sam Riggs!!!! A lot like Cody Johnson, some of Dustin Lynch (not his radio shit. He has good music).
BigBassBenda Cody Johnson is my man!!!! I love him 💗💗😝
If I listen to country it's all old country. Or Chris Stapleton.
@SnOOPY Rages Yeah I mean, I like a few "new artists" I guess you could say. I enjoy some of Keith Urban's stuff, Brad Paisley, Toby Keith, Blake Shelton and a few others. What I really don't like is this new wave of idiots who come out there in skinny jeans and basically rap with a twang to a shitty beat and call it country.
HeyThatsAlex GaNg same!
Chris Stapleton ain’t nothing, listen to Luke Combs he’s much better
YES! i love chris stapleton. and like combs. the best!
@HeyThatsAlex GaNg blake Shelton become a sell out, young blake was good
I'm a metalhead wtf am I doing here
I am too. I can just appreciate a guy criticizing country music rather than just going "hurr durr country sux".
Same! 😂 I don’t know ow what I am doing with my life
I am a weird anomaly I think because I love metal and country, particularly outlaw country and Americana. This pop-country bullshit is horrible. If I wanted to listen to pop I’d listen to actual pop and there is some pretty catchy real pop but it is done better. Pop-country/tractor rap is like a worse version of pop music.
Hail meshuggah!

Dear Nashville, please watch this video and take some notes.
Ya but money though
@@roblobster10 Good point. If I could make a living by churning out reconstituted ham, I'd probably do it too.
The last time Nashville got this bad, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings came along and led a great revival of real country music.
Listen to Texas country problem solved
I agree accept for Hanging on!!
LGPnJR8788 ya I agree
I LOVE when Vin Diesel sings. He isn't good at it but he enjoys it so much and many of us sing badly in our car or shower. Nice to see someone do it badly and enjoy it. Makes the others feel better.
He also isn't charging money and pretending to be a musician.
Who else misses 90s style country music? Country songs had a great Melody that actually felt country. Two artists I really miss hearing are George Strait and Gary Allan.
Should've been a cowboy-toby keith
The 90s was the BEST ever for country music. Had the best songwriting, best vocals, best instrumentals, everything. Would love to see a WHOLESALE return to something similar,, see it in some with Midland, Randall King and Jon Pardi,, but need a ton more to get radio to play these guys and others.
Grady Dunkin Gary Allan should have an album coming out this year. I’m very excited for it if it really does come to be.
@@USMFAN1996 that would be awesome; although, I doubt it would get airtime on radio stations
Grady Dunkin what I especially loved about Gary Allan is that his songs had a soft rock tone
Red Dirt country where it's at ..steel pedal... mandolin.. accordion.. fiddle.. banjo got to have some of that
I agree with most and respect your opinion, but when someone like Chris Young does something a little different, I don’t understand why people rip him up. Respect the fluctuations within a genre. That’s like making a video of Queen midway through their career and complaining about their style. Not comparing Chris Young to Queen but you get the point. Let the man live and explore his voice
I'm so grateful for your channel. I never bothered even trying to listen to country music before because I had this idea that I would never like it, but listening to you talk about it with a critical lens has really opened up my mind and I actually enjoy a lot of country now, so thank you :)
Josh turner still holds a classic country meaning
Had to put on some Dolly Parton to cleanse myself of these dumpster fires you call "songs"
Dumpster fires? I may be stealing that. Thanks
Eric Warnock people use that term for NFL teams all the time.
In fact, I’m still surprised Tom Coughlin, David Caldwell, and Doug Marrone still have jobs. The team was a dumpster fire.
Truth be told, I’d rather listen to Coughlin try to sing country than Mason Ramsey, or maybe Bortles could try to sing country. Might be a better singer than Quarterback.
Love me some Patsy Cline as well.
lucy lu You have taste, I like you. You may like The White Stripes take on Jolene.
Holy crap, you aren't kidding, I put on some Hank sr.
I would love to listen to your Spotify playlist.
I stubbled upon your videos and become an instant subscriber. Really enjoy your stuff
I'm not a fan of country, but I can recognize good music when I hear it and I understand why people like country.
I admit I have a lot of 90's/00's country songs memorized.
My bus driver in high school installed satellite radio on her bus so she could listen to 70's country. I was glad when my mother got me a CD player, but there will always be a special place in my heart for old school country.
I've always thought the "pop country" movement was taking the most milquetoast, bland parts of both pop and country and mixing them together.
I think it's spelled milquetoast
@@maxwellbarnhart1375 You're right. Thanks
MrC0MPUT3R Thank God for bus drivers playing old school country.
MrC0MPUT3R 💖💖

If you have to keep saying how country you are in a song then you aren't
Joe F lmao so true
That's a Craig Campbell song
Eh that's iffy country boy can survive is the fuckin theme song lol
OH man, that's exactly my thoughts put into words. Why didn't I think of that, great quote.
What about David Allan Coe when he sang If That Ain't Country?
Cowboys and angels was a GREAT song by d.lynch. wish he would go back to stuff like that. Good girl is such a cheap song
It's impossible to believe those two songs are by the same singer! Cowboys and angels is a blessing💖💖 Good girl is just not quite country...
Cowboys and angels is great, his other songs are crap
It’s is the “Baby”of country music.
Damn this dude said everything I wanted to say - but didn’t know how.
Murder On Music Row continues to be more relevant.
The songwriting of today is as shallow as it gets. What happened to songs that tugged at your heart strings, that had emotion, that I don't know…TOLD A STORY??? Country music has been reduced to a mindless chorus of snap tracks, clap tracks, and pop wanna be's. It's good to hear a voice of clarity from the younger folks, thanks Grady!
Preach brother. It is disgusting what they're doing to the country genre right now. There's no soul or passion in country anymore, makes me cry. I'm Latvian by the way, and I have huge respect for American classics.
Songwriters are still writing great songs, but radio won't play them.
Check out Colter Wall and Tyler Childers
@@10bbremer yes they are. A&R executives won't allow them to be produced. Many great songs are collecting dust at publishing companies because they don't fit todays pop country cookie cutter sound. I compare what's happening to country music to what has happened to NASCAR racing. They are abandoning the core fans.
Yo sick summary of the "This beat is killing country music" video that came out 3 weeks ago.

Allen Jackson's song, 'He's Gone Country' comes to mind when I hear 'modern' country. 'Yeah, here he comes, look at them boots.'
I always thought that was a cheesy song. Not much of an AJ fan myself but that's sacrilege to many folk.

Great video and well spoken. Haven’t seen much of your videos yet but after seeing this one I’m definitely subscribing. I feel like you actually have all these songs a realistic chance before bashing anything. You seem like you are a fair judgement of what country music should be and and criticize these songs appropriately. Keep it up and I’ll look forward to seeing your videos pop up on my feed.
i was avoiding watching this for so long because i didn't want to see music i liked on here but i'm in the clear lol
dustin lynch and chris young could do such amazing things with their voices. its sad to see them waste it on terrible songs. im hoping 2019 is a game changer for country radio in general. Also if you want to check out some more texas country i recommend Casey Donahew band. their songs kinda remind you of brad paisley's funny songs back in the day lol.
Kenzie Carr Casey is awesome! Also check out turnpike troubadours, randy Rodgers, josh abbot, and Cody jinks.
"lol" is pedophile predator verbiage
Yes! Casey Donahew Band and the Josh Abbott Band.
Chris Young is really disappointing. His last album was awful outside of 3 songs.
Kenzie Carr brad paisley was a corporate tool
I know you dont wanna seem like a jerk and be too critical of modern country, but we need people like you to call out these "country artists". This plague on the genre of country wont stop if people dont speak up.
PREACH it!
Why do we "need" it? It's music you either like it or you dont..
There is no modern country, only pop music with a light country twang.
@@deliriouswhome1 I don't. And i don't consider it music. It's noise that attempts to be music. I feel the same way about it as everyone who loves pop music would feel if pop decided to go death metal.
@@whocares110 that's just sad to know your label of what's music is so narrowed..its music no matter you like it or not. You know it’s sad that the soundtrack for A Star is Born is more country than all the songs you listed here. And most of them were written and sung by Lady Gaga.
I think that's because they wanted Jackson Maine to have a country rock/blues rock background, I would say Aly (Gaga) pre pop sell out was more MOR Westcoast, country or not The Shallow and Always Remember Us This Way made a pleasant change from the snap tracks and autotune that dominate mainstream UK radio
Lady gaga is a music and lyric genius
Gaga's songs from the Joanne album had more country in it and it was still heavily rock and pop-influenced work.

The 808 clap is killing country. You nailed it right on the head in a previous video. Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, etc. should just stay away from country and just do pop because that’s what literally all their songs sound like.
Luke Combs and Khris Stapleton are the ones that are keeping country alive.
Chris Stapleton
Midland, Jon Pardi and Brad Paisley
Nick well if u think about it this way, Luke Bryan etc. used to have ACTUAL country music, if you listen to his first hit called all my friends say it’s much different than his songs now. Hi, Grady. I discovered your channel on my recent work trip to Tennessee, and I have been trying to mine it for good country music recs. I am mostly a metalhead, but I do appreciate good musicianship no matter the genre.
Anyway, I don't know if you take requests, but I would love to hear what you think of The Ditchrunners. They are an alt-country act from the Northwoods of Wisconsin, utilizing acoustic guitars and stand-up bass, among other instruments. My favorite track is called Cannibal Ballad, and it's about the Donner Party, I'm pretty sure.
Really don't mind Graffiti U. Definitely not country, but Keith Urban has been drifting away from country for a couple albums now and I respect that he recognizes it and is doing his thing. How Jake Owen's Jack and Diane song didn't make this list though is surprising.

Keep it up dude!!
Thanks for being the voice of those of us who love what country was and could still be.
Worst country music of 2018? Pretty much everything being played on the radio. On Christmas Eve, my wife had the radio on. I asked her what soft Rock station it was. She said "It's not. It's a country station." I said "Ummm....no. It's not."
Nothing wrong with trashing pop country, it's all bad.

As much as I LOVE Keith Urban, Graffiti U was not his best. He is a great performer, but that album I can live without.
Ludmila Fascia liked him in the early 2000s, could actually listen to a whole album. No where near country now

I'm so glad you included meant to be in this. Everytime that comes on the radio I have to change it.
I think this is why I've been mostly listening to Chris Stapleton for the last 2 years
@James Currie I get that in his more upbeat songs but through and through to me it's more country than 90% of what you hear on the radio. He listed his worst and I feel like most of the radio play sounds identical to his list, with a few outliers. Personally I can only handle so much of the macho country, girl next door, tailgate backroad stereotypical music.
@James Currie I'm not trying to convert you but have you really dug deep into his albums? Traveller is probably one of my favorite all time albums. If you haven't heard the whole thing you should check it out, let it play front to back a time or two and let me know what you think.
James Currie Eh I guess. I listen to him with my dad and always thought he sounded a bit like Chris Cornell with a twang.
He ripped off Etta James
Your gonna need more than one stand out artist to save a genre.
That’s why with country music, the only artist that makes music today that I listen to is Darius Rucker, that man makes so many good songs and they all have that traditional sound, not poppy nonsense.
Jacob Bryant, Buddy Brown, Gannon Adams, Tyler Wood, Cody Johnson, highway 55, Jake Worthington, Josh Ward
I had read your comment and thought it said 'poopy nonsense' and not 'poppy nonsense' XD. Of course, with country music like this, I think calling it crap is a nice term for it.
SkittlesScary sucked the life out of wagon wheel tho
Can’t stand Darius Rucker for what he did to Wagon Wheel
Jj Luna I personally love Wagon Wheel, but it’s understandable and perfectly okay if you don’t like the song.
I sure do miss Waylon, Cash, Marty Robbins, Conway and the rest of that era. Roy Orbison is more country than what we have today. Thanks for the good video.
ROGER MILLER
These sort of songs are one of....a couple of reasons that I don't really listen to country music anymore. Kinda started losing me in the early 2000s but then this newest wave of pop country started and...yeah no.
That said, I'm thrilled there are at least some artists worth listening to in the genre....even if they never play on country radio. After picking up A Sailor's Guide to Earth on a whim some time last year, Sturgill Simpson became one of my favorite artists overall. His other albums are every bit as good too, to the point where I don't think there's a bad song across all three of them. Really do hope we get some kind of resurgence of better country music soon, because I don't think I can stand hearing "Meant to Be" one more time.
Chris Young’s Hanging on is a great song imo, but i do agree with the rest of the list.
Listen to Ryan upchurch who is a single artist who has made it to the big leagues. Someone you guys probably have heard of. He raps. Does rock, country, name it and he does it. He's his own person. He does what he wants and it's amazing. I also like Chris stapleton, Cody jinks and classics like Alan Jackson. George strait and more.

There is great country music coming out of Nashville, it just isn't coming from the major labels.
I highly recommend checking out Turnpike Troubadours, Ryan Bingham, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Jason Isbell, Corb Lund, Hayes Carl, and Sturgill Simpson. That should at least start you down the rabbit hole of what good modern country music should be.

I know myself personally don’t think pop should be mixed with country. Pop is great alone and country is great alone. They’re no good together, I’ve yet to see it anyway
Country influenced by soul, rock, folk, and blues works. Pop and hip-hop influences just water it down to fit in the mainstream.
Same with rap country.
Ricky Connelley this is why I listen to Home Free... an a capella group that does mostly country. They even have singles like Timeless that bring back the feel of 90s country.
Eddie Arnold- some big pop hits. Patsy Cline scored big on the pop charts. Country or not?
Time to mix country and metal! Wait, that's Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster
You should do a video on The Dead South (specifically: hell I'll be in good company)
I don't like country music much at all but I just watched like 3 of your videos back to back cause I enjoy the commentary
Back porch is definitely Back there. Please never sing that song on the front porch. Or anywhere else for that matter.....
Well said my dude
And I completely agree with the Chris Young one, I looked up his older stuff and it is awesome, but now it's just like pop with a touch of country. His "Raised on Country" is a little better than his more recent stuff, it's much more close to country, but not nearly as much as he used to be with like "You" and "Tomorrow".
And I can't tell you how much I hate Dustin Lynch's "Good Girl" like dear lord and his "I'd be Jealous too" uggggghhhhhhh nooooooo
I can't stand good girl terrible song with grammatically bad and repetitive writing. The chorus lyrics make no sense, and he's talking about random stuff like the neon lights. I'd be jealous too was a flop. His second album stuff is good like where it's at, hell of a night, mind reader. Small Town Boy was okay when it was first out, but it getting over played and having to listen to him rap and beatbox and the guitar solo kind of ruined it for me.
Sophia, what don't you like about Good Girl?
Good girl is horrible. It’s way too overplayed
@@whitneypaige2038 Same with Meant to be. Good Girl should be taken off the radio. A terrible song.
Andrew Truckenmiller the same with “speechless” and “This is it. “
I'm sad they made a song about nineties country that doesn't actually pay homage to the era or the genre. Early nineties was when I became immersed in country, and had the privilege of seeing a lot of shows. I even got invited to attend a private party for a band that was among the hottest up and comers in the business at the time, and that was among the most fun times of my life up to that point.
Done right and done well, a song about nineties country, and what it meant to its fans, would be amazing. 💕
That light flare is the ghost of country music past having a heart attack at the garbage coming out of Nashville
Please review Mike Ryan’s Blink You’ll Miss It album!!
I've seen him twice live. He's awesome!
Album is amazing!
If people want more of a story teller musician go listen to Jim Croce!
Wow, I didn't even hear the majority of these songs and for that I am truly grateful!
Dang bro. Right on. I feel the exact same! Awesome reviews! Remember pull out radios? Music was good back then. Today I would’ve pulled it out and threw it out the window somewhere.
