That is exactly Trump's M.O, he has been lying, not paying his contractors and staff for his entire life.
He is so practiced that his bullshit just slides into place. He has never faced any consequences for his illegal activities; the business partners know he is lying, but they play to his ego if they want something, then wait to do actual business with the lawyers. Trump couldn't do a good deal if his life depended on it!!
I think Trump thought he could do the same thing with the presidency, though I have never believed he wanted the job, he loved the adulation from his audience with them repeating the words to the classics "who is going to pay for the wall?"

Trump was a rock star in his mind, that's why he continues to have his rallies. His staff organise them when Trump is grumpy.
The thing that really bothers me are his fans who won't admit they were wrong.
Some of them are completely indoctrinated, they watch Fox News, believe what a preacher says, never question a book which claims a god, with only a book as evidence for that god.
Then there are those who know they have been conned, but are too scared to say it. Pride is a terrible thing, they don't want to say that they were manipulated, scared to be seen as gullible, though others who they think will judge them, would be impressed. It's a strong person who learns from their mistakes. Anyone who mocks them is an asshole.
It's those who wake up, dust themselves off, move on, get involved, those are the ones who change the country.

Don't get me wrong, I love the DACA kids and it would be a great tragedy if the 800k of them got deported. But there's a higher principle at stake. Having no wall go up will break the spirits of Trump supporters so they can begin to realize all his other promises are fake, as well.
