" I was absolutely mesmerized by this, so much so that I stopped what I was doing and just listened hard, absorbing it all in. Quite exquisite!"
The Art Music Lounge
NOTES:
Inspired by Alfonsina Storni’s poem “Me at the Bottom of the Sea” the music takes on a whole new meaning when we know she ended her own life drowning herself in the ocean. The music begins as a lighthearted Andean dance, but when the trio submerges, the piece becomes a dramatic narrative of wonder mixed with an almost existential loneliness. The harp uses unusual extended techniques, some stemming from Paraguayan harp playing. The viola adds a rhythmic edge by playing constant multiple stop pizzicati imitating a Charango. The flute is the Quena of the ensemble and it uses often extended techniques as well. “In my interpretation of Storni’s poem this underwater world is that special place of isolation where many artists withdraw to create, a place and mood that can easily turn into depression. A place that ultimately Alfonsina chose to remain and which became her death.
"a masterpiece" - David Wallace, violist
"Incredibly creative and accessible music" - April Clayton, flutist
"Submerged pushes the boundaries of each instrument in the trio. It is full of beautiful melodies and exciting rhythms. The harp part is challenging and exciting and allows the performer to explores many different techniques, sounds and timbres.” - Kristi Shade, harpist

Yo en el fondo del mar from Mundo de siete pozos (1934)
Storni, Alfonsina ( 1892 - 1937 )
Published by Tor, Buenos Aires (1935)
En el fondo del mar
hay una casa
de cristal.
A una avenida
de madréporas
da.
Un gran pez de oro,
a las cinco,
me viene a saludar.
Me trae
un rojo ramo
de flores de coral.
Duermo en una cama
un poco más azul
que el mar.
Un pulpo
me hace guiños
a través del cristal.
En el bosque verde
que me circunda
-din don…din dan…-
se balancean y cantan
las sirenas
de nácar verdemar.
Y sobre mi cabeza
arden, en el crepúsculo,
las erizadas puntas del mar.
Me at the Bottom of the Sea
Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938)
(from World of Seven Wells, 1934)
At the bottom of the sea
there is a house
made of glass,
at the edge
of a coral-lined
road.
A big golden fish
comes to greet me
at five;
it brings me
a red bouquet
of coral as flowers.
I sleep on a bed
somewhat bluer
than the sea.
An octopus
now winks at me
through the glass.
In the green forest
that surrounds me
swaying mermaids sing
-ding, dong … ding, ding-
in their nacre and aquamarine.
And above my head
glow in the twilight
the prickling pins of the sea.

Thanks Daniel!
fantastic music and wonderful recording! bravo!
Thanks Andres!
This is one of the most wonderful pieces to be recently composed for flute/viola/harp trios and my trio, Beau Soir Ensemble cannot wait to have the privilege of performing this piece. Thank you Miguel for such an exciting piece!
Wow. I'm speechless. So creative and beautiful I love this and resonate deeply. Amazing work
The Hat Trick performers names are credited on the video and here on the information section. In case you are wondering who these three amazing musicians are: April Clayton, flute - Kristi Shade, harp - David Wallace, viola
Such a moving, visual interpretation of Storni’s Yo en el Fondo del Mar. From the Andean dances to the harp’s interpretative undersea world of dancing light, swirling seagrass, and the passing of time while she holds her breath, this piece masterfully brings to life her beautiful and ultimately tragic adoration of the sea. Amazing!
Thanks Jim! Glad you enjoyed the music which is so well performed by Hat Trick trio.
BEAUTIFUL & HAUNTING.
Thanks Tom, glad you liked
I love this piece!
Interesting and emotionally diverse music-the poetry is beautiful. Wonderful piece!
Dear Maestro, I just returned from a concert in Casey, a suburbian town an hour from Melb. This sublime piece was performed by Chrysalis Trio alongside Debussy, Ravel and Rameau's-. The trio did justice to your piece to the delight of all the audience,-an enchanting evening. I have no doubt the trio will make its mark in Australia and later abroad. I knew Katie Yap the violist and met her two colleagues. They were all so surprised I knew you. How small is the music world. With my utmost esteem and sincerest wishes. Saludos!
Thank you Peter, glad you enjoyed it

Writing pieces ~9 minutes long seems difficult. I have written up to 5-6 minutes of music before, so it should be fine right?
yes
