  • "Sister Act" composer, Alan Menken, performs "Pink Fish," which he wrote for the late David Sommers in the early 80's. The lyrics are by Menken too.
This is a preview of Theater Talk's 2-episode interview with Menken at the piano, which premieres Friday, July 9 on PBS/Thirteen at 12:30.

I love this song so much. It's one of the best songs Alan wrote, it's funny, AND it's to the point. Let this be a lesson to all songwriters in the theatre: When you're writing a song for a specific actor/actress, whether standalone, or as part of a show, there's so many things to talk about to help you get started. Stories, vocal ranges/styles, whatever... You never know what's gonna come out from just a little brainstorming!

God bless Alan Menken. His music is as flawlessly structured as Beethoven, as effortless as Mozart, as dramatically apt to any situation as Handel, as melodic as Schubert, and as catchy as the Beatles. While he’s not a singer, his performances exhibit consummate musical and dramatic nuance. The greatest musical achievements in the final decade of the 20th century were not in music but in film. With the scores for Edward Scissorhands and Batman, Hook, Schindler’s List, and Jurassic Park, and Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, Elfman, Williams, and Menken formed what may be dubbed the “High Hollywood School”. His lyrics are clear and witty too.
