  • Hey Laowinners!
A lot of speculation is surrounding the dear leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. There is a lot of talk about what would happen after his death, and I am here to tell you, a China takeover will happen, but not a military one.

With that let's say China with U.S and international pressure the people rise up after being inspired by Hong Kong, China collapses sometime mid- late decade so what do you think will happen after that? U.S occupation? Civil War? Taiwan annexation? Just wondering, thx

You have to also consider that South Korea would be emotionally in favor of taking over or bringing North Korea back into a South Korean-led nation, but on a rational level they want nothing to do with the huge costs of bringing the North up to anything like the same level of infrastructure and economy that the South has. So what the South really wants is for the North to leave them alone and let families talk to eachother across the border.

I have never been to mainland China, but I have visited awesome Taiwan, the preserver of traditional Chinese culture and values, six times, most recently this year in January and February. Yes, the question about whether a mainland Chinese takeover of North Korea is good or bad, is a really double edged question. I agree, that in 2008, it would have been far more desirable than now. When something breaks, they stick something else on next to it instead of doing proper repairs. This way, a Russian ship appeared to outgun the USA, but in reality they had fqr less firepower since most of it was in disrepair. For anyone curious, I think this is what he meant about soviets faking their strength. Btw I am an American, my father was in the US navy. My name is in russian since it's my 2nd language.

Laowhy86, thanks for the great video as always. As a Korean Chinese grown up in Yanji, there is one thing I disagree with you, most of us have identity cirsis but interestingly no one see North Korea as our identity. School kids no.1 topic is S.Korean idol, moms are watching S.Korean dramas and elders start a day with KBS News(S. Korean News). And as u may find from those Tiktok videos, you can hardly find any Korean Chinese doing those underground trade, even though our first language is Korean. I would say we are more liberal or less brainwashed than local Chinese.
But yeah, I strongly agree that CCP don't do it militarily but instead through business and infrastructure, and we Korean Chinese are very likely to be utilized by CCP as Cultural power.

    • @hendrickx88

I only lived in Yanji for two years, but I definitely agree. The Korean Chinese definitely have a unique perspective that is not Han Chinese, North Korean, or South Korean. I found that place to usually be very warm and welcoming. And since I’m from a border city myself, I found a lot of surprising similarities that reminded me of my hometown.
I definitely agree that probably a firmer version of “soft power” will be the way the CCP approaches NK in the future. Trying to do this economically would make the most sense. I do however wonder how the CCP will motivate Korean Chinese to facilitate that, since so many seem to be going to SK for better economic opportunities.

General MacArthur was correct. Mao would never have risked sending his armies over the Yalu if there was the good chance those bridges would be bombed and the logistics sanctuary points and airbases on the Chinese side attacked. Since Mac was under orders not to do that -- and that order was undoubtedly leaked, probably by the British or the U.S. State Department spies -- Mao knew that he could send in waves of Chinese cannon fodder as reinforcements with no risk of them being cut off.

I just stumbled upon this video, and it was very interesting. We can never really be sure what would happen in this situation until/if it happens, but I definitely see and agree on most of your points with China most likely taking control. I think the presidency of the US would have a large impact on whether or not South Korea would intervene. I've been living here for the past 5 years, and society wise, they have all been taught to want reunification, and have all said that to me in discussions i've had with different people. But like you said, government wise, they may not want to because of the economic effect. But with Moon-Jae-In as their current president, he is more apathetic to the North than more conservative parties here. Another issue with China taking over North Korea, is that they would probably inevitably try to take away their cultural heritage and language in the future. Like discussed with the treatment of the Ughurs and other minority groups in China, they would probably implement strict changes for the North Koreans as well, and depending on the time frame, could see resistance with that, since older Koreans experienced Japanese occupation, and were continuously taught to hate the oppression from a foreign country. Also, there is a lot of South Korean media making its way into the north through the black market, and many North Koreans know that the south is well off through things like Korean Dramas smuggled in, Many north Korean defectors have said in interviews and such, that they know more than they let on. Should be interesting to see what happens if anything comes of this. Definitely a unique situation in the world.

regarding west and east germany and their different educational level: this is simply not true. east germanys level of education was very high, up to the point, that they had the east european IT, of course with a lot of espionage in the west. Search for VEB Robotron, they essentially cloned x86 CPUs, floppy disk drives and much more.
There have been lots of other problems, but the education wasn't one.
One major roadblock was obviously, that eastern germans had as their first and most of the times only foreign language russian, not english.

This is why all North Koreans are trying to defect to South Korea if they could. 3. And yes, North Koreans do know they are automatically ROK citizens if they manage to reach Korean embassy. 4. Accordingly, North Korea as state doesn't exist in ROK, it's merely an ROK territory currently under occupation by Communist rebels. 5. Any Chinese incursion into North Korea is considered an invasion into the ROK itself and this triggers an automatic war with the ROK, Chinese know this. 6. The PLA absolutely doesn't want to fight the ROK military, the only military in Asia able to decisively crush PLA ground forces. 7. This is why Yellow Sea is so quiet relative to East China Sea and South China Sea, China doesn't want to trigger the ROK.
