Logic in Late Ancient Philosophy

- Previously we outlined Aristotle's enormous contributions in establishing logic as a formal field of inquiry. So what happened after that? How did the minds that followed, many directly in his lineage, develop this field further? What is meant my modus ponens and modus tollens, or the master argument, or Agrippa's trilemma, or the five indemonstrables? Let's take a look now!

Appreciate you doing this series. I personally think that Ethics, Epistemology, Logic, Rhetoric & all other aspects of Reasoned Thought ought to be foundational courses taught from primary school to university.
So much in our Society & Culture could be improved if people just knew how to think...

"My child? Taught how to think? 😡🤬😡🤬"

I really like your modern physics videos. Have you thought about continuing it, maybe to include topics like perturbation theory?
he has a chemistry background that might be difficult
@ikilledaman - is it mathematicians vs physicists, or chemist vs physicists who are forever at odds. It’s been a long time for me, I don’t rightly remember. Maybe it’s both.
Well, his modern physics videos are written by different people. Perhaps someone can write a script about perturbation theory or quantum field theory.
Ancient history amazes me so much. We are literally learning about the history of knowledge. We are only a few thousand years from just being trained monkeys. And some of us haven’t made the leap yet….
U were a monkey? How was it?
@@Percules15 It's better in the Americas where we have prehensile tails.
@@Percules15 I miss having a tail to play with when bored.
It may even be cliche now, but my favorite writings are from Seneca and Marcus Aurelius. Good students of stoic philosophy, and the value they put on life was only surmounted by the respect they had for death. Perspective.
"There are, in fact, two things, science, and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the latter ignorance." Hippocrates
Logical induction is superior to that of empirical induction, but it still needs empirical induction to validate its self-deterministic function. Ignorance can save your life sometimes, and science can weaponize information. An intelligent physicist can build a nuclear weapon, but an intelligent physicist who’s wise knows not to build it in the first place.
Seeing this video on logic, I’d be interested in seeing you make a video on Christopher Langan’s theory, The Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe (CTMU).
Well done.
I enjoy the quick pace. I can't argue with it. But perhaps moreso in the case of this topic than in others he presents it speeds too fast, spouting words/phrase quickly without any time to assimilate or understand them. Frankly, that's probably the general criticism I would have of everything that "Dave Explains." It more like parents who teach their children to parrot and look smart, rather than to apprehend and be able to think, independently. This isn't a criticism or down-vote of Dave Explains. It definitely has a unique place. And I suppose I have to accept that fact. But it also does leave much to be desired, as well. But on this topic which is more abstract than say geology, it is still more vital to get the ideas across more clearly. I've watched many of Dave Explains on a variety of topics (yes, I like the works) but it is here, on this topic more than the rest, that I feel the lacks in the approach more fully than elsewhere. But again, I'm just criticizing and not creating. So I've no place to really complain. Just saying, is all.
I LOVE your vids yo. I learn sooooooo much!
Isn't there a mistake at 8:19 ?
In a disjunction (or) when both variables are true, the disjunction is true.
So the fourth point seems incorrect. One cannot deduce from the premises that "P or Q" and "P" that "not Q" is true, since both P and Q could be true...
It looks like 4 is incorrect, but it would be correct if it is an exclusive or (XOR) instead of an inclusive one (OR). But in that case, it is the same as the 3rd point... Which is already a XOR...
Could you please debunk Dr Joe Dispenza ideas on science and quantum physics. Everyone seems to believe him and I think this would help science massively
Modus Regressum: If you make more videos, I will come back and watch them. You continue to make Videos, Therefore I will be back :)
What about a limited regress that ends in something one pretty much cannot help but believe? Is that a form of foundationism.
Please explain Aristotelian and non Aristotelian logic with examples in some video
Can you make a video about velocity ratio?
after i went myself down this rabbit hole, the only thing i came back with was this. "A thing once true, was always once true..." I have never advanced beyond this hyperbole ... i finally gave up. lol
***people commenting on a video that hasn’t been out long enough to watch for full duration😂
I only comment for the algorithm, so no need to finish the video first.
I would like to see an video about so called "free energy "
Hello Dave; there have been a bevy of new videos on the subject matter of the magnetic pole shift from guests on the JRE, to Suspicious0bservers, and while it appears to be more fear-for-profit clickbait, I wondered if you had any scientific insight on the subject beyond your video from two years ago.
*puts a AND & XOR gate with 2 electron current* calls it a binary half adder
All philosophy is reducible to natural science.
Metaphysics: all natural and physical sciences.
Logic: mathematics.
Epistemology: information theory and evolutionary psychology.
Ethics: logic, information theory, and evolutionary psychology.
Politics: evolutionary anthropology, biology, and psychology.
Aesthetics: evolutionary psychology.
Good Philosophy reflects Existence, the practicality and repeatability of patterns in existence are then studied.
Bad Philosophy writes stories and tries to convince people the stories are real. Bad Philosophy is also known as Religion.
oh my god, what? this might actually be the worst take ive seen on this website
I want to understand this so bad but almost everything went above my head 😢😅
Sleep on small portions of anything complex you're learning at a time- and if you can study yourself to sleep, it can really help retention and allow for a more thorough learning of said subject.
