Thanks for watching! Are you: A) and accountant B) a bookkeeper C) a small business owner or D) other? Let me know in the comments!
Great explanation, thanks! - Let me tell you, I am from Dominican Republic and I work for a company based out of Miami, FL. At my job doing bookKeeeping is one my tasks, I've doing it for more than 3 years now, I do it with Quickbooks online, and I want to ask you, what do I need to start my own company to offer bookkeeping services from my country to USA customers?
@FinePoints could you make a video about company size (small, medium high) criteria and how much did you charge for every size. For example small business has transactions about 100 to 500 per month, etc. Thanks
C
How to contact you? Watching almost daily your videos.. I have some questions, can you please help out me ?

I’m 18 fresh out of high school and these videos are helping me a TON!! I’ve always loved working with business financials as I owned my own business in high school and LOVED doing all the expense spreadsheets myself, thinking this could be a very good potential career for myself. Thank you for all the helpful videos! :)
I am so encouraged by just reading your post. Don't spend ridiculous amounts on college. go to University of The People, uopeople.edu. an almost free 4 year college.
You’re rad. Thank you for the awesome explanation and I was trying to figure out how to decide who to go with and there’s one company that specializes in both and he’s a small business and you just tell me understand that they’re probably my best choice because they have both angles
Wow, what a great video, this is very useful information. I'm looking to get a very high level overview on what bookeeping is all about and the videos on your channel look like the perfect resource.
I needed this! Thank you so much! I was definitely underpaid working for an employer in doing all of those tasks. I am so excited to get certified and start my business. Thank you Morgan!
love your vids morgan! thanks so much for all the info and esp your pleasant nature. keep posting!
Great information thank you for putting it in easy mode for us. Also, your voice is very soothing I was dozing off kind of asmr-ish
No prob! Haha, thanks.
Well said. Morgan you've helped motive me to start my own bookkeeping business! Thank you.
You're so welcome!
Thanx a lot, I am an ASPIRING bookkeeper from the Philippines, I am learning a LOT from your video.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for this! Super informative. I'm starting out in the field and your video just clarified so much! I can't wait to get the ball rolling :)
I had been looking for these particular information, thank you for the outline !
You are so welcome!
I am so excited that your channel exists! I have worked as an accounting clerk for almost 7 years and I am getting my associates in Accounting. I have been trying to find a path so that I can have more flexibility for my kids. I think bookkeeping would be a great fit. I am going to keep checking out your channel to learn more. Thanks for the great content!
Yay! Glad to have you. Let me know if there are any specific questions you have, or videos that would be helpful.
Thanks for this outline, very simply put! 💪🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow... this was super helpful. Been confused about the details of each for ages 😆
I have an absolute love for the financial sector and recently I figured out that the labor department of Rhode Island is going to pay for a bookkeeping course in these videos are helpful and knowing what I'm going to be prepare myself for thank you for making these videos❤❤❤🎉
your just a ray of sunshine 🤗
I love your videos I have an interview coming up ... so nervous 😬 😩😩😩😀😀😀😀🥰🥰🥰 THANK YOU ! I’m going to share this video
That's a great explanation of the difference.
A) Good video. I’m an Enrolled Agent and working toward my CPA. I think more small businesses need bookkeepers to help them keep organized.
I agree 100% :)
Just one thing to add. The vast majority of accounting grads do not become CPAs. In fact only about a third of all grads become a CPA. Only a third of all working accountants are CPAs.
Love your moto at the beginning!
Thanks! :)
Thank you for your nice video. I am a Bookkeeper from Bangladesh. Your video boost me to enjoy the bookkeeping
I just subscribed to your channel and this information was very helpful as I am looking to start a bookkeeping career.
love the video! im currently a HT and looking to step outside of retail banking and thinking about heading to bookeeping
Yes! Such a good transition. Let me know if there are any videos you'd like to see!

Helpful video 💯
very helpful - thanks!
Nice information, high quality.
Thanks! :)
I’m so intrigued. I want to be a book keeper!
Hello, Miss Morgan. My name is Rickey. I have just watched your video about the difference between a Bookkeeper and an Accountant. Right now, I have my own Bookkeeping and Accounting business. I just consider myself a Bookkeeper as well as an Accounting Clerk.
I think the video, I saw, was very explanatory, and I think I understand it well.
I would like more advice from you about this, and look forward to seeing more of your upcoming videos, concerning this, whenever possible. Please let me hear from you if possible. I would like to know more. Thank you for your time and consideration. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Rickey! I appreciate the support!
You're welcome.
Thank you so much. Now I know the difference 😃
You're welcome 😊
Great info. Thanks. Cathy & Harry
Thank you for your informative videos, I always find them while researching. Planning to start a business in the next year: I can manage my finances/bills/etc (if I need to.); but I don't need the added weight of remembering when to file x tax forms, which 1099 form to file for x number of contractors, etc. I want to comply with the irs ( ;P rather avoid the penalties) but I want to focus on running my business, who would I need to make sure I'm compliant with irs documentations and information for me to do taxes?
Hi Morgan! I was wondering if you could do a video on marketing AND how to gain experience while we are going through COVID-19?
Great info
I think she is more talking about a CPA. A non-CPA accountant handles more general ledger entries in a larger business.
So I have many years experience as a retail bookkeeper for a grocery store. Any tips you can give on how to help make the transition from retail to professional bookkeeping job position? I’m trying to present my resume to show that I can handle the professional side too. Thank you :) 🙏
At the moment i'm working toward an associates in accounting... deciding whether I should move toward a bachelors in accounting or start leaning into being a Book Keeper
Hi there! I am loving all of your video as and I am inspired to start my own bookkeeping business. I would like to see a video on how to set bookkeeping prices and if hourly, how do you keep track and provide the accurate amount of time spent to the client to pay. I hope that makes sense! Thanks in advance!
Hi Tiffany! Great questions! I can add these to my list for future videos, but the short version... I think that $35-40/hour is a reasonable rate to charge in most areas in the U.S. I use the hour tracking function in QuickBooks to track my hours. After I complete work for a client, I can enter the hours I worked and assign it to a client. Then, at the end of the month I can make an invoice with all of the hours and email it to them. Hope that helps! I'm also looking to provide fixed-rate pricing for my clients--more info on that to come as I test it out. Take care!
Sounds good! Thanks!
About 6 years ago, in NYC, no experience, a small business owner offered me $9/hr to be a bookkeeper. I just walked. One of those foreign business types trying to pay all workers bare minimum. He may have been the, "I dont have your $400 this week. See me in two more weeks" types.
Hi!!
I am in accountant and currently persuing CPA license!
Hi I enjoyed this video, I own a few rentals and just purchased a laundromat and the book work is getting more involved than I like. Where are you located and how does someone find a book keeper ?
Hi Morgan! I was wondering if you could do a video on payments and papers and how you manage that. Do you get physical checks at your home or a PO Box for your clients? I have a client that does not like direct deposit or auto-pay anything, and prefers physical checks. How would you handle that and all of the paperwork from it? Thanks!
Sure! Do you mean bill pay for the clients' expenses (utilities, etc)... or how a client would pay you for your fees.
FinePoints I mean like for the client himself, for all of his expenses and bills, he doesn’t like it to be on auto-pay. He wants to pay it himself each month (never usually on time). And for his invoices he bills out, he doesn’t want the payment for it to be direct deposited into his bank account. He prefers a physical check to be deposited. He’s very old school if you can’t tell, which makes my job more difficult. Any advice would be so helpful!
Love the video! Question, how do you market to obtain clients?
Hi Tracey! Thanks for watching! That's a great idea for a video & I'll add that to my list to make. But, A LOT of my clients have been word of mouth. I let my network of family/friends know that I'm a bookkeeper and put it on social media and I was able to find clients that way. You can also post your business on job websites (like craigslist) or answer posts for "bookkeeper needed" there. CZcams is also a way that I'm able to market and gain credibility. One other idea would be to reach out to small businesses in your area and see if they are needing help. I've found that there are tons of businesses who need bookkeepers. Having a niche also can be helpful because you're more marketable and specialized (for example, as a bookkeeper for doctors... then you could approach Dr. offices). Hope that helps!
You are amazing
Thanks for your excellent video. what is the easiest way to learn quick books and sage?
Hi Santosh! Morgan recommends taking the QuickBooks ProAdvisor Course through QuickBooks Online Accountant. You can find more information on it in this video that Morgan made: czcams.com/video/xKcCrN5Sn-E/video.html..
Krista (FinePoints Assistant)
Great video!! I'm currently working as an assistant to the bookkeeper for a small non-profit organization and the bookkeeper is wanting me to take over this role. My concern is the kind of trouble I could get into if the books are not handled just right...am I protected from liability being just the bookkeeper and not the actual accountant??
Very cool! Your question is more of a legal one that I'm not really qualified to answer. :) I generally teach that you start your own business and then get Errors & Omissions insurance that's designed to protect you. If you're an employee working for a company, I would think you are covered under them. And yes, an accountant has more schooling and are held accountable at a higher level.
Hi great video! Im looking into both. You mentioned that accountants make between 150-400 an hour which is amazing but I have not found any where where they can make that much. May i ask where you found that pay range at for accountants? Thankyou so much. =)
This is for public accounting, not private accounting. People who hire accountants internally pay normal salaries which can still be quite good, but those working in public accounting charge their clients a fee per hour. I've see at the firm I work at that we charge around $200-$600 per hour based on level of experience ($200 per hour at associate, $400 at manager, $600 at partner, etc...). There are different segments to public accounting and she kind of generalized accountants as a one size fits all, but there are really a lot of specializations to get into. For starters, not all accountants are CPAs, but all CPAs are accountants. You don't need a CPA unless you are required to sign off on an audit (you don't even need one to file taxes, you can be an EA or just register with the IRS for a PTIN). You do need one for most public accounting companies if you want to be promoted to manager or above though. In public accounting, there are segments for tax, audit/assurance, and advisory. You can make around $55K starting off and make around $250k-$300k as a partner when you first get there, but some senior partners can make $1-3m per year at the biggest firms.
Great video! You only need 1 year work experience for CPA licensure.🙂
Good to know, thank you!
Most states require, in addition to Bachelors degree (120 semester hour degree) a 150 semester hour degree (ex. BMAcc or Master’s Degree in accounting or business). In addition to one year work experience, and this is important, under the direct supervision of an actively licensed CPA.
@@greekzilla2515 I know. I’m a CPA 🙂
@@tonyluke5582 It depends on the state board as to how many years you need for the CPA.
Hm... I have completed PhD level coursework in accounting and work with taxes (Enrolled Agent). I do not want to waste my time on the certification by AICPA; I am perfectly fine with my EA, running business and tax consulting practice, and assist my clients with their books...
According to your definition I am not an accountant (since I do not hold CPA designation)...
Hi, I am an Acca member, Acca is like CPA but Acca is of UK, now I am starting my career as a freelancer so I am confused should I offer my services as a bookkeeper or as an accountant? Because if I work with a CPA I will be able to learn taxation fairly very quickly
Thank you
Welcome!
Hi.Tx for the info. Does either profession do things like fill out loan forms, liaise with bankers, realtors etc.?? I want to be at the point where I can call someone and say, I found a property I want, make it happen. Does that exist. peace
Thank you for explaining it to me before I jump into bookkeeping class! Do accountants all have a bachelor's degree or can you become an accountant through a trade school?
Ideally yes. There are two types of accountants: NON CPA accountants & CPA Accountants.
Hi there Nene, u ever become a bookkeeper?
Can you guide me how I can get internship where I can do practical work. I want to learn bookkeeping. Thanks
Do you have one accountant that you provide to all your clients, or do your clients get their own accountant, and you have to work with each of these various accountants?
What schools do you suggest ?
Are you doing this full time? If not is this a business that can be done on the weekend? Typically how many hours do you spend on these tasks?
Accountant in NW Mexico. Very similar job description or the same.
Many accountants here do almost entirely bookeeping plus regular taxes (not advising or strategy).
But others continue with a tax masters or law degree wich is only 4 years with no bar exam and muuuuch lower income than in US as a consecuence)
Interesting! Thanks for sharing the similarities and differences. -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
Actually, there is a lot more certain properly trained 'tax inclined' bookkeepers can do. Including depreciation, writeoffs and even preparation with the required IRS and state certifications. I'm not sure how many CPAs even do tax preparation. Most tax preperation work is a specialization that most bookkeepers(and accountants) are indeed wise to "farm out". However, calculations, depreciation, writeoffs, and even retirement account info are something a highly skilled bookkeeper can have ready for the tax preparers.
Where do I get training ?
Most accountants I know are not tax experts. I'm going to be an accountant when I finish my bachelor's NOT a CPA. CPA in most places is generally 150 relevant credit hours ...... which is a masters and then working for a year. You do not have be be CPA to be an accountant. This kind of misinformation is why I keep seeing jobs posted for $20 an hour asking for CPA and 3+ years experience. Here is a hint most accountants won't work for that low starting off much less a CPA.
Just found your Channel, any suggestions on how to find a good part time bookkeeper?
I have a list of my recs on my website, go to "need a bookkeeper?" then about halfway down. :) www.finepoints.biz
I study accounting at CCD level I-21, know i choses to be Bookkeeping! this is right decision? where do i start?
I am an accountant that want to do the bookkeeping road 😁
Does a bookkeeper need to know accounting or as long as he/she knows how to use the software he/she can be a bookkeeper?
small business owner - I need a bookkeeper for the reasons you have stated.
If you want any suggestions, Morgan has a list of past students on her website: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14lSMVi2vnkF0xMXWCOoD06nY1Mo3l0SHCeYIXgrA56E/edit#gid=0 -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
Are you still looking for one?
3:20 yes, the main reason is that accountants have studied the theory, so they set things up to be in compliance with GAAP. Quarterly taxes are usually a thing unless the taxes owed are less than $1000. Then the IRS won't really give you a penalty.
Thank you for sharing this, it's really helpful -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
@@FinePointsBookkeeping yes, just look in the IRC. Usually the IRS will give leeway on this although it usually doesn't.
Hay quá
Hello.. good info.. I am spanish speaker, in fact I am still learning english, I did not understand 100% What you said maybe 90% ... My question is.. who must do Physical inventory? The accountant or the bookkepper? Can be done together?? Who has the responsability.?
Regards, from Nicaragua!
It’s usually done by some internal auditor function involving many accounting clerks who are available.
I am trying to decide if I want to get my Accounting Certification, associates, or bachelors. I noticed online that a lot of the jobs available for a bookkeeper require a degree. I just do not want to go into debt getting a bachelors if it is not necessary but then how do you get your foot in the door?
You don't need any official certifications to become a bookkeeping (of course, training and continued education is important). Have you seen this video about finding clients? czcams.com/video/v92DBK9dbLA/video.html -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
Hi Miss Morgan, I know accountants can do bookkeepers work as well. But do accountants like doing bookkeeping or are they willing to work with bookkeepers? Thanks.
Accountants like having a relationship with bookkeepers, but most prefer not to do the bookkeeping themselves. -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
Besides quickbooks what other softwares would you recommend?
Xero :)
Queeckbooks aren’t as common In Europe. It is Sage, in South Africa it is Pastel (bought out and renamed into Sage as well). Then they have MS Dynamics and SAP financial modules. There is litterally a multitude of smaller niche software programs created for different markets, industry and countries to suit their regulations and tax. But in a nutshell they follow similar design - logical flow as QB or Sage
This video is really misleading to the audience. Whilst you perfectly explained what kind of services might bookkeeper offer, you limited the accountant only to tax practices. There are various ares in which an accountant may specialize in such as auditing, advisory, management, taxation etc.
Its always advisable that the bookkeeping is done by a licensed CPA in order to ensure that the bookkeeping is done in line with the relevant accounting standards. When it comes to complex transactions the bookkeeper usually does not have the proper tools and the know-how to solve the problem.
True! I did focus on the accountant duties from a bookkeeper perspective (how we work together at tax time).
I think this is a valid point, but I don't agree a CPA is needed to do bookkeeping. The key is proper training and the tips Morgan is providing in this youtube series put anyone well on the way to gaining this training. Also I woudn't want the lack of a CPA certification to hinder anyonedrom starting their bookkeeping business. In short there is more than enough room for both types.
Do bookkeepers ever work for accounting firms?
I have a Associate degree in Accounting from 1995. Its so hard hard for me to find a job in that field. What courses do you recommend for me to take in order to qualify for bookkeeping jobs/? What platforms should I know and where can i learn it free.
Hi Maritza! Morgan suggests taking the QBO ProAdvisor certification course (it's FREE!). Here is a video Morgan made on where you can find it (czcams.com/video/H90PyiBJ8Kw/video.html). The course may look a little different then it does in this video due to QBO recently updating the course. If you're looking to invest in your training, Morgan really like Bookkeeper Launch. Here is a video Morgan made on why she likes this course (czcams.com/video/dUrjJy1ersw/video.html). Hope this helps!

My state has a program to pay for certificates in various in demand fields. They have bookkeeping and accounting as options, among others. After watching this and a few other videos, I'm wondering if it's even possible to get a job with an accounting certificate. It seems like that would just be step one in getting the education I'd need to get an accounting job. Whereas with a bookkeeping certificate, it looks like I could get a job immediately. Or could I get a bookkeeping job with an accounting certificate? I don't know. If you can clear up my confusion, that would be great. If not, that's fine too.
Hi Michael! Check out this video Morgan made about what type of certification you need to become a bookkeeper! czcams.com/video/RTy6ayRF6mc/video.html

Hi William! Here is a link to a blog post Morgan made that gives lots of great information on starting your bookkeeping business, as well as, her checklist!
Krista (FinePoints Assistant)
A smart move would be to obtain an EA or ASFP on top of bookkeeping work and completely limit the need for a CPA… Don’t get me wrong… learning tax is tough but a seasoned EA can and will outperform a CPA any day of the week… I call EA,s the Swiss Army knife of tax.
I noticed this video is 3 years old i dont know if you are still answering questions if you are here is my question: What do you think about someone learing bookkiping at the age of 59? do you think is worth it?
You can be an accountant without the CPA license. One just needs the 4 year finance or accounting degree and experience. Lots of accountants work for middle to big size companies with the titles: "### Accountant"
Good to know, thank you for sharing! -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
I've watched a few of your videos, and although you have good content, there is often misinformation in them. Just to clarify, what you're describing as an Accountant is actually a CPA. Put simply, a bookkeeper enters transactions. An accountant does the same as a bookkeeper, but is also qualified to produce and interpret financial reports. A CPA does the same as an accountant, but also has taxation and audit knowledge and can offer more in the way of interpreting financial data. To become an accountant, you don't need many years of schooling. You can obtain a 2 year degree (Associates) or 4 year degree (Bachelors). To become a CPA, you need more credits to qualify to sit the exams, which translates to an additional 2 years or so. Once you pass the 4 CPA exams and become licensed, THEN you need Continuing Education credits to maintain your license. This means you have to be up to date with any changes in financial laws and tax codes. Just an FYI, I've been an accountant for 20 yrs and started the journey to becoming a CPA. I hope this helps!
Hi Vanessa! Thank you for your feedback.

Hi thank you . Are you US based or UK based ?
Hi Om! Morgan is based in the US.

I am a bookkeeper
Hi
As i know, accountant can be bookepper in the same time. And junior accountant usually does job as bookepper at beginning. CMIIW 🙏
If an accountant manages how bookkeeping is set up, that mean an accountant can as well manage and perform payroll duties too
So what do you mean is bookkeepers do the finance so when taxes coming up everything is ready.
It kind of sounds like it all boils down to taxes.
Yes! I'd say getting ready for taxes (is the main, essential task) as well as giving business owners a clear picture of their finances.
I'm in it for the money, I can make what I make at my day job, in 1 hr. Instead of a day.
I’m somewhere in the middle. I’m an accounting technician...
What's an accounting technician? How is it different from an accountant and bookkeeper?
As a bookkeeper, my employer was charging over $100/hour for my work.
Right?! Isn't that crazy? Are you thinking of branching out to do some bookkeeping on your own? -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
its sounds like a bookkeeper is just a pawn compare to an accountant. is it really?
Not in the least. Both serve their own end users and both are vitally needed. While similar the roles of bookkeeper and accountant aren't the same.
bookkepper rate around $35-$80?😂Really?Why I saw a lot 顽童advertisements rate it around 15-25?
Good question! This video explains it! czcams.com/video/tm-Eo3tke0E/video.html
I'm an aspiring bookkeeper, train me and I'll do your work for $5/hr🤣🤣🤣
Morgan isn't looking to take on help at this time, but what a great idea to reach out to bookkeepers to help them for a lower cost to learn the trade! -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
