  • This video features a 360-degree perspective of the Newberry Crater (or Newberry Caldera), Newberry National Volcanic Monument (Bend area, Central Oregon, USA). This video is meant as a visual quick-reference to key topographic sites in the area.
This area features a climate that is very hot/dry in the summer, and cold/damp in the winter (often with cloudy skies). The Lava River Cave also is about 35°- to- 45° F (or 2°- to- 7° C) year round. The area may have forest fires in summer, and have snow cover well into spring/early summer. The elevation to many popular visitor areas are moderately high (about 5,000- to 8,000 feet). There are no services in most areas of Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Please come prepared for the conditions.
The Newberry National Volcanic Monument contains many sites worthwhile to visit. However, much of it is in remote areas. It is best to plan ahead because the visitor centers and other key areas of interest are seasonal. Additionally, reservations are required to visit the Lava River Cave (also bring flashlights), and to access transit to the top of Lava Butte. A national parks pass also is required. Most roads to remote areas are closed during winter, although access (by foot/skis/snowshoes) is allowed to most areas (but not inside the Lava River Cave). A camera and sensors monitor access to the Lava River Cave. Trespassing (having no reservation ticket) may result in the sheriff being called.
