    Somewhere around 25 years ago I offered to send my son to a course on making faux boulders. He was struggling with keeping a job because every place he worked moved out of the area & he didn't want to move his family. He pretty much told me I was stupid. 😕 THEN, a year or so later he told me he was shocked because the town he lived in had paid over $10,000 for a faux boulder. Martial troubles ensued, $$ trouble can add to that, then he got an offer of a temporary job in the US Virgin Islands doing carpentry work. The temporary offer turned to permanent, he accepted & now, years later he's the Captain on a luxury catamaran doing business between the USVI & Grenada. A very different life.

    Years ago I started to make faux rocks. Unfortunately many in this area didn't get the concept. I used mortar mix with 3/4" pieces of fiberglass( for strength ) over a cardboard frame. I had mesh on the bottom( so critters wouldn't make a home ). I added patina paint for coloring. I also used 'stone paint' to give it that 'sand texture' & color. I wanted them to look like granite. Where is your company? I'd love to come & visit.

      No matter what it is a person creates or makes for a dollar there’s a lot more than just the making involved to create any real success… reminds me of the old adage if it were easy everybody be doing it. Quite frankly it’s tougher now than I’ve ever seen it. Sadly I’m just south of Portland, OR by about an hour and a half.

    • @fauxrock
      @fauxrock  Před rokem

      I obtain the sheen through three methods.
      First, I either trowel out the mud out as smooth as I can get it, or in the case of the whales tail my mold produces a smooth surface.
      Secondly, I polish the surface after it is created
      Third I use sealers that give it a sheen in addition

    I just get real rocks.
    You can get a big tank of poly foam insulation. You squirt it out of a wand or spray it. Lay some fabric or fiber or mesh tape and spray the texture on real thin. Build up as needed where needed.
    That's how I would do it.

    Any videos on how you build a mold for a single rock? Not just a panel, but the entire rock and then pack it. like the first pillar in this video? You said you made a mold for the entire rock. Just wondering how that would work.

    • @fauxrock
      @fauxrock  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Well, if this point, I think of more than about 120 different rocks, large and small. I believe there’s a couple of videos on my channel. I know that there’s footage and tutorial videos on my DVD training course it’s no different than any other mold you’ve gotta have your prototype, complete ready to mold and then apply the molding rubber, make a hard mold, Demold it when dried. Then cast your rock. Thanks for watching.

    I made mine too thick. I used landscape fabric in liu of cardboard because it won't break down and was fibery. then I added chicken wire. cement ended up being about 3/8- 3/4". My five foot rock ended up being about 160 lb. I returned here and missed your crucial detail that you are doing just fiberglass with no wire
