  • Mitch sits down with Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) for a special interview here at Sweetwater. Rick was visiting Sweetwater to hold a recording workshop. Renowned as the superlative lead guitarist, backing vocalist, and primary songwriter of the legendary rock band Cheap Trick, Rick is one of rock 'n' roll's most colorful and accomplished musicians. With more than four decades of performing and recording under his belt, Rick has earned the respect and admiration of fans and A-list musicians alike. On top of that, Rick has owned about two thousand guitars over the years and now has over 400 instruments in his possession, including his famous custom-made 5-neck Hamer guitar.

    I remember walking in to Ralph Nielsen's music store back in the late 70s on a trip to Rockford for the weekend with my family. I had no idea where I was. But I got to talking with the owner... what a nice guy! At some point he says "My son's in a band too." and sends me over to the wall to look at pictures. Well you know who I saw. I nearly fell over. Definitely a memorable day!

    LOVE CT and Rick! The first CT album is one of the greatest rock albums of all-time. I first saw CT live when they were unknowns opening for Boston in 1977. They blew Boston off the stage, and they blew my mind!! Great show.

    Rick Nielson, what a unique individual. I saw Cheap Trick open for 38 Special in the summer of 83 at a place called North Star Live Stage in Mecosta Michigan. It was an old farm converted to a outdoor venue with a stage built behind a barn. My buddy and I were up front against the barrier. I could hardly hear shite for 3 days afterwards. Great memories.......Thanks Rick.

    Great interview Mitch :-) I collected stamps when I was younger. LOL Many years ago. Cheaper than guitars, sort of.

  • @dontsurroundurselfwithurself

    Surrender was the 1st song I learned in the 1st band I was in and I still cover The Flame. After all these years and many CT concerts (even scoring a few treasured guitar picks), I'm still a huge fan.

    • @truckerkevthepaidtourist
      @truckerkevthepaidtourist Před 4 lety +1

      no actually at the time Don Barnes and Jeff carlisi asked for them to open...
      this was before the pop of the flame and stuff like that from the later 80s.
      38 special with climbing and climbing and getting more popular and they wanted a group that they knew could be a greatopener and we get the crowd going and they decided to take them out on tour.
      you have to remember we're Cheap Trick was about 1983 and where Cheap Trick was too.
      it was just after the wild-eyed Southern Boys hit. this time Cheap Trick is repaying the favor. CT invited 38 as a triple bill.. was supposed to happen this year. however because a covid the Styx Cheap Trick 38 Special concert tour set for next year.
