By Robert Sheldon
Item: 00-29477
Series: Alfred Concert Band

"Flight of the Piasa" was written to depict the majesty of the legendary Piasa, an enormous winged creature, and the bravery of the Illini tribe who triumphed over its reign of terror. The discovery of the Piasa dates to 1673, when the cliff drawing painted high on the bluffs was first seen by Marquette during his famous journey down the Mississippi River. (5:10) This title is available in SmartMusic.
"'Flight of the Piasa' is a very effective piece of music that is superbly crafted by a composer who really does understand the limitations and playing capabilities of student musicians."

As a flute player, who have to play this in school orchestra next year, I want to share my last words:
Well, it wasn't easy, but I always loved the orchestra and the flute very much. This piece is so incredibly beautiful, but I'm afraid my fingers will die. ✌️🥲
Hope you are doing alright now
3:54 BEST PART I saw this played in person by my high school band (Im not there yet) I fell in love with just how God damn loud the French horns got it was amazing I wish I could relive that moment because it sounded way better in person.
Qlbie DB I couldn’t agree more! I get the chills every time we play that!
@@parvgosai Nice to know someone agrees!
Qlbie DB You should check out Pevensey Castle by Robert Sheldon, it's very similar but smaller! its really good!
www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/media-player.jsp?&type=audio&productID=2284362 this is the best recording of the song i can find
LEDgamerGirl LOL I love that one too!
Im amazed how loud the french horns played at 5:32
Rip the woodwinds though. I think the Brass has it easy.
Except for the high notes but your right
@Prico i played this for my competition and my batch was the first in our school to get a distinction
@Prico yea
@Prico like coming from a horn player who is playing this in band.
woodwinds are hard, but I'm at the percussion. I think it's a mess hahaha because I have only 2 friends and me. Myfriends hit the snare drum and the other hit the bass drum, and the rest I had to hit it alone. When someone recorded a clip So I asked to see, me was very funny, haha I ran and rannnn
Such a fun song to play. Especially for woodwinds
💀💀💀💀👍
That alto solo gave me chills.
Yes definitely
I played this at an all region concert and I had the solo. Even playing it gave me chills.
Listen to the alto sax solo in riverside overture, it’s even more chilling
I. Am. So. Speechless. This is my FAVORITE Robert Sheldon piece. Not only is it so beautiful and GRAND, but no one is left behind in this one, all the instruments contribute to the greatness to create this amazing *MASTERPIECE* ! yes you heard me, *MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!*
@Rhys Price IKR IT FRICKIN IS!!!!!!!!!!!! When listening to this right after you said that you won, I was just BRIGHT AND BUBBLY AS HELL!
@Rhys Price ayyyyye.
ok but why does every composer just throw in endless runs when they don't know what to do with the woodwinds...
I SWEAR TO GOD...THEY BE LIKE" yo um brass playing loudly ok um....I'll just throw some high sixteenth notes for the woodwinds...yeah that's good"
aurora lewis it’s cool tho
Most wind band composers are very poor orchestrators that use the same "tried and true" tricks over and over again
Maybe they did it for a reason? They are professional composers. I think they know what they are doing you know?
@@FloppityFloppify the model of a wind orchestra still is a classical symphonic orchestra....just woodwinds replacing the strings....but without such a big tonal spectrum and homogenous sound as a string section features. Thats the reason why they mostly play runs when harmonic information (mostly trombones, tuba, trumpet - signals -) and melody (horns) are already given. :)
If you don't feel something from this beautiful piece, then your not human!! It's amazingly technical and the melody is just phenomenal!! Watched my son play this in a high school honors band! Thought it was amazing!
As a horn player I love this song
Excellent horn and trombone writing!
Nice to see some bassoon appreciation
Since I play a Eb Contra-alto clarinet, I usually look at the bari sax part, it looks fairly easy.
the fat controller laughed
I play bari and I’m in my schools honors band, my part is so easy compared to the melody parts😂
Alto/Tenor Sax 1:00. only lasts a few seconds, but that small part hits hard
Was just about to comment about that interplay!!
I'm getting Star Wars vibes and Final Fantasy vibes here. Maybe Violet Evergarden's too
I recognise a bit of binary sunset here
im playing this today with my high school band for band festival!
As a French Horn 0:06 was all I needed, but they gave me more
The woodwind part is so FUN
Which one?
as someone who is practicing it rn it feels like i’m rapping 😭
this kind of sounds like winds of change by randall standridge
一開始就是繁華城市的感覺😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Flight of the Pasta
Thanks for writing this now I have to play the 16th note runs for a chair audition 😭
This is the Neo-Romantic cinematic style
Wiggle your fingers and pray as I always say
Haha love that. So true at the same time.
I almost threw my clothes in the trash and not the laundry
好聽
The low brass/ reeds at 4:50 tho
i played this for region clarinet part go bop 👍
太棒了
真棒
Really powerful. Played the timpani part and besides the timpani solo, the part was rather boring. But a really good piece with an awesome ending
Horns: ah um cool, starting off strong right away, no problemo
That's how the Trumpets and Trombones are, definitely. They can't be anything but loud. 😁🤣
FIGHT OF THE PIZZA
that moment when this piece was composed for your school
I only have a week to learn this before a performance, as a clarinet, I'm terrified 😭 why so many runs?? On the bright side, it's a good challenge 😢
why all song by robert sheldon sound same ? this song have a same part in rhapsodic celebration .
Lots of composers pieces sound the same because that’s their style. Like how Rossano Galante pieces sound identical and how Robert W Smith pieces are similar sounding to each other as well
@@gavyntapp7689 👌🏻✨
@@gavyntapp7689 Don't forget about Richard Saucedo as well. It's the woodwind flourishes and powerful brass that make these composers similar, but different at the same time.
Trying to master the timpani solo, wish me luck!
I play french horn im pretty good at it
Jayquan Fulson LUCKY
We should play this for graduation
I agree
WV All state band 💪
I’m convinced Robert Sheldon hates Tenors in the song specifically lol
We have LITERALLY nothing
3:54 timpani hit an E instead of an Eb

My middle school is one of the top 3 bands in California and we played this song in Symphonic Band in my seventh grade year. Yet this is supposed to be a 9th grade/10th grade song!
Gavyn Tapp *no reply*
@Gavyn Tapp Lmao sorry for replying late. I play percussion (Crash Cymbal and Tambourine) and go to IVC
You guys should try and tackle Satiric Dances. Level 5. 7 or 8 minutes long.
My band won the Texas Sate Championship 2 years in a row and we played top level High School music, it’s fun but sometimes it feels super stressful considering we’re only in middle school
I am learning this right now in a grade 10/11/12 split class.
Endless 16th runs, high notes… yeah pretty easy, let’s call it grade 4
For those who don’t know even at abrsm grade 8 you rarely see stuff this hard lol (woodwinds)
Band grades are different to ABRSM grades - grade 4 band music is around grade 6-8 ABRSM (depending on which stand you are on), grade 5 band music is professional level music :)
@@mushroom9913 this is professional level music :p
@@Jwellsuhhuh this song and arabesque by sam hazo are the only songs that actually sounds like a level 4-5
What is this?....
Anyone here in 2024?
Hahahahhahahahahahhah
Nice chart but such a boring tuba part.
I feel like this song should’ve ended at the sax solo at 4:34
