When I was in law school in 1993 at the age of 40 in a seminar of eight people, I answered a question, and then instructor said, I don’t think you understand the question. And one of the men at the table answered, and the teacher said exactly, and thank heaven for that man because he pointed at me and said, she just said the exat same thing!

I had a boss just like this guy in the late 90s. I was in my early/mid 20s & was his exec secretary. Once he walked briskly by my office to a meeting & whistled at me & said, "Make me a coffee & bring it to me in the meeting."
I did the thing & I realized he was trying to flex in front of the other execs. Later that day i walked into his office leaving his door open & said, "I'm not a dog & you will not whistle at me like that. If you want me to make you a coffee you will ask nicely & if i have time I might do it for you. However, I'm an exec secretary & was hired to do XYZ, not make your coffee. If you do anything like what you did earlier again I will quit."
Boss dude was completely gobsmacked. The look on his face was priceless was well worth speaking up. It's been over 30yrs & i still remember it.
**Edited to add - I find it telling so many folks have no problem with a boss/supervisor/authority figure dehumanizing a subordinate. Equally telling is not believing a person would stand up to such treatment. “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-for ever.”

When my mum got sick, i quit my job to help care for her and the house chores. Chores including stuff she used to do for my family. I found myself having utmost respect for housewives. Never assume working in the office is longer than housework.

He’s raising his voice and trying so hard to state his opinions or plans as immovable facts. She replies back so calmly and rationally and is unaffected by his anger; it so beautifully takes the wind out if his sails.
It really does. I was in an abusive marriage and he would always yell and scream, call me outside my name and he loved to tower over me. One day somethingnin me just snapped and I stopped defending myself and yelling and screaming back and just stayed calm. The calmer I stayed the more aggressive and violent he got. It infuriated him that he knew what buttons to push and the buttons stopped working. Happily divorced

Yes, it showed that TV writers keep manufacturing moments of feminist victory, even though anyone with an ounce of common sense could have told her how dumb her statement was.
I walked out, for four days, when my husband was on a long weekend holiday (vacation to americans, paid for too). I didn't prepare anything in advance, like making sure there were supplies in the freezer, or that all the laundry was done. Just picked up my bags and on the thursday evening. What I left my husband was a detailed list of what he would need to do for the next four days. Times to wake up, times to make up lunch boxes, what chores needed doing (especially getting the kids school uniforms and sports gear ready for monday morning).
He made it to Friday, before he phoned me demanding where the spare bedding was (airing cupboard obviously). Then the disasters started, he didn't know how to plait my daughters hair, couldn't find my sons football boots (soccer). A smashed glass bowl, an ice cream dropped on the carpet.
For every question or text, my reply was, "it's easy looking after kids, you said it was, shouldn't you be sitting on the sofa wathing day time tv eating chocolate."
Yes, he never demeaned a housewife ever again, but his 1950's mindset was starting to affect my son, and I was fed up ofvtge arguements, andcwe divorced.

I suspect you had an unhealthy marriage to begin with and you're at least half the problem as to why your marriage failed.
That has been my life until recently. I was a housewife for three decades. Then I threw his ass out six years ago, went to school and became a truck driver. I now make more money than he does. He is angry I don't need him and does his best to turn the kids against me. In the end this war he is waging will be won by me living well. The kids can always make their apologies. He can stay in the shit hole he has found himself in. I am tired of being disrespectful and made to work 18 to 20 hour days for no pay like some slave. Now I work 10 hours, do much less and get paid more than twice what he gets.

I shared an office with a marine Lt. Colonel and Navy Captain. I was their Yeoman and I would see them in the coffee room once in a while and neither one ever ordered me to get them coffee. They were the nicest men I have ever worked for, total respect for both of them.

If a woman raises her voice or shows emotion during a debate, she gets labeled "hysterical/exciteable/too emotional" much like people of colour get smacked with the "angry black man/angry black woman/fiery Latinx" label if they dare to respond with anything more than perfect calm. Hell, even poor and/or blue collar rural white people aren't immune from being branded with "angry redneck hillbilly" in these situations.
It's possibly because they're the ones still mostly in charge of society, but it seems only white affluent men in suits and ties are allowed to show any emotion whatsoever without worrying about their entire argument being invalidated because of it.

My husband works construction in Alaskas winter none the less. He pulled a 9 hour day yesterday, I, a stay at home mom of 2 rearranged three bedrooms. Moved our bedroom from upstairs to downstairs (king bed/bed frame moved them by myself downstairs) then I moved my sons room into our room and transformed his old room into a play room made my husbands and mine room into a bed/office. He got home somehow knowing I did something to the house because his ass walked through the front door and just started looking and he looked at me and said is there anything I can do for YOU? Like what? You just worked 9 hours outside in the cold and you want to do something for me? Marriage is a partnership where both people do the work. Sure I make dinner but on the days I am so tired or not feeling well or I have no energy to do anything my husbands steps up and helps.

And all of this is still expected if she works outside the home and makes more money than him.
We are lucky to have good marriages with wonderful men.

Underrated comment. I'm single and I don't have a wife. I do cooking and cleaning myself when needed. When I get home from work, tired, I don't need meal or anything like that - I go straight to bed and I'm happy that I don't have to put up with some nagging like "do this" or "do that". Ready warm meals are nice, but listening to wife's nagging every day, when you want peace and quiet is a price too high.

@hugolindum7728 They said I was one of their better cashiers. Then quarantine happened, and when they were rehiring after the fact, they said they weren't gonna bring me back because they were reducing their hours of operation and didn't need as many people. They suggested I work at one of their other establishments, which I only did to maintain insurance, but after a few months, they took me off of it cause of the reduced hours. My friend found me a better job after that and I'm much happier.

My maternal grandmother was supposed to be a housewife, in theory. But her husband was bipolar at a time when treatment for it was very limited. She had to take care of herself, 4 kids, and the household, but she couldn’t be sure of my granddad’s income. He might have a manic episode and spend it all on some crazy hiking trip. So she got a job once her kids were in school, even though she had only graduated high school.
We didn’t realize the extent of her struggles until after she passed a couple of years ago and my mom has been settling the estate.
That is really awesome though, that your grandmother believe so strongly in family and taking care of her husband and her children. I wish more people were committed to each other like that.

I appreciate your position but I think it still needs to be acknowledged when someone does what they need to do to make it work. My mom was working two and three jobs for a lot of my childhood after my dad walked out. She deserves praise for that, this person’s grandma deserves praise for her efforts, and everyone else who does what they need to do also deserves praise. It’s HARD and it would be so much easier to give up but they didn’t do that, they kept going. I’m proud of my mom and everyone else who keeps going.
@@TheiaofMeridor Of course! I think I was responding mostly to marliokono6292's comment of commitment. I didn't mean to sound like a downer or dismissive of their effort. I think I was coming from a pragmatic perspective, in that those in that position probably did not think themselves a hero, but they certainly had achievements of which to be proud.
Thankfully not all men are like this. My dad worked outside the home, and my mom stayed home with all the kids and did all the "mom" stuff. But, he treated her very well, never bossed her around, and he expected us children to respect and listen to her. They loved each other and it was evident. I grew up thinking that was the normal way that married couples interacted, until I got alittle older and saw my friend's families. We didn't have alot of money, but we were blessed!
This is how our life was. My daughter informed me that other couples were not like us at all. She would go over and visit her friends and sometimes spend the night. Kids see everything, u can't fool them. ❤❤❤

Lately my partner has been, 'ding ding' his Ash tray. Holding his glass up to me and doesn't even bother to go down stairs to answer thr door ( we live in a flat/apartment) and even refuses to answer the phone because he works all days and I don't. Refuses to help me in any way, expects me to find clothes and doesn't hug me, thank me or bother getting off his phone and he finds it funny. Its only in the last few yrs he's been doing this and I'm trying to find ways to stand up to him. If I don't ill let EVERYONE walk over me. Sadly it's damaged my confidence and I know kicking him out is the best choice but even that get complicated when you don't have the guts to do it...And when I have told him too, he just laughs...what am I doing wrong?
Would you be fine if, god forbid, your daughter ever goes through this? And if she says that she's trying to find ways to stand up for herself and have the guts for it, would you not be furious? You need to let him know how he makes you feel the second he treats you like a servant. I was denied a raise after being repeatedly congratulated for excellent work with the excuse that I didn't smile enough. That was in 2017. No doubt the same thing would happen today.

I was always so grateful that I don’t live on a rock, looking for food that doesn’t exist there, waiting for somebody to drop some thing so that I can survive. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I would smile more, I’m a first born, and I certainly have too much on my shoulders.
I do hope you find something to smile about. Take care of yourself. Perhaps having more friends who are willing to listen to your heartaches, would help you lighten your burden? In longevity studies, these people live the longest, those who have community that they can rely on.
When you actually look at many of the grievances between men and women, such as being a stay at home mom and a working husband, it’s not necessarily a gender issue, but a power issue. When you look at stay at home husbands who are discontent with the way their wives treat them, it is eerily similar to the reverse.
Sexism is systematic and ironically not entirely bound to gender. Aka traditionally feminine work and traits in ppl get shamed and it doesn't matter what gender they are.
That said: I can't say I observe the dynamic as being the same. I see more often how stay-at-home dads get resentful and struggle with depression due to their low self-worth and harassment by their own peers over working as full-time parent or homemaker. I also see his in male full-time stay-at home men who are not homemaker, though, but still dump all of that on their working female partner.
Which is not to say that there aren't lovely full-time dads suffering from sexism via their female working partners. They absolutely are real. Just to my current observation that's not such a common dynamic within the group of these couples.

I roll my eyes when men accuse women of being emotional in an argument--many times when they're the only one yelling. And when you say something like "why don't we revisit this conversation after you've pulled yourself together" he loses his f-ing mind. I suspect the feeling is kind of similar to when a man tells a woman to "calm down." The difference is that the men who expect women to actually do what they're told are exasperated when women don't. This kind of man can't handle having the same treatment turned back on them. This is probably why I'm an ex-wife, but that divorce was the best thing that ever happened to me. A lot of men these days say that women are having too much sex and that they're having to compete against taller and/or richer guys, or bad guys. These men will continue to fail to find a partner who cares about them as long as they are so insecure in themselves that they're incapable of giving what they want/expect to receive. Sure, women like sex as much as men but our sex life is no longer tied to our dependence on support from men. Women are looking for a partner that adds value to her life and doesn't disrupt her peace. Women have never liked being unpaid servants and f toys. Marriage didn't even work quite like that back in the day these tradguys want to fantasize about. Even in the 50's most men wouldn't even dream about asking someone to marry them if they didn't have a means to support them, and they didn't want a woman who was too short-sighted than to look for someone who would and could support their family. Now these men want the subjugation women used to accept for the sake of having support AND at the same time want women who don't care whether these guys bring anything to the family table. I really don't understand the hostility these days, but I have noticed that the more independent and successful women are, the more invested *some * men are in this delusional fantasy that says women like being disenfranchised, demeaned, devalued, and dismissed. I've noticed that young men, Millennials and GenZ, are much more likely to give women the care and credit they want for themselves. So even with this social temper tantrum we've been seeing, I still have hope for the future.

At 60, I was there i the 1960s with a single mother. In the 1970s women gained the right to have their own credit cards. The change is still occurring. It was only in the 1990s that every state recognized that a husband didn't have the right to beat his wife. The overt discrimination has mostly gone underground, but make no mistake, it hasn't disappeared. In the last few years, retailers and male waitstaff have begun calling me "miss" again. It's openly offensive, wrapped in imaginary manners. We are moving backward.

What made you think it's OK to tell ppl what to feel or how to emote for you? Why would you ask for someone to put on a mask. If they felt like smiling they would be without you saying it.
If you want to cheer up a person, you're putting in the damn work to actually cheer them up. If it's crying are you also saying "cry a litte?". I hope not! Emotions are supposed to be expressed genuinely and not out of social pressure.
Particularly as a neurodiverse person I cannot tell you how damn draining such insensitive requests are. Emotions are either effortless and there or they are not. Please be mindful of that. It's not the job of the ppl around you to perform emotionally so you can feel like you're being helpful. Never understood telling someone to smile. I see people here who think it means they want you to be happy. Well, no, if they wanted you to be happy they'd delve into why you aren't, or IF you aren't, rather than assume you aren't and order you to smile anyway. It's a very selfish thing to say. They don't want to see you unhappy but it's too much work to make you happy so it's faster to just... order you to be happy.

@@yayfly7349 Again different circumstances, if the person does the bare minimum then yes either would be easier. Cleaning your house seems easy because you are literally thinking of the bare minimum, for example tidying up yeah if you just did that then yes no where near the same level of effort.
However cleaning every work surface, toilet, deep cleaning the oven etc it quickly racks up.
But this can be done at a job as well, if for example you work in a warehouse, some days you'll be busy lifting heavy equipment all day long but others your simply doing stocktake which requires very little effort to accomplish. Don't be an arse and just say "cleaning is easy" as it basically means either you've never done it or you do bare minimum of cleaning.

Nobody values house work. Yes, it has benefits let’s not deny it. But you are expected to be the servant, which be the house wife is not. In the same way that the bread winner is not a ATM. There is a balance, respect and support that goes both ways. After cleaning the house, taking kids to school, picking them up, several laundries, groceries, cooking and cleaning. Expect you to clean the dishes or put the kids in bed is the absolute minimum.

My husband knew all about it...I went to work in an office every day. He was an artist, worked at home, oversaw my young son's school days, did the laundry, made dinner for all of us, and had a drink ready for me as I came in the door! I did the dishes sometimes, did the grocery shopping, and cooked a meal on weekends.
No actor or access demolishes anything except for the role they’re in. She did fine but the situation was fabricated. As was her response, delivery, and the reactions of others around her.

Why do you assume his day was longer than hers? - this hit me to the core. When I had survived breast cancer my ex husband cheated and left me and our 2 sons. He blamed me for the marriage falling apart. 12 years later I am cancer free and free of him. My sons recently started an ecommerce company and Ive been working as a freelancer. Somehow life became easier without him. After I got better, I supported my kids financially AND did housework and somehow I never felt like I had a 'long day'. I have raised my sons to be strong and independent and I'm glad they don't have my ex as a role model. Men think just because they go to work, they have it worse than women. Guess what, I've been on both sides of the coin(going to work and being a housewife and mum). Men have it easier. Only a few of them have it harder and much respect to them.
